These guys build their own too. Different batteries, probably less expensive. I'd guess there is a premium attached with the Tesla name and packaging to fit in their car.

I would note that these guys get recycled batteries from laptops to use by going through massive amounts of them and testing each one. The average person can not do this. It is hard to get them, and it's labor intensive and time consuming.Originally Posted by Brian4Liberty
While what Thomas did was not simple, it was certainly easier than building the power wall power cells basically from scratch.
If I understand it correctly, Tesla (with government subsidies?) is pricing their power walls so cheap that alternatives are not terribly competitive unless you are a techie with a lot of time to spend on it.

Tom better hope the local Kentucky electrical inspector doesn't go to his house and shut him down.
So he was charging his car off his solar system with old wore out acid batteries?
Actually, that is what started this to begin with.
The way I remember it, when he built his house it exceeded code. But the corrupt local government wouldn't pass him. He couldn't get power run to his house until he had a cert of occupancy which of course requires passing code. So he said "yall can shove it" and decided to just live off the grid ha ha ha. Then he started doing the geothemal, batteries, and solar. And then he ran for local office to try and clean up his local government.

Salvaged though? Massie had to get it from a salvaged vehicle, tesla won't sell just the battery - they have batteries that they do sell that could be used for off grid people, but they don't sell them to off-grid people so he had to drive to Georgia to buy it off this salvage guy.
