Historic: American Trump and Korean Kim Jong Un to meet on June 12 in Singapore

This highly anticipated summit on the heels of prisoners release could be truly historic even if it is true that high level meetings/prisoners releases have taken place before and recent demand by NK leader could turn out to be problematic:

Obama 'grateful' for release of Bae and Miller by North Korea
    08 Nov 2014
US President Barack Obama has welcomed the release of two American men detained in North Korea.
Matthew Todd Miller, 24, and Kenneth Bae, 46, had been sentenced to hard labour by the secretive state.
The president said he was "grateful" for the outcome and praised the work of the Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, in securing their release.

Trump Will Announce Iran Deal Decision At 2 PM Tuesday

TRUMP PULLS OUT OF IRAN DEAL

Hopefully this will be a great win for peace through dialog rather than through MOABs as it is being tried in Afghan war by Trump lately. Also would be interesting to see how media covers this in coming days:

Trump announces June 12 summit in Singapore with North Korean leader

by David Nakamura and John Wagner May 10 at 1:19 PM

President Trump announced Thursday that his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will occur June 12 in Singapore, a high-stakes step in his bid to curb the rogue nation’s nuclear weapons program.
Trump made the announcement via Twitter just hours after welcoming home three Americans held captive for more than a year in North Korea.
The highly anticipated meeting between Kim Jong Un and myself will take place in Singapore on June 12th. We will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace!
    — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 10, 2018
    https://www.washingtonpost.com/polit...252_story.html

On a sidenote, this should also put a dent in critics notion that Trump does not surround himself with best people /is not as good deal maker as Obama. Trump has managed to repeat the accomplishments of Obama when he secured release of American prisoners, brought South and North to the table and remove propaganda loudspeakers on both sides of Korean DMZ. And this is just the start.

North Korea promised George W. Bush and Bill Clinton that they would end their nuclear program if the US gave the country more aid. Agreements were signed. Clinton was also given two political prisoners from North Korea as a "good faith gesture". We have seen this before- and in the end, nothing changed.

They are excited about Trump recognizing them and agreeing to meet in person, but they will not be willing to give up their nuclear program. The fact that Trump would bow down and meet with Kim Jong Un is proof of the value of the program- they gained more respect.

The US has been less than reliable too. They are walking away from (violating) a nuclear treaty with Iran while at the same time expecting North Korea to agree to one.

    TRUMP GOES BIG

Trump’s high-risk doctrine? Swing for the bleacher seats

By CATHERINE LUCEY, JONATHAN LEMIRE and KEN THOMAS
    Today

WASHINGTON (AP) — The way President Donald Trump sees it, why go for a solid single when you can swing for a home run?
Trump’s upcoming summit with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un is only the latest example of the president’s go-big strategy. From tax reform to international trade to foreign policy, Trump has pursued a high-risk, high-reward approach that advisers say can help produce results on longstanding problems — and that critics warn could trigger dangerous repercussions all the way from a trade war to global conflict.
Drawn to big moments and bigger headlines, Trump views the North Korea summit as a legacy-maker for him, believing that the combustible combination of his bombast and charm already has led to warmer relations between North and South. As he welcomed home three Americans who had been detained in North Korea, Trump early Thursday used a televised, middle-of-the-night ceremony to play up both his statecraft and stagecraft.
“I think you probably broke the all-time, in history, television rating for three o’clock in the morning,” Trump told reporters on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews.

U.S. officials offer economic aid, security assurances if North Korea eliminates nuclear program

    By David S. Cloud
    May 13, 2

The U.S. is prepared to quickly lift sanctions on North Korea and promise its leader, Kim Jong Un, that it would not seek to oust him from power, senior officials said Sunday, sketching out the terms of a possible deal if Kim agrees to give up his nuclear weapons.

"We will have to provide security assurances" to Kim as part of a nuclear deal, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on "Fox News Sunday." "Our hope is that Kim wants a strategic change, and President Trump is prepared to help."

A day after President Trump declared that the historic summit planned between the US and North Korea had been cancelled, Trump appeared to pull off another pivot on Friday when he kept hopes of a meeting alive, saying that the Singapore meeting may still happen as scheduled on June 12, just hours after North Korea said they are very eager to get back to the negotiating table, and that the only reason for Pyongyang's harsh language was because it was responding to similar language by the US.

"We'll see what happens," Trump told reporters at the White House on his way to Annapolis adding that "it could even be the 12th. We're talking to them now. They very much want to do it. We'd like to do it. We'll see what happens" and then explained his negotiating strategy: "everybody plays games."
"We're going to see what happens, we're talking to them now."

Trump credited the North's "very nice statement" for prompting the US to reconsider its cancellation.

Because Trump isn't deep state. Kim knows this. It's really rather obvious.

I mean, you could just look at Zippy and see what he thinks to see what the deep state thinks. That would be one data point.

But we have thousands and thousands of data points besides zippy.. all the deep state neocons, all the deep state globalists, all the deep state trolls, they all hate Trump. It's not a coincidence. It's not a reverse-psychology conspiracy to support Trump.

Uh, of course he knows that, that is why he (and his father) have acted the way they have over the last 60 years.

    What has changed?

Trump is President and so we are no longer controlled by the deep state. He communicated with China early on in his term and got them on board and explained how it was going to go down, and that they (China) would be responsible for KJU and NK.

China went to NK and told him what's up. Not complicated.

But hey, keep fighting for team deep state by all means..

North Korea's president Kim Jong Un held a surprise two-hour second summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in at the truce village of Panmunjom on Saturday afternoon to pave way for a summit between North Korea and the United States.
The South Korean presidential office said the two leaders met at the DPRK side of the border village of Panmunjom from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm local time on Saturday, where they "candidly discussed the potential Trump-Kim summit", and exchanged their opinions on implementing the April 27 Panmunjom Declaration.

Moon will release the result of the summit at 10:00 a.m. local time on Sunday, South Korea's Blue House said, without elaborating further.
The two leaders previously met on the South Korean side of Panmunjom on April 27, reaching a historic agreement on the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the change of the current armistice agreement into a peace treaty.

Their second summit came after U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that the United States will possibly reinstate the meeting with Kim. Late on Friday Trump said that "we are having very productive talks with North Korea about reinstating the Summit which, if it does happen, will likely remain in Singapore on the same date, June 12th., and, if necessary, will be extended beyond that date."

Donald Trump Claims News Source “Doesn’t Exist”, Surprising Witnesses

According to President Donald Trump, Matt Pottinger doesn’t exist. Which might come as news to Matt Pottinger.

In a morning tweet that was quickly debunked by reporters – and even a former colleague of Pottinger – Trump wrote today, “The Failing @nytimes quotes ‘a senior White House official,’ who doesn’t exist, as saying ‘even if the meeting were reinstated, holding it on June 12 would be impossible, given the lack of time and the amount of planning needed.’ WRONG AGAIN! Use real people, not phony sources.”

Trump was referring to a Page 1 story in today’s New York Times about the possibility of a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. Wrote the Times: “Twenty-four hours after announcing that he was calling off the meeting in a letter to Mr. Kim, the North’s leader, Mr. Trump told reporters that he and Mr. Kim might yet meet in Singapore on June 12.”

The Times story went on to say, as Trump correctly noted later, that “a senior White House official” told reporters on Thursday that a June 12 meeting would be “impossible.”

After Trump tweeted this morning that the White House official “doesn’t exist,” reporters who either attended or knew of Thursday’s formal, on-background briefing by National Security Council member Pottinger informed Trump of his existence. Journalist Yashar Ali even posted a recording of Pottinger’s press briefing.

On the path to the June 12 summit with North Korea, journalists claimed President Donald Trump would not be willing to walk away from the negotiating table because he was too desperate for a win.
The Washington Post’s David Nakamura wrote that “critics fear that a president determined to declare victory where his predecessors failed will allow his desire for a legacy-making deal to override the substance of the negotiations.” On the same day, the Washington Post’s Paul Waldman mocked Trump’s desire for a win, which he said was turning Trump into a fool who was getting played.

Then President Trump did what media outlets said he’d never do. He walked away from the negotiating table due to North Korea’s behavior. The media outlets didn’t acknowledge their previous analytical missteps so much as come up with new lines of attack on Trump.
Mark Landler and David Sanger of The New York Times wrote an article arguing there were deep divisions between Trump and his advisors. To support the claim, the Times argued that Trump said a June 12 summit was still possible, while his top aides said it was “impossible”:
As with so many issues involving this president, the views of his aides often have little effect on what he actually says. On Thursday, for example, a senior White House official told reporters that even if the meeting were reinstated, holding it on June 12 would be impossible, given the lack of time and the amount of planning needed.
On Friday, Mr. Trump said, ‘It could even be the 12th.’
President Trump responded by calling it fake news, tweeting:

Trump was incorrect when he said that The New York Times “quotes” the official. They actually characterized his remarks. But they definitely claimed a senior White House official said June 12 was impossible.
Media types rushed to The New York Times’ defense, claiming they heard a White House official say the “impossible” line in a background briefing they were privy to. Someone leaked audio of a background briefing that they said supported The New York Times’ “impossible” characterization.
Yashar Ali, who writes for New York magazine and HuffPo, then outed the name of someone who briefed reporters on background and provided audio that he erroneously claimed supported The New York Times’ characterization:
    4. I’ve obtained audio of the WH press briefing. You can hear Raj Shah, Deputy Press Secretary, introduce Pottinger (along with the terms – which are standard) and then Pottinger makes the statement that POTUS says was never made. Lots of reporters in briefing room and on phone. pic.twitter.com/2gEYkRSyTv
    — Yashar Ali (@yashar) May 26, 2018
    The audio says:
REPORTER: Can you clarify that…the President obviously announced in the letter and at the top of the bill signing that the summit is called off. But then, later, he said it’s possible the existing summit could take place, or a summit at a later date. Is he saying that it’s possible that June 12th could still happen?
    WHITE HOUSE OFFICIAL: That’s…
REPORTER: Or has that ship sailed, right?
WHITE HOUSE OFFICIAL: I think that the main point, I suppose, is that the ball is in North Korea’s court right now. And there’s really not a lot of time. We’ve lost quite a bit of time that we would need in order to, I mean, there’s been an enormous amount of preparation that’s gone on over the past few months at the White House, at State, and with other agencies and so forth. But there’s a certain amount of actual dialogue that needs to take place at the working level with your counterparts to ensure that the agenda is clear in the minds of those two leaders when they sit down to actually meet and talk and negotiate, and hopefully make a deal. And June 12 is in 10 minutes, and it’s going to be, you know. But the President has said that he has — someday, that he looks forward to meeting with Kim.
You will note that at no time does the White House official say a June 12 meeting is “impossible,” and at no point does he agree that the “ship sailed” or that time has run out. He definitely says it would be difficult to prepare for the summit given the lack of time to do so. His main point, as he says, is that the ball is in North Korea’s court and they need to act quickly.

    As Eric Blair tweeted:
It's not a question of semantics. Take it from someone with an M.A. in English: "very or exceedingly difficult" /= "impossible". People climb Mt. Everest, don't you know? No one says it's "impossible".
    — Eric Blair (@MinistryOfSooth) May 27, 2018

Clearly The New York Times peddled fake news. There may have been a real White House briefing with real White House officials, but The New York Times couldn’t be trusted to accurately summarize what the White House official said. And it wasn’t on a minor point.
Recall that the whole point of their characterization was to say this official was at odds with Trump and that Trump wasn’t listening to his advisors. The fact that Trump and his advisors were not disagreeing with each other undermines the entire point of The New York Times story.
But rather than admit that The New York Times was incorrect, and their reporters aren’t good at listening to Trump advisors or accurately conveying their remarks, the media claimed that Trump was the one lying, since, well, White House advisors who give briefings exist. See, Trump said no source existed who said the June 12 date was impossible — but a source exists who did not say that. Ergo: Trump lied.
I’m sure you see the logical failures here, even if President Trump could have or should have said that The New York Times attributed fake news to a real source.

The media, having been outed with benefit of audio tape at being failures at accurately conveying news, quickly moved the goalpost to argue that White House officials exist, as if that was in question. There are countless examples, but The New York Times’ Maggie Haberman is a perfect one:

No source exists who said what the Times claimed he said, so I imagine the background briefer probably feels a lot of anger at The New York Times for being utterly incompetent at its job. He probably is angry that The New York Times claimed he said something he didn’t say. Twitter editorialized as well:

Again, if you for some reason thought that Trump was saying White House officials who give background briefings don’t exist, then this would be a great point. If you expect The New York Times not to invent things that weren’t said and attribute them to these sources, then this is a not good point.
Trump is notoriously imprecise. His sentences — tweeted or spoken — are word salads that can be difficult to diagram. His word choices, run-on sentences, and inconsistent capitalization can be frustrating. It is reasonable to critique the president for his communication style, including that he should have condemned The New York Times for fake news attributed to a real source instead of fake news attributed to a fake source.
A media that desires to hold this president accountable simply must be accurate in its newswriting. It failed dramatically here, and failed to hold itself accountable when caught. This is why the media’s credibility is in tatters and why President Trump and others find it so easy to hold them up for ridicule.

The minting of the coin was used to mock President Trump after he announced that the summit was scuttled due to saber rattling from the North Korean government. After the second most powerful man in North Korea visited the White House Friday to personally deliver a letter from Kim Jong Un, Trump told reporters that the summit was back on.
The announcement has caused demand for the coin to skyrocket and the White House gift shop servers to crash. According to messages on the White House gift shop website:

Are CNN comments really true and KJU tried to beat POTUS in letter size?

NK's Supreme Leader KJU to Trump: My letter is bigger than your letter

Kim Jong Un sent a letter to Trump. It's huge

(CNN)President Donald Trump announced on Friday that his summit with Kim Jong Un is back on. This news came after senior North Korean official Kim Yong Chol hand-delivered a letter from Kim Jong Un to the President.

The White House released photos of its delivery, and this isn't just any ordinary letter.
    It's huge.

Some Twitter users were quick to point out that holding an envelope that size might make one's hands look small. The President's hand size is something he has previously defended.

Do you think Trump has any idea that Kim Jong Un is mocking him with this enormous letter? https://t.co/JGBrKcb6Ea

Are we sure the letter is really that big, or are Trump's hands just that small? https://t.co/Qh8Iexatk1

The Russian government has reportedly invited North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to visit Russia, a Kremlin spokesperson said on Monday.
Ivan Melnikov, a deputy speaker of the lower house of parliament, said that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov extended the invitation when he visited North Korea last week, the news service reported.

The invitation comes as the U.S. and North Korea prepare for their June 12 summit meeting to discuss nuclear disarmament.
President Trump last month suspended the summit after the U.S. and North Korea traded harsh words. He announced on Friday, however, that it was back on after meeting with a top North Korean official in the Oval Office.
North Korean state media reported over the weekend that Syrian President Bashar Assad announced plans to visit North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
“I am going to visit [North Korea] and meet HE Kim Jong Un,” Assad said as he received the credentials of Pyongyang’s ambassador late last week, Reuters reported, citing the KCNA news agency.
“The world welcomes the remarkable events in the Korean peninsula brought about recently by the outstanding political caliber and wise leadership of HE Kim Jong Un,” Assad added, according the report.

A reckless narrative was floated by a guest on MSNBC, that NK's leader fired rockets to bring President of US to the table. This is irresponsble at so many levels.. suggestig that firing rockets gets a dictator meeting with POTUS.
