A Sun-Sentinal investigation the same year found that the sheriff had routinely handed out taxpayer-funded jobs to political supporters. The sheriff’s response at the time: “lions don’t care about the opinions of sheep.”

To be clear, they have no obligation to attempt to protect anyone and during most every shooting they have waited until gunfire ceases before attempting to contact the suspect.

Same as Columbine, Sandy Hook etc.

Florida school shooting: Sheriff got 18 calls about Nikolas Cruz's violence, threats, guns

PARKLAND, Fla. — Broward County deputies received at least 18 calls warning them about Nikolas Cruz from 2008 to 2017, including concerns that he "planned to shoot up the school" and other threats and acts of violence before he was accused of killing 17 people at a high school.

The warnings, made by concerned people close to Cruz, came in phone calls to the Broward County Sheriff's Office, records show. At least five callers mentioned concern over his access to weapons, according to the documents. None of those warnings led to direct intervention.

In February 2016, neighbors told police that they were worried he “planned to shoot up the school” after seeing alarming pictures on Instagram showing Cruz brandishing guns.

About two months later, an unidentified caller told police that Cruz had been collecting guns and knives. The caller was “concerned (Cruz) will kill himself one day and believes he could be a school shooter in the making,” according to call details released by the Sheriff's Office.

A second cousin asked police to take away Cruz's guns after his mom died Nov. 1. "Nikolas is reported to have rifles and it is requested that (deputies) recover these weapons," the dispatcher noted from the call.

The new details add to the growing list of red flags missed by law enforcement officials, including the FBI, in the months leading up to last week's mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The FBI is reviewing why a tip last month called into the agency about Cruz's desire to kill people was not forwarded to Miami agents for investigation.

After the February 2016 call, a deputy forwarded the information to the Stoneman Douglas School Resource Officer, Deputy Scot Peterson.

“Third hand information received from neighbor’s son that Nikolas Cruz planned to shoot up the school on Instagram (Picture of juvenile with guns)," according to the notes from a dispatcher taking the call.

The deputy had "determined Nikolas Cruz possessed knives and a BB gun" before passing it along to Peterson. It's not clear what, if anything, Peterson did with the information.
In late November, Palm Beach County deputies responded to a battery call after Cruz punched Rock Deschamps, the 22-year-old son of Roxcanne Deschamps, who took him in after his mother died. Rock Deschamps told deputies he didn’t want to press charges.

In 2008, Broward deputies received their first call involving Cruz, 10 at the time, after a boy threw a rock at him and Cruz retaliated, records show.

The violent incidents became more frequent in Cruz’s adolescence.

In 2012, his mother called police after Cruz hit her with a "plastic hose from the vacuum cleaner," according to a summary of the call.

The summary noted the "matter resolved. No report initiated."

The next year Cruz’s mother called again after he threw her against the wall because she took away his Xbox game system.

A counselor at Henderson Behavioral Health responded and advised that involuntary commitment wasn’t warranted. Cruz "punched the wall because she took away his Xbox" another time, according to a summary of a call to deputies.

"Deputy responded. No crime identified by deputy," the dispatcher noted.
Friends and relatives said Cruz — diagnosed with depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and autism — had a long history of violent outbursts.

“He’d lose his temper, hit walls, throw things," said Paul Gold, a former boyfriend of Roxcanne Deschamps who had known Cruz for eight years and drove him to his mother’s funeral. "Not the kind of kid who’d you’d put a gun in his hand.”

Deputies also were told Cruz could be a danger to himself. On Sept. 28, 2016, deputies and social workers were called to Stoneman Douglas High School after receiving reports that Cruz had attempted suicide by drinking gasoline a week earlier and was cutting himself.

Authorities chose not to commit Cruz at the time under the Baker Act, a law in Florida that allows authorities to hospitalize people for mental evaluation. The decision came under the advisement of clinicians at Henderson Behavioral Health, which school counselors worried may have been "premature" in their advice, according to the DCF notes.

    ^^^This.

The actions of the Broward deputies are a clear unambiguous example of this fact right out in the open for everyone to see.

Not One—BUT FOUR COPS—Cowered In Fear as Kids Were Murdered in FL Shooting

    http://thefreethoughtproject.com/not...d-fl-shooting/

The two departments who responded to the Parkland shooting are now blaming each other for their shortfalls as four cops were seen cowering in fear instead of saving lives.

By John Vibes February 24, 2018

Broward County Sheriff’s Deputy Scot Peterson resigned this week after a video showed him cowering in fear while there was a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Now it has been revealed that there were three other officers who were taking cover instead of trying to help. All of the officers who hid were apparently from the Broward County Sheriff’s office and were the first to arrive on the scene.

They apparently waited for reinforcements before doing anything, but according to officers with Coral Springs Police Department, the Broward County officers remained outside and did not immediately follow them to apprehend the suspect.

According to CNN, during a vigil after the tragedy, Coral Springs City Manager Mike Goodrum confronted Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel over the actions of his deputies, saying that it could have cost some of those children their lives. This issue has caused a bit of drama between the two police departments who are now both bitterly criticizing one another’s response to the shooting.

The two departments have since engaged in a childish finger pointing ritual.

Coral Springs Police Chief Tony Pustizzi wrote in an internal memo that “I understand that another agency has given the impression that it had provided the majority of the rescue efforts, and that the tremendous work of the Coral Springs Police and Fire Departments has not been recognized. Please know that this issue will be addressed, and the truth will come out in time.”

Meanwhile, Sheriff Israel hit back saying that Coral Spring Police showed up late and entered the school after the shooter had already escaped.

“We know it was approximately four minutes after the shooter departed the school when the first Coral Springs police officers arrived. We’re investigating every aspect of this,” Israel told the Miami Herald.

The poor response from many of the officers involved has sparked outrage across the country.

Donald Trump even called officer Peterson a “coward” saying that “He trained his whole life. When it came time to get in there and do something, he didn’t have the courage or something happened, but he certainly did a poor job, there’s no question about that. He was there for five minutes, for five minutes that was during the entire shooting. He heard it right at the beginning, so he certainly did a poor job. That’s a case where somebody was outside. They’re trained. They didn’t react properly under pressure or they were a coward.”

In light of this recent scandal, it is important to remember the precedent that was set in the 1981 Warren v. District of Columbia court case. In this case, it was revealed that the police actually have no duty to protect individuals, they just have some vague duty to uphold the law, which allows them to avoid any type of responsibility in situations like this.

    According to the decision:

In a 4-3 decision, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals affirmed the trial courts’ dismissal of the complaints against the District of Columbia and individual members of the Metropolitan Police Department based on the public duty doctrine ruling that “[t]he duty to provide public services is owed to the public at large, and, absent a special relationship between the police and an individual, no specific legal duty exists”. The Court thus adopted the trial court’s determination that no special relationship existed between the police and appellants, and therefore no specific legal duty existed between the police and the appellants.

While the propaganda of our society portrays agents of the state as heroes, they are nothing more than average men and women, going to work to collect a paycheck, while cutting as many corners as possible in the process, like most of the rest of the world is. Only in their job, cutting corners is a matter of life and death.

Up until Columbine, they were trained to maintain a perimeter until SWAT arrived. After Columbine, they are trained to stop the killing, even if it means going in alone.

One guy is a coward, That's that. Four guys behaving the exact same way? That's a training issue. The Sheriff needs fired.

More of a morality/courage issue I think, or lack there of.

Some people are raised to protect kids others to take care of only themselves, whether it learnin' (morals) or courage (breeding) doesn't matter one whit in the end...

Who is "they"? The local constabulary in Jefferson County, Colorado? Who else? Is this uniform nationwide?

The good news is that if the people of Broward County, Florida don't like what they saw, they can do something about it. And they don't have to talk the voters in any other county or any other state into caring about the incompetence of their sheriff to do it. When the police get federalized, the people of Broward County, Florida, or Jefferson County, Colorado, or any other place in this nation will not have that luxury. We will have to convince voters nationwide that our county sheriffs are more important than abortion and gay marriage and their own county sheriffs and everything else in order to get some local relief and local reform.

    Something to look forward to.

In the meantime I find it disturbing to see the tens of thousands of local law enforcement agencies across the land referred to collectively as "they". It seems like nothing but a way to convince us that they are already monolithic, that the disease which infects one must necessarily already infect them all. I see that day coming. I prefer not to rush it along with sloppy language.

Poor choices of voluntary collaborators may further undermine the already weak legitimacy of an occupation regime. John Hickman identifies thirteen reasons why occupied populations might hold collaborators in contempt.[4]

    • perceived as scapegoats for defeat
    • perceived as opportunistic
    • perceived as benefitting from their own poor decisions as leaders before the occupation
    • perceived as violating the norms of the traditional political order
    • perceived as having no lasting political loyalties
    • perceived as guilty of more than collaboration
    • perceived as cowardly
    • perceived as deceived by the occupier
    • perceived as self-deceived
    • perceived as cheaply bought
    • perceived as diverting political focus
    • perceived as representing powerlessness
    • perceived as escaping their own guilt
