Confusion erupts after a 'small, drone-type' object was reportedly shot down near the king's palace in Saudi Arabia

Confusion erupted on Saturday following reports of heavy gunfire near the Royal Palace in Saudi Arabia.

Media outlets quickly tamped down rumors of an attempted coup, and reported that the gunfire was from a toy plane or drone being shot down after getting to close to the palace.

The Wall Street Journal cited a source saying it was unclear whether the drone represented a legitimate threat or not.

The Saudi Press Agency said in a statement that a "small, drone-type remote-controlled recreational aircraft" was deployed "without being authorized to do so, which required security personnel at the security point to deal with them in accordance with their orders and instructions in this regard."

The agency added that an investigation into the apparent drone was underway.

King Salman was not inside the palace during the incident, one senior Saudi official told Reuters.

Earlier, there were several unconfirmed reports and videos posted to social media purporting to show heavy gunfire near the king's residence in Riyadh, the capital city.

A report by Fars News provides a different perspective, suggesting heavy gunfire at the palace of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in Riyadh
Reports said the king and his son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, have been evacuated to a bunker at an airbase in the city that is under the protection of the US troops.
While Saudi officials and media are quiet over the incident, there are contradicting reports over the incident. Witnesses and residents of the neighborhoods near the palace said a coup is underway, while other reports said a drone has been flying over the palace.
Saudi opposition members claimed that “a senior ground force officer has led a raid on the palace to kill the king and the crown prince”.
Videos also show that a growing number of armored vehicles have deployed around the palace. ‘Bin Salman’s special guard’ has taken charge of security in the capital. Riyadh’s sky has been closed to all civil and military flights as military helicopters from ‘Bin Salman’s special guard’ are flying over the palace.
There is yet no report on any possible casualties.

Saudi Arabia on Tuesday said it has delayed by three days the launch of an "entertainment city" near Riyadh, part of a series of multi-billion dollar projects as the oil-reliant kingdom seeks to diversify.
King Salman had been scheduled on Wednesday to launch construction of the 334-square kilometre project in Qiddiya, southwest of Riyadh, touted as the kingdom's answer to Disneyland.
"King Salman will inaugurate next Saturday the Qiddiya project, which is the new entertainment, sports and cultural destination in the kingdom," the state-run Saudi Press Agency said, without explaining the delay.

As wild speculation and questions abounded early this week over the whereabouts and status of Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS) with some going so far as to suggest he was assassinated during a palace shootout a month ago Saudi Arabia tried to clamp down on the rumors by releasing an awkward photo of the crown prince socializing with other heads of state, including President Sisi of Egypt, at a swimming pool while wearing a baseball cap pulled low over his eyes.

The prior ball cap photo in which half of bin Salman's face was obscured only served to fuel more rumors and conspiracies about his fate, prompting a lengthy article in the Spectator chronicling the theories and examining the photo, which was deemed "impossible to verify" and "a strange way to convince the world MBS is fighting fit."

Official photographic "proof" of the crown prince chairing a meeting released early Wednesday by his press spokesman via Twitter. And below the initial 'baseball cap photo' released earlier this week.

When the question of "Is the Saudi crown prince dead? Or sidelined?" made it onto Drudge Tuesday night and early Wednesday, it appears the Saudis felt compelled to act by releasing another photograph.
This time the Saudis released what is said to be an official photograph of MbS chairing a meeting of the Council for Economic and Development Affairs, tweeted by the prince's press spokesman.

MbS had reportedly not been seen or heard from in public since April 21, which was the same day gunfire was widely reported near the prince's residence, which the Saudis blamed on a toy drone breaching the security perimeter.
The incident, the aftermath of which was purported to be captured in a video shared widely on social media, led to theories of a successful assassination attempt.
The Saudi Crown Prince is probably in hiding in his own country after the April 21 coup attempt that failed.

The rumors of a coup attempt originated primarily in Iranian media after the editor-in-chief of Tehran-based daily Kayhan asserted in an editorial that "At least two bullets have hit bin Salman in April 21 clashes in Riyadh and it is even possible that he is dead." Similar stories were picked up by Iran's semi-official FARS news agency and other state connected Iran sources.
And subsequent public ceremonies and official visits by foreign dignitaries to the kingdom, some where MbS was a no-show and all of which failed to provide photographic proof of his presence further fueled theories. Iranian newspapers even claimed at one point to be in possession of leaked Saudi intelligence pointing to MbS' being shot on April 21st.

Matters came to a head on the evening of April 21, 2018, when heavy automatic weapons fire was heard over a fairly long timespan, coming from the compound of the Al-Khazami Palace in the neighborhood of Khuzama, in Riyadh. Government officials issued a report that the shooting was by Palace guards, firing at a civilian “toy” drone (unmanned aerial vehicle) which had strayed into forbidden airspace over the Palace. However, it was clear that some of the firing occurred within the Palace itself.
There were a significant number of casualties, and Riyadh had some discreet but clearly high-level funerals in the days which followed, although no announcements were subsequently made (even by early June 2018) of the deaths of any senior officials. It was understood that some visiting and very senior princes and officials were in the Palace with their armed bodyguards at the time of the incident.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) was reported to have been struck by at least two rounds. The Government had said that King Salman bin ‘Abd al-’Aziz al Sa’ud was not in the Palace at the time of the “drone incident”, and that he was at a family/military compound in the north-west of the Kingdom.
Other, private reports said that the King was in Riyadh at the time, and was quickly moved to a safe haven. The incident showed the extent of the anger felt by a significant number of family members of the House of Sa’ud toward Crown Prince Mohammed’s policies and methods.
Neither the King nor the Crown Prince appeared in open public situations from the time of the incident until early June 2018, although, on May 31, 2018, the Government released video footage of Crown Prince Mohammed meeting that day in Jeddah with Abd al-Rab Mansour al-Hadi, the Saudi-supported President of Yemen. What was significant about the video and still imagery released on May 31, 2018, was that one shot showed the Crown Prince standing and shaking hands with the President. King Salman met in Jeddah with the President the day before.

What is significant is that this was the first occasion in which Crown Prince Mohammed was shown standing since the April 21 shooting incident; all other imagery — and there was very little of that — only showed him seated. Clearly, however, if the Crown Prince was injured in the incident, then the wounds were not life-threatening, even though they were sufficient to ensure that he could not be presented to the public in a way which would allay rumors.
It has been confirmed that Crown Prince Mohammed was in a position to meet and conduct significant business with visiting Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed Ali on May 18, 2018, just 27 days after the shooting incident, although no imagery exists of their meetings during the official visit of Dr Abiy (May 18-20, 2018). This was a significant visit, not only due to some tensions between the Kingdom and Ethiopia, but because Crown Prince Mohammed was attempting to act as an intermediary between Ethiopia and Eritrea, healing several decades of tensions and, for Saudi Arabia, to ensure that the influence of Iran and Qatar in both countries was minimized.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited the Kingdom on April 28, 2018, a week after the shooting, and met with King Salman and Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir, but not with the Crown Prince.
Iraqi cleric and political leader Muqtada al-Sadr, the key victor of the May 12, 2018, Iraq parliamentary elections, had requested to visit the Kingdom, to meet with Crown Prince Mohammed, after his visit to Kuwait on May 30, 2018. The Shi’a cleric had visited the Kingdom in 2017, and had been warmly received, because of his independence from Iran, a position which only became more valuable following his recent election win. But the Saudi Government asked him to delay his visit to the Kingdom, a sign that there were still difficulties in the country.
But what was also significant was that Crown Prince Mohammed and King Salman had apparently spent much of the five weeks after the incident ensconced in the Rabigh Palace — a military compound with its own port — in Makkah (Mecca) Province, on the Red Sea. There was some speculation that the choice of this compound gave the option of rapid departure from the Kingdom if medical conditions demanded a move, or if the internal situation worsened.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, popularly known simply by his initials as MBS, will attend the World Cup opening ceremony in Moscow next Thursday on 14 June, representing his first foreign trip since emerging from his suspicious disappearance. His country’s regional state and non-state enemies had a field day spreading loads of fake news over the past month imagining that MBS was killed in a failed coup attempt in late April, with a fabricated “death” notice even emerging on social media last week purporting that the Kingdom’s de-facto ruler was already buried. To the disdain of his many regional critics and the utter embarrassment of everyone who participated in the fake news campaign about his death, MBS is clearly very much alive and dedicated to advancing the fast-moving and full-spectrum Russian-Saudi rapprochement as soon as he foreseeably can.
From Surviving A Failed Coup To Flying To The Kremlin
It might never be known exactly what happened to the Crown Prince over the last five or so weeks, but chances are that some of his enemies’ reports about his status were actually correct, in that he may have indeed been injured during a failed coup attempt and has spent the interim period recovering from his critical injuries. The author himself immediately suspected that something of the sort transpired and publicly wrote as much in his analysis at the time speculating whether “Saudi Arabia’s Drone Scare Might Have Really Been A Coup Attempt”, conjecturing that this was the most likely explanation for the unusual gunfire in the Saudi capital that went viral on social media. Remarking that both the US and Iran want MBS out of power for their own separate reasons, it’s now proven in hindsight that Tehran was much more eager to see this happen than Washington given that it was the Resistance-affiliated online community and related media outlets, and not the Mainstream Media, which contributed to the fake news campaign about his death.
