Former Russian Spy In Critical Condition After Exposure To "Unknown Substance"

A former Russian spy and a female companion are in critical condition after being exposed to an "unidentified substance" in Salisbury, England.
Wiltshire Police and partners have declared a major incident after it is suspected that two people have been exposed to an unknown substance in Salisbury. Read the full update on our website: https://t.co/xCn9ByTMVf pic.twitter.com/m3f6wksJH1

Sergei Skripal, 66, and a 33-year-old woman were found unconscious on a bench at the Maltings shopping center on Sunday afternoon.

Eyewitness Freya Church told the BBC it looked like the two people had taken "something quite strong".
She said: "On the bench there was a couple, an older guy and a younger girl. She was sort of leant in on him, it looked like she had passed out maybe.
"He was doing some strange hand movements, looking up to the sky." -BBC
Col Skripal is a retired Russian military intelligence officer who was jailed by Russia in 2006 for spying for Britain. In 2010, he was one of four prisoners released by Moscow in exchange for 10 US spies - after which he flew to the UK. Russia said the UK's MI6 paid Skripal $100,000 to expose the identities of Russian intelligence agents working undercover in Europe, which he had been supplying from the 1990s.
Skripal and the female are both in intensive care at Salisbury District Hospital, while a hazmat team cleaned up the area where the couple were found.

Alexander Litvinenko: the man who solved his own murder

The Millennium hotel is an unusual spot for a murder. It overlooks Grosvenor Square, and is practically next door to the heavily guarded US embassy, where, it is rumoured, the CIA has its station on the fourth floor. A statue of Franklin D Roosevelt – wearing a large cape and holding a stick – dominates the north side of the square. In 2011 another statue would appear: that of the late US president Ronald Reagan. An inscription hails Reagan’s contribution to world history and his “determined intervention to end the cold war”. A friendly tribute from Mikhail Gorbachev reads: “With President Reagan, we travelled the world from confrontation to cooperation.”

The quotes would seem mordantly ironic in the light of events that took place just around the corner, and amid Vladimir Putin’s apparent attempt to turn the clock back to 1982, when the former KGB boss Yuri Andropov – the secret policeman’s secret policeman – was in charge of a doomed empire known as the Soviet Union. Next to the inscriptions is a sandy-coloured chunk of masonry. It is a piece of the Berlin Wall, retrieved from the east side. Reagan, the monument says, defeated communism. This was an enduring triumph for the west, democratic values, and for free societies everywhere.

Five hundred metres away is Grosvenor Street. It was here, in mid-October 2006, that two Russian assassins had tried to murder someone, unsuccessfully. The hitmen were Andrei Lugovoi and Dmitry Kovtun. Their target was Alexander Litvinenko, a former officer in Russia’s FSB spy agency. Litvinenko had fled Moscow in 2000. In exile in Britain he had become Putin’s most ebullient and needling critic. He was a writer and journalist. And – from 2003 onwards – a British agent, employed by MI6 as an expert on Russian organised crime.

Latterly, Litvinenko had been supplying Her Majesty’s spooks and their Spanish counterparts with hair-raising information about the Russian mafia in Spain. The mafia had extensive contacts with senior Russian politicians. The trail apparently led to the president’s office, and dated back to the 1990s when Putin, then aide to St Petersburg’s mayor, Anatoly Sobchak, worked closely with gangsters. In a week or so, Litvinenko was to testify before a Spanish prosecutor. Hence, it appeared, the Kremlin’s frantic efforts to kill him.

The men from Moscow were carrying what Kovtun confessed to a friend was “a very expensive poison”. About its properties he knew little. The poison was polonium-210, a rare radioactive isotope, tiny, invisible, undetectable. Ingested, it was fatal. The polonium had originated at a nuclear reactor in the Urals and a production line in the Russian town of Sarov. A secret FSB laboratory, the agency’s “research institute”, then converted it into a dinkily portable weapon.

Lugovoi and Kovtun, however, were rubbish assassins. The quality of Moscow’s hired killers had slipped since the glory days of the KGB. Their first attempt, in a Grosvenor Street boardroom, had not worked. They had lured Litvinenko to a business meeting, where – the radiation stain later showed – they had tipped polonium into his cup or glass. But Litvinenko did not touch his drink. As of 1 November 2006, he was stubbornly alive.

Actually I'm thinking it 'possibly' was. idk.
    Why do you think not?

The reason I posted the 'possibility' was that 'aerosoled' fetanyl already exists as a dark weapon in the intelligence agencies.

Russian spy: Nerve agent 'used to try to kill' Sergei Skripal

A nerve agent was used to try to murder a former Russian spy and his daughter, police have said.

Sergei and Yulia Skripal were found unconscious in Salisbury on Sunday afternoon and remain critically ill.

A police officer who was the first to attend the scene is now in a serious condition in hospital, Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said.

Nerve agents are highly toxic chemicals that stop the nervous system working and shut down bodily functions.

They normally enter the body through the mouth or nose, but can also be absorbed through the eyes or skin.

Mr Rowley, head of Counter Terrorism Policing, said government scientists had identified the agent used, but would not make that information public at this stage.

"This is being treated as a major incident involving attempted murder, by administration of a nerve agent," he said.

"Having established that a nerve agent is the cause of the symptoms... I can also confirm that we believe that the two people who became unwell were targeted specifically."

He said there was no evidence of a widespread health risk to the public.

Two other police officers who attended the scene were treated in hospital for minor symptoms, before they were given the all clear. It is understood their symptoms included itchy eyes and wheezing.

The announcement by the police that Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia are the victims of an attack in which a nerve agent was used makes the parallel with the poisoning of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006 even stronger.

Like the radioactive polonium used to kill Litvinenko, a nerve agent is not normally something criminal gangs or terrorist groups can make.

Instead, it is usually manufactured by specialist laboratories under the control of governments - and that inevitably means suspicion will now be very much focused on Russia.

Not only does it have a track record of using poisons to assassinate its enemies, there is also a motive in the case of Sergei Skripal.

As a military intelligence officer in Russia, he betrayed his country by providing information to MI6, reportedly revealing the identities of Russian agents in Europe. And Russian President Vladimir Putin has in the past indicated that traitors deserve to die.

Although the question remains, why would Mr Skripal be attacked now when he has been living in Britain for eight years and came here originally as part of a spy swap?

    haha... that's even better.
of course they used a 'nerve agent'.

police officer who attended the scene is also in critical condition.

Nerve agent was developed in Russia at the Yasenevo lab in Moscow: reports (of course it was)

Tory Ex-Army officer Bob Seely told The Sun:
“In my mind now, there is now no doubt this was a hit ordered by Putin, and by using something complex they’re effectively showing off."

Russia needs to 'show off' by spectacularly murdering a self confessed cold case spy,

From Moon of Alabama on the Skripal-Steele connection:

    The British Telegraph reports today:
A security consultant who has worked for the company that compiled the controversial dossier on Donald Trump was close to the Russian double agent poisoned last weekend … The consultant, who The Telegraph is declining to identify, lived close to Col Skripal and is understood to have known him for some time. … Col Skripal moved to Salisbury in 2010 in a spy swap and became close to a security consultant employed by Christopher Steele, who compiled the Trump dossier. The British security consultant, according to a LinkedIn social network account that was removed from the internet in the past few days, is also based in Salisbury. On the same LinkedIn account, the man listed consultancy work with Orbis Business Intelligence, according to reports.

Orbis is Christopher Steele's company and Sergei Skripal was an agent Steele himself had recruited or was running:
Steele had spent more than twenty years in M.I.6, most of it focussing on Russia. For three years, in the nineties, he spied in Moscow under diplomatic cover. Between 2006 and 2009, he ran the service’s Russia desk, at its headquarters, in London. He was fluent in Russian, and widely considered to be an expert on the country.

Steele was an MI6 undercover agent in Moscow around the time when Skripal was recruited and handed over Russian secrets to the MI6. He also ran the Russia desk so anything about Skripal will have passed through him. They certainly knew each other. Additionally one man who worked for Steele's private company, likely also a former British spy, lived in the same town as Skripal and had been friends with him since he had arrived there. That man or someone else attempted to cover up the connection by deleting his LinkedIn entry. …

    • Did Skripal help Steele to make up the "dossier" about Trump?
    • Were Skripal's old connections used to contact other people in Russia to ask about Trump dirt?
    • Did Skripal threaten to talk?

If there is a connection between the dossier and Skripal, which seems very likelythen there are a number of people and organizations with potential motives to kill him. Lots of shady folks and officials on both sides of the Atlantic were involved in creating and running the anti-Trump/anti-Russia campaign. … Removing Skripal while putting the blame on Russia looks like a convenient way to get rid of a witness. …
the connection between Steele and Skripal is way too deep to be irrelevant here. It certainly deserves more digging. …

it is likely that the British government, and its U.S. cousin, will come up with some "blame Russia" story for the gullible people …

Home Secretary Amber Rudd, hardly a Russophile, cautioned that MPs and the public shouldn't jump to conclusions; instead, they should wait until a clearer picture of the evidence emerges, adding that she is "confident" police and security services will identify those responsible, according to Bloomberg.
"When we have all the evidence of what took place we will, if it’s appropriate, attribute it to somebody. If that is the case we will have a plan in place," Rudd told BBC Radio 4’s Today show. "We are absolutely robust about crimes committed on these streets, in the U.K. There’s nothing soft about the U.K.’s response to any sort of state activity in this country."

21 reportedly treated in connection with attack on Russian spy

Twenty-one people have received some form of treatment in connection with the attempted assassination of a former Russian spy and his daughter with a nerve agent in England, though only three remain in a hospital, a police official told Britain's Sky News on Thursday.

The three are former Russian spy Sergei Skripal; his daughter, Yulia; and Detective Sgt. Nick Bailey, said Kier Pritchard, temporary chief constable of Wiltshire police.

Regarding the others, Pritchard told Sky News they've been "through the hospital treatment process, there have been blood tests and they're having treatment in terms of support and advice."

Police confirmed Wednesday that a nerve agent was used in the attack in the southern city of Salisbury on Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, who remain in critical but stable condition.

Western intelligence views Russia as a leading suspect, based on previous attacks using a similar substance and method, a Western intelligence official told CNN. The official cautioned that it is still early in the investigation.

In a statement to members of Parliament, UK Home Secretary Amber Rudd refused to be drawn on who might have been responsible.

"The use of a nerve agent on UK soil is a brazen and reckless act -- this was attempted murder in the most cruel and public way," Rudd said.

"People are right to want to know who to hold to account but if we are to be rigorous in this investigation we must avoid speculation and allow the police to carry on their investigation."

Rudd said the UK government was committed to "doing whatever we can to bring the perpetrators to justice" and would "act without hesitation as the facts become clearer."

Skripal, 66, and Yulia, 33, were found slumped Sunday on a bench near a shopping center. A police officer who helped them was also exposed to the nerve agent but his condition has improved. That officer is Bailey, according to Wiltshire police spokeswoman Emma Morton.

Earlier Thursday, Rudd said that Skripal and his daughter were in a "very serious condition" but that the policeman was "talking and engaging."

The Russians are trying to spin heavily on this story.

    https://www.seattletimes.com/nation-...spys-wife-son/

British investigators examine graves of Russian ex-spy’s wife, son

LONDON — British authorities investigating the poisoning of a former Russian spy, Sergei V. Skripal, and his daughter visited the graves of Skripal’s wife and son in the cathedral city of Salisbury, England, on Friday.

Dressed in hazardous-material suits, the investigators began collecting evidence at Skripal’s house in the city and erected a blue forensic tent around the grave of the son. The police said they had requested military assistance to “remove a number of vehicles and objects from the scene.”

Skripal’s wife, Lyudmila, 59, died in 2012 of uterine cancer, according to records from the National Health Service. His son Alexander, 43, died last year.

Authorities did not provide details, saying only that they had not exhumed any bodies, but the forensic activities at the London Road Cemetery intensified speculation about the poisonings.

Skripal, 66, and his daughter, Yulia S. Skripal, 33, were found unconscious Sunday afternoon on a bench outside a shopping center.

Police said the two had been poisoned with a nerve agent difficult to produce outside a government laboratory, heightening suspicions that Russia had played a role.
A day earlier, a presenter on Russia’s Channel One news program struck a different tone, saying — without mentioning names — that the poisonings should serve as a warning to Russians considering betraying their country.

The profession of a traitor is one of the most dangerous in the world,” said the presenter, Kirill Kleimenov, adding: “Don’t choose Britain as a place to live.”

In 2006, Skripal was convicted in Russia of being a double agent and secretly passing classified information to British intelligence. In 2010, he was pardoned, released from prison and sent to Britain as part of a spy exchange with Western agencies.

"The use of a nerve agent on UK soil is a brazen and reckless act -- this was attempted murder in the most cruel and public way,"

    Now, . . . back to that Christopher Steele connection . . .

Spy poisoning: Theresa May to give fresh details in 5pm statement to Commons

Theresa May is to disclose fresh information about the Salisbury poisoning outrage in an address to the House of Commons at 5pm today.

The Prime Minister is expected to formally link the attempted murders of Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia to Russia
and could also announce initial retaliatory measures against Moscow.

Mrs May this morning chaired a meeting of the National Security Council, when she was updated by representatives of MI5, MI6, GCHQ,
the Armed Forces and the police.

It comes as a senior MP warned that England fans could be targeted by Russia during the 2018 World Cup if the Government takes tough action against the Kremlin.

Theresa May says 'highly likely' Russia responsible for Salisbury poisoning attack

The prime minister said it was "highly likely that Russian was responsible for the act against Sergei [his daughter] Yulia Skripal," and warned that Moscow now has until the end of Tuesday to disclose the details of its Novichok nerve agents program to the the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). If a credible response is not received, London will consider the poisoning as the use of force on British territory, she noted.

May stressed that there can no longer be any question of 'business as usual' with Russia, and warned that Britain will stand ready to take more extensive measures against Moscow.

Russian state TV warns 'traitors' not to settle in England

Russian state television has warned “traitors” and Kremlin critics that they should not settle in England because of an increased risk of dying in mysterious circumstances.

“Don’t choose England as a place to live. Whatever the reasons, whether you’re a professional traitor to the motherland or you just hate your country in your spare time, I repeat, no matter, don’t move to England,” the presenter Kirill Kleymenov said during a news programme on Channel One, state TV’s flagship station.

“Something is not right there. Maybe it’s the climate. But in recent years there have been too many strange incidents with a grave outcome. People get hanged, poisoned, they die in helicopter crashes and fall out of windows in industrial quantities,” Kleymenov said.

The stark warning comes as the former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, remain critically ill in hospital after being poisoned with a nerve agent in Salisbury. Moscow has labelled speculation that they were targeted by the Kremlin security services as an “anti-Russian campaign”.

A number of Kremlin critics have met grisly ends in Britain in recent years. Boris Berezovsky, an oligarch turned government critic, was found hanged at his home in Berkshire in March 2013. The coroner delivered an open verdict. Alexander Litvinenko, a former FSB security service officer, died in 2006 after being poisoned with polonium-210 in the lobby of a Mayfair hotel, allegedly by Russian hitmen. Vladimir Putin dismissed accusations of Russian involvement.

In 2012, Alexander Perepilichnyy, a former banker who was helping Swiss prosecutors investigate a Russian-linked money-laundering scheme, died after collapsing in Surrey. A pre-inquest hearing heard that traces of a chemical that can be found in the poisonous plant gelsemium were later found in his stomach. The inquest is due to resume next month.

Stephen Curtis, a millionaire lawyer with close ties to the exiled Russian tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky, died when his helicopter crashed close to Bournemouth airport in 2004. Curtis is reported to have told a close relative that if he were to die, it would not be an accident. One of Curtis’s associates, Scot Young, who had business links to Berezovsky, was found impaled on railings after falling from his apartment in Marylebone, central London, in 2014. The coroner found insufficient evidence to rule it a suicide, and his family suspect he was murdered
