Over 200 Million Eggs Recalled Due to Salmonella Concern. This Is How to Check Your Cartons

Learn which brands were affected by the Rose Acre Farms egg recall and what to look for on the carton.

A farm based in Indiana is recalling more than 200,000,000 eggs due to fears of a Salmonella contamination, according to the U.S. FDA.

Based in Seymour, Indiana, Rose Acre Farms is recalling the eggs, which have reached consumers at restaurants and grocery stores at least in the following states:

    Colorado
    Florida
    New Jersey
    New York
    North Carolina
    Pennsylvania
    South Carolina
    Virginia
    West Virginia

Twenty-two illnesses have been reported so far.

Not so fast! It does NOT say “Rose Acre Farms” on the cartons. Rather, the following brand names have been affected:

    Great Value
    Food Lion
    Country Daybreak
    Crystal Farms
    Coburn Farms
    Sunshine Farms
    Glenview

    What Else to Check For
Check your carton for the number that starts with a “P-“. This is the plant number. Plant numbers P-1065 with the date range of 011 through date of 102 are the eggs in question according to the FDA.

CDC says symptoms about 12 to 72 hours after from salmonella include:

    Diarrhea
    Fever
    Abdominal cramping

The illness usually lasts up to a week and most people recover without treatment.
This is the largest salmonella outbreak since 2010 where a recall of more than 1 billion eggs from Iowa factory farms occurred. More than 1 million illnesses were reported.

If you’re not buying directly from a sustainable pasture-raised farmer or have your own chickens yet, it might be time to consider making the switch! Remember, pasture-raised and certified organic is always best.

    Announcement

Through an abundance of caution Rose Acre Farms of Seymour, Indiana is voluntarily recalling 206,749,248 eggs because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella Braenderup, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals infected with SalmonellaBraenderup can experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella Braenderup can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The eggs were distributed from the farm in Hyde County, North Carolina and reached consumers in the following states: Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia through retail stores and restaurants via direct delivery.

22 illnesses have been reported to date.

The voluntary recall was a result of some illnesses reported on the U.S. East Coast, which led to extensive interviews and eventually a thorough FDA inspection of the Hyde County farm, which produces 2.3 million eggs a day. The facility includes 3 million laying hens with a USDA inspector on-site daily.

Consumers who have purchased shells eggs are urged to immediately discontinue use of the recalled eggs and to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at (855) 215-5730 between the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Standard time.

Handle eggs properly to prevent salmonella
    Suzanne Driessen

Eggs: you may like them sunny side up or over easy, but it's safer to eat eggs that are cooked well. Today some unbroken, clean, fresh shell eggs may contain Salmonella bacteria that can cause foodborne illness. To be safe, eggs must be properly handled, refrigerated, and cooked.

    How does salmonella infect eggs?
Bacteria can be inside an uncracked, whole egg. Contamination of eggs may be due to bacteria within the hen's ovary or oviduct before the shell forms around the yolk and white. Salmonella doesn't make the hen sick. Eggs are washed and sanitized at the processing plant. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that 1 in every 20,000 eggs are contaminated with Salmonella. Persons infected with Salmonella may experience diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, headache, nausea, and vomiting.

Who is at risk of illness?
No one should eat foods containing raw eggs. This includes "health food" milk shakes made with raw eggs, Caesar salad, Hollandaise sauce, and any other foods like homemade mayonnaise, ice cream, or eggnog made from recipes in which the egg ingredients are not cooked.

How do you store shell eggs?
Store in the refrigerator set at 40 degrees F or below. Keep them in their carton and place them inside the refrigerator, not in the door. Don't wash eggs because you remove the protective mineral oil coating and increase the potential for bacteria on the shell to enter the egg. Use eggs within 4 to 5 weeks from the day they are placed in the refrigerator. The "sell-by" date will usually expire during that length of time, but the eggs are safe to use.

Don't wash eggs because you remove the protective mineral oil coating and increase the potential for bacteria on the shell to enter the egg.
How do you safely cook eggs?
Toast with ham, eggs, and pineapple
Hard-cooked eggs should be safe for everyone to eat. The American Egg Board recommends frying, scramble, or poaching eggs until both the yolk and the white are firm.

Fried eggs — cook 2 to 3 minutes on each side, 4 minutes in a covered pan
Scrambled eggs — cook until firm throughout
Poached eggs — 5 minutes over boiling water
Soft-cooked eggs — 7 minutes in the shell in boiling water
    Safe vs. unsafe recipes

Homemade ice cream and eggnog can be made safely from a cooked egg-milk mixture. Heat it gently to 160 ° F on a food thermometer
Dry meringue shells are safe. So are divinity candy and 7-minute frosting, made by combining hot sugar syrup with beaten egg whites.
Avoid icing recipes using uncooked eggs or egg whites.
Meringue-topped pies are safe if baked at 350° F for about 15 minutes.
Chiffon pies and fruit whips made with raw, beaten egg whites are risky. Instead, substitute pasteurized dried egg whites, whipped cream, or a whipped topping.

To make a recipe safe that specifies using eggs that aren't cooked, heat the eggs in a liquid from the recipe over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture reaches 160 ° F. Then combine it with the other ingredients and complete the recipe.

Doubt all 200 million were contaminated. They recalled whole batches from the same producer. And if you cook it properly there is little chance of sickness.
