Dutch Finance Minister Admits He Lied About Putin's Plans For A "Greater Russia"

In a shocking admission, Dutch Foreign Minister Halbe Zijlstra said he lied when he claimed to have heard President Vladimir Putin describing an ambition to unify Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, the Baltic states and Kazakhstan into a single super-state to rival the influence of the former Soviet Union.
Zijlstra claimed at a party conference in 2016 that he had overheard Putin outlining the grand plan for a "Greater Russia" in 2006 during a gathering of businessmen. At the time, Zijlstra was working at Shell, RT reports.

The anonymous source of the story that Zijlstra supposedly was trying to protect, Jeroen van der Veer, has told what happened.

Van der Veer has admitted that he did tell Zijlstra about Putin talking about “Greater Russia” at the meeting in the dacha in 2006: http://www.dutchnews.nl/news/archive...sia-ambitions/

Jeroen van der Veer has said that Halbe Zijlstra had misunderstood what he told him.
Van der Veer understood that the comment of Putin about “Greater Russia” was only in the “historical” sense.
Putin was talking about the good old days...

    Zilstra Resigns

Dutch Foreign Minister Halbe Zijlstra has announced his resignation, effective immediately. ... Since admitting he made the whole thing up ... he’s also set the stage for a vote of no confidence on Prime Minister Mark Rutte that could bring down his government. Rutte is defiant, however, insisting that while Zijlstra’s story might be made up ... it shouldn’t be that big of a deal ...

Today the Dutch news paper AD announced that none other than disgraced former foreign minister Halbe Zijlstra is a candidate to be the next Dutch representative to the World Bank in Washington DC (to succeed Frank Heemskerk).

Reportedly Prime Minister Mark Rutte (who coincidentally studied history in Leiden with now King Willem-Alexander) is trying to get Zijlstra nominated for the role.

There are some concerns that there could be objections: https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2018/0...epresentative/

But in a country ruled by the House of Orange the “opposition” is expected to lay low when a former executive for Royal Dutch Shell gets a nice job...
