'It's not a war. It's a massacre': scores killed in Syrian enclave

Almost 200 civilians have been killed in dozens of airstrikes and shelling by forces loyal to Syria’s Bashar al-Assad in eastern Ghouta over two days of “hysterical violence”, which has led to warnings of a humanitarian catastrophe that could eclipse past atrocities in the seven-year war.

The surge in the killing in the besieged region came amid reports of an impending regime incursion into the area outside Damascus, which is home to 400,000 civilians. More than 700 people have been killed in three months, according to local counts, not including the deaths in the last week.

Amnesty International said “flagrant war crimes” were being committed in eastern Ghouta on an “epic scale.”

Diana Semaan, the charity’s Syria researcher, said: “People have not only been suffering a cruel siege for the past six years, they are now trapped in a daily barrage of attacks that are deliberately killing and maiming them, and that constitute flagrant war crimes.”

Seven hospitals have also been bombed since Monday morning in eastern Ghouta, which was once the breadbasket of Damascus but has been under siege for years by the Assad government and subjected to devastating chemical attacks. Two hospitals suspended operations and one has been put out of service.

“We are standing before the massacre of the 21st century,” said a doctor in eastern Ghouta. “If the massacre of the 1990s was Srebrenica, and the massacres of the 1980s were Halabja and Sabra and Shatila, then eastern Ghouta is the massacre of this century right now.

He added: “A little while ago a child came to me who was blue in the face and barely breathing, his mouth filled with sand. I emptied it with my hands. I don’t think they had what we do in any of the medical textbooks. A wounded child breathing with lungs of sand. You get a child, a year old, that they saved from the rubble and is breathing sand, and you don’t know who he is.

“All these humanitarian and rights organisations, all that is nonsense. So is terrorism. What is a greater terrorism than killing civilians with all sorts of weapons? Is this a war? It’s not a war. It’s called a massacre.”

The Syrian civil defense, a search and rescue organisation, said 61 people were killed on Tuesday alone, while the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitor, said 194 people had died in the last 48 hours– a toll that encapsulated the unbridled violence of the war in Syria. After seven years and interventions by regional and global powers, the humanitarian crisis has heightened instead of abating, as forces loyal to Assad’s regime and his Russian and Iranian backers seek an outright military victory instead of a negotiated political settlement.

“It’s Raining Rockets”: Deadly New Syrian-Russian Assault Kills Hundreds in Eastern Ghouta

Two weeks ago, Mouaz Khaboutily, a Syrian photographer who works with an anti-government group, called me from the rebel-controlled Damascus suburb of eastern Ghouta. Khaboutily had sheltered in a bunker as Syrian and Russian forces launched an offensive to retake the enclave of nearly four hundred thousand people. During what he hoped was a pause in the fighting, he risked a trip to the street in order to find Internet access and see if the U.N. Security Council had brokered a ceasefire. “I’d be a liar if I said this is not dangerous,” the twenty-eight-year-old told me over WhatsApp. As he stood on the street, warplanes began flying overhead. After two minutes, we agreed that he should hang up and find shelter. The warplanes had dropped bombs four times while he was on the phone—one, he estimated, was just two hundred yards away.

In the last two weeks, one thousand and forty-two people, including about a hundred and fifty-six children, have been killed in eastern Ghouta, in what human-rights groups fear is a final, all-out offensive to retake one of the few remaining rebel-held enclaves in the country. Bombings by Syrian and Russian planes have been indiscriminate, killing civilians, levelling homes, and destroying medical facilities. Bashar al-Assad’s regime—with the full support of Vladimir Putin and the Russian military—have flouted calls for a complete ceasefire.

More than thirty medical facilities in eastern Ghouta and other parts of the country have been struck by Syrian and Russian air strikes since mid-February, and many of them are no longer functioning, according to Violations Documentation Center, a human-rights organization founded by opposition activists in Syria. “They’re using weapons that are guided, unlike barrel bombs,” Mona Zeineddine, a London-based spokeswoman for the group, told me. “If a town or village loses its hospital, and given how hard it is to commute between towns, it’s devastating to the people.”

A thirty-eight-year-old school teacher, who asked to be called Sarah, said that, in the initial days of the bombardments, she and ten members of her family, including five children, lived in one room in their house. At first, they prepared to live in the basement of their building, filling it with clothes, papers, shoes, and food. On February 24th, the U.N. Security Council passed a resolution that called for a thirty-day ceasefire. At 11 a.m. the next day, Sarah heard the sound of a plane. “It was obvious that ceasefire is a big lie,” she later wrote to me, in an e-mail. “The planes hit a village . . . . We knew they would return to hit other cities in Ghouta.”

When night fell, Sarah and her family decided to flee to a nearby basement that they hoped would be safer. To ensure the survival of some family members, they divided into three teams taking separate routes. When one missile fell, and then another, and another, they took shelter. “A missile hit the roof of the building where we were hiding, and the children cried more and more,” she wrote. “We decided to run: whatever happens, never stop . . . . We ran, missiles came again, a child fell down. I carried her and kept running.”
On Monday, Syrian officials allowed an aid convoy to enter eastern Ghouta for the first time since the offensive began. At a checkpoint along the way, government officials confiscated medical supplies, insulin, and surgical equipment from the trucks. After the convoy arrived, U.N. officials were given only a few hours to unload the forty-six trucks, before being ordered to leave. Nine of the trucks returned full. During and after the delivery, the bombing of opposition areas continued, according to Rehan, who accompanied the U.N. convoy in Douma. “The shelling in the cities was more intense than ever,” she said. By the end of the day, attacks by Syrian and Russian forces had killed nearly a hundred people.

"I have taken a decision: a significant part of the Russian troop contingent located in Syria is returning home to Russia," he added.

    Yep. Things change.

Like I said previously (I'd have to dig to find it) but certainly now in hindsight...
    I believe(d) it was more of a 'strategic' move (to invite/entice) the Pentagon/Trump into a non-confrontational 'exit',
i.e. 'All hail, ISIS defeated, Mission Accomplished. LEAVE (save face.)
    rather than
any 'tactical' decision by Putin/MoD. (i.e. war zones, ground battles, force logistics etc.)

Things change. Opportunities R now lost.

The 'new' build-up (imo) is now back to tactical: The coming summer confrontation on the Euphrates banks
to redeem the stolen oil fields.

    It's coming...
and probably explains why we R NOW hearing the 'rumors' of a possible all-out Coalition attack on Syria.

Speaking strictly from a US military strategy: Why Wait? (for 'them' to assemble/fortify.)

    ====

If you want me to extrapolate further I will

I believe the clumsy UK 'poisoning' FF was/is meant to justify (further) the 'planned' Syrian assault by the hegemons.
    also..
I believe General Votel's congressional testimony was a 'patriotic' chessmove AGAINST the planned attack.
(my hat is OFF to General Votel for his truth telling defiance and bravery.)

US building new base in oil rich area in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor province
    https://www.almasdarnews.com/article...vince-reports/

Local online news portal the Euphrates Post has published video evidence
showing what appear to be two US Coalition Blackhawk helicopters consolidating the US presence in an oil-rich area in Deir ez-Zor province.

According to the resource, a new US Coalition base is being built in the area east of the city of Mejadin, near al-Omar, Syria’s largest oil field.

Col (ret.) Alexander Zhilin, head of the Moscow-based Center for the Study of Applied Problems of National Security,
said that there was an obvious trend for the Pentagon to create new facilities in and around Syria’s largest oil and gas fields.

Russian Copter-Based Electronic Jammer Spotted in Syria for the 1st Time

A photo of what looked like the Russian Mi-8MTPR-1 helicopter equipped with the radio electronic warfare system Rychag-AV in Syria has emerged on Twitter.

The Rychag-AV is considered one of the world's most powerful jammers when it comes to disrupting the electronics of combat aircraft and cruise missiles.

The system is typically installed on Mi-8MTPR-1 choppers and can completely "blind" the enemy up to 400 kilometers (about 248 miles) away.

Leaked Images Allegedly Show US Military Tanks Arriving In Jordan

Could Syria’s southern border with Jordan be the next confrontation zone in the country’s multiple regional wars?
Sputnik news agency recently uncovered leaked images of U.S. military equipment arriving in Jordan’s Aqaba Industrial Port via the vehicle carrier ship “Liberty pride” for the upcoming participation in the annual war drill “Eager Lion.” During the unloading process, the images reveal the “M1A2 Abrams main battle tanks, the M113’s variation for medical evacuation and the M2A3 Bradley armored personnel carriers” were offloaded from the 199-meter (652 feet) military transport vessel, said Sputnik.

Sputnik indicates that Eager Lion war drill is an important military exercise between the U.S. Armed Forces and Jordanian Armed Forces, along with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain. Further, the war drill could flare up tensions on the Jordan–Syria border, and as we know, sometimes war drills go live.
“Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and other US allies will join the “Eager Lion” military exercises, which have been conducted every year since 2010. After the latest reports of a planned US strike on Syrian governmental forces these drills could possibly create tensions between Jordan and neighboring Syria.”
Here is what Eager Lion war drill looked like in 2016:
القوات الأردنية والأمريكية ينفذون إطلاق نار بالذخيرة الحية خلال إحدى فعاليات #الأسدالمتأهب في ميدان تدريب في الأردن pic.twitter.com/LTi74TsPdy
    — Eager Lion (@eagerlion2016) May 24, 2016
However, Muraselon news agency ignores the Eager Lion war drill and believes the United States coupled with the Jordanian Armed Forces could be preparing for the next regional war along the Jordan–Syria border.
“With its economy greatly badly affected by Syrian war, Amman is desperately seeking to re-open Nassib border crossing to reinvigorate its economy. Jordan had previously failed to convince the Syrian opposition to hand over this vital crossing to the Syrian government. The Syrian Army will definitely make it to the Jordanian borders sooner or later. It might as well use the same tactics of Eastern Ghouta by dividing the territories of rival armed opposition groups and compel them to make separate concessions. But, will the Syrian opposition attack the Syrian forces along the Damascus-Daraa highway?”
Jordan is a major player bordering southwestern Syria but has been silent as the Russian-backed Syrian regime expanded territorial gains from terrorist groups in the eastern Ghouta region. Now, Jordan seems like it is preparing for a conflict with Syria, as the United States Armed Forces have recently unloaded large amounts of tanks and personnel carriers. Syrian Army gives Jaysh Al-Islam final opportunity to respond to Douma offer
    https://www.almasdarnews.com/article...o-douma-offer/

the Syrian Army informed Jaysh Al-Islam that their decision to surrender Douma must come
directly after the last rebel group leaves Jobar and Zamalka.

If they fail to meet this timeline, the Syrian Army will begin their long-awaited offensive to capture Douma.

    Jaysh Al-Islam was supposed to give the Syrian Army and Russian military their answer today;
however, they did not respond, despite repeated attempts to by the Russian Reconciliation Center communicate with this Islamist group.

Russia ‘sole member’ to advance Ghouta ceasefire – Russian envoy
    https://www.almasdarnews.com/article...russian-envoy/

Russia “has been proactively taking measures to normalize the [humanitarian] situation” in Syria.
He went on to say that “perhaps, this is not to the liking of some,
but in fact we are the sole member to undertake concrete measures to implement Resolution 2401.”

“some members of the Security Council prefer to squander time on fiery speeches and letters containing some unfounded claims against our country,”
    which he said is done
“to conceal their own unwillingness to take constructive measures in the implementation of Resolution 2401, in line with the groups they sponsor.”

Nebenzya also called on the UN to provide “urgent assistance” for people fleeing Eastern Ghouta,
“to step up the UN presence in the humanitarian corridors”
and to deliver “immediate assistance in rebuilding the infrastructure in the liberated areas of Eastern Ghouta.”

In an apparent attempt to establish control over Syria’s oil deposits,
the United States has begun the construction of a major military installation in Deir Ez-Zor province,
according to a high-ranking representative of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Mehdi Kobani, the SDF’s press secretary in Deir Ez-Zor, told Sputnik Turkiye
that the new US military base is being built in the vicinity of al-Omar oilfield–the biggest oil deposit in Syria.

►There is currently construction machinery working in the vicinity of the base, and security is being provided by SDF forces.

►Earlier a local media outlet also posted video of US military helicopters operating in the area where this new facility is being built.

Close call: Russian, US forces nearly clash in eastern Deir Ezzor
    https://www.almasdarnews.com/article...rn-deir-ezzor/

The U.S. and Russian forces nearly clashed in the Euphrates River Valley this week, the U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis claimed on Tuesday.

According to Mattis, a Russian unit was moving close to the U.S. lines east of the Euphrates River,
forcing the latter to contact Moscow in order to avoid a confrontation.

“These were forces moving into more advanced positions, too close,” Mattis said, calling them “Russian elements.”

Mattis continued that the U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Joseph Dunford, and his Russian counterpart, Gen. Valery Gerasimov,
quickly defused the situation and avoided the potential confrontation.

“Those (Russian) elements fell back,” Mattis said, adding that “we have also drawn off slightly.”

The Russian Ministry of Defense also confirmed Mattis’ report.

ISIS reportedly captures large oil field from US-backed forces in east Deir Ezzor
    https://www.almasdarnews.com/article...st-deir-ezzor/

The so-called Islamic State (ISIS) launched a big offensive against the US-backed forces in rural Deir Ezzor this week,
targeting several areas east of the Euphrates River.

ISIS began their offensive by storming the key town of Al-Bahra; this would result in a series of intense clashes that lasted for several hours on Monday.

The terrorist group would ultimately take control of Al-Bahra before reinforcements from the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) arrived today
to help retake the town; it is still contested.

Meanwhile, at the large Al-Saykhan Oil Field, pro-opposition activists allege that the Islamic State
has taken control of the site following the withdrawal of the US-backed forces.

If true, this will be one of the biggest losses suffered by the US-backed forces since they launched their offensive in rural Deir Ezzor last year.
