Give Florida schoolchildren 1 lb. bullet-resistant plates in their backpacks to make it feel like your "saving the children",
but keep the backpacks stored in the hall, and watch the children die.

Textbooks would stop a bullet. You don't need the insert.

And you definitely don't need the insert in a backpack sitting outside in the hall - effin' dumb arse administrators.

This age small children depicted do not even have any heavy enough textbooks anyway, though but decent suggestion
    from parent(s).
It reminds me though, it had to be 3rd through 6th sometime as I switched schools and
from that elementary school I would specifically carry home an extra wide, regular hardcover Geography book -
it made a decent book to sit on while sliding down a small hill on the walk home when snow was on the turf - lol

It would have worked, but kids aren't taught that so much . . . too much at work playing.

This is an idea that I've thought of years ago, but I did not do it because of this very reason. They dont allow the backpacks in class.

Its not a dumb idea, when considering the options available today. I've always thought the best option, however, is to let teachers who are willing to arm themselves, be armed.

Some textbooks are bulky enough, but a lot of schools are doing tablets - they're cheaper when considering total cost for multiple books. My kids are getting older, but they're still too young to have those bulky text books - most of theirs are those thin workbooks that they have in elementary school.

Hey kids, your titanium composite clipboard - or notebook case - doubles as a nifty "shield" for the
situations when the donut patrol guys in blue are too afraid to come into our school under attack
