SpaceX launches demo satellites for its high-speed internet project

SpaceX's internet ambitions have the support of Federal Communications Commission chairman Ajit Pai. On February 14, Pai urged the FCC to approve SpaceX's broader proposal to deliver "broadband services directly to [people] anywhere in the United States or around the world" at speeds similar to the quickest ground-based internet connections.

Lots of news about it, you'd almost think it was a success. Maybe in the future people will talk about Elon Musk like they do Nikola Tesla and say he developed a way to bring free wireless INTERNET to the world but the ISPS and the government colluded to stop him.

Elon Musk's SpaceX launches the first of nearly 12,000 'Starlink' satellites that could bring super-fast internet to billions of people

    • SpaceX has launched the first of nearly 12,000 'Starlink' satellites as part of its latest Falcon 9 rocket launch
    • A constellation of the satellites will provide low-cost broadband internet service from low Earth orbit
    • The flight lifted off from a launchpad at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 2:17pm GMT (9:17am ET)
    • SpaceX planned to recover rocket parts as a means of cutting costs via a boat carrying a net in the Pacific
    • CEO Elon Musk has now confirmed the boat, called 'Mr Steven', missed its target by 'a few hundred meters'

The billionaire has previously compared the contraption, four metal struts attached to a net, to 'a giant catcher's mitt'.
Confirming that the fairing had re-entered Earth's atmosphere and deployed its parachute successfully, Musk wrote during the launch: 'Made it back from space and fairing parafoil just deployed. Now trying to catch it'.
But less than an hour later, he added: 'Missed by a few hundred meters, but fairing landed intact in water. Should be able catch it with slightly bigger chutes to slow down descent.'

Recovering the fairings of future flights could save SpaceX an estimated $5 million (£3.6m) per launch and would mark a key step in making spaceflight more affordable.
Despite the failed recovery mission, SpaceX confirmed the rocket successfully propelled its payload into Low Earth Orbit.

...which is certainly feasible, considering it has already been done.

Not sure why it's so newsworthy, though. Viasat didn't draw all this publicity.

The main difference is they are put in a lower orbit and have a lot more satellites so its supposed to be low latency once its fully operational.

    What exactly is latency, anyway?

Latency is a measurement of time delay in any kind of system. In satellite communications, it’s the length of time that it takes our signal to travel from your home to the satellite in orbit above the Earth), and then down to a ground-based gateway which connects you to the internet. Each leg of that journey is about 22,300 miles, which sounds like a long way until you realize that our signal travels at the speed of light ( 186,282 miles per second). The whole round-trip is measured in milliseconds, often referred to as “ping.” The ping on satellite internet is usually around 638 ms, compared to ping of 30 ms or less on a typical cable network.

We are much happy to know this news because I'm fond of solar product from long time and these days it has become too much affordable. I’m happy because even I’m working this field only. Solar will grow to be the least expensive source to make power in several nations during the next 15 decades, according to another report by Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Section of this cheap solar energy will be unleashed since the price of installing solar panels in large solar farms and on rooftops will fall 60 percent to an estimated average of about four cent s per kilowatt hour by 2040, the report stated. That is less expensive than coal and natural gas electricity in several areas. A restricted number of solar jobs in bright and solar-friendly areas Enjoy in Mexico have gotten to this ultra-low four cent price this year. But these jobs have managed to maximize costs by building at enormous scale, around miles of property, and selling electricity. By 2040, the more expensive procedure for installing solar Panels on residential rooftops may be economical. At Exactly the Same time, Large scale utility solar jobs could even fall in the assortment of Three cents a kilowatt hour. Check this site they are top solar product selling company they are selling products at very much affordable prices.

Isn't storage the problem (big expense), when the sun don't shine?

Or is that figured into the low energy cost you cite?
