Hasili, dam of 5 Grade 1 winners and 3 champions, dies at 27
Hasili, one of the most successful broodmares of the modern era, has died at Juddmonte Farms’s Banstead Manor Stud at Newmarket, England. The daughter of Kahyasi was 27.
Hasili, who had been pensioned since 2012, produced 10 foals, with 8 of those making it to the races. Her seven winners were all graded or group stakes winners, led by five Grade 1 winners and three champions – Banks Hill, Intercontinental, and Champs Elysee. She was honored as England’s Broodmare of the Year in 2006.
“Hasili has been an integral part of Juddmonte’s history,” Juddmonte’s stud director Simon Mockridge said in a press release. “Her record of producing five Group 1 winners is unsurpassed in the modern era and her powerful influences will continue to be felt through Juddmonte pedigrees and the General Stud Book for many years to come.”
Hasili, a homebred for Saudi Prince Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte, won 4 of 17 starts, all in France, highlighted by a score in the Prix des Sablonnets. She got her broodmare career off to a flying start with her first foal, Dansili, born in 1996. The son of Danehill was a Group 2 winner in France and Group 1-placed in both England and the United States, finishing third in the 2000 Breeders’ Cup Mile.
Banks Hill, also by Danehill, was a champion in both Europe and North America in 2001, winning the Group 1 Coronation Stakes at the renowned Royal Ascot meeting, finishing second in the French 1000 Guineas, and heading overseas to win the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf. The following year, she was a Group 1 winner in France, finished third in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot, and was second in her defense of the Filly and Mare Turf.
Intercontinental, a full sister to Banks Hill, finished third in the 2003 English 1000 Guineas. She would go on to bring a second Eclipse Award trophy home to the family on the strength of her win in the 2005 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf.
Hasili produced three other multiple Grade 1 winners in Champs Elysees (the 2009 Canadian Horse of the Year), Cacique, and Heat Haze. She also was the dam of Grade 3 winner Deluxe.
Hasili has five daughters in the Juddmonte broodmare band, including Banks Hill, dam of Group 1 winner Romantica and stakes winner Ideal World. Juddmonte says that Hasili appears in the pedigree of more than 25 percent of its mares.
According to Juddmonte statistics, Hasili’s four sons at stud have sired more than 230 black-type performers, led by Dansili, sire of a pair of Eclipse Award champions in Flintshire and Dank.
