Erdogan Promises to ‘Choke’ U.S.-Backed Kurdish ‘Horde of Murderers’ in Syria

    http://www.breitbart.com/national-se...h-force-syria/

by EDWIN MORA, 15 Jan 2018

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed on Monday to annihilate a 30,000-strong Kurdish-majority force in Syria that has the backing of the United States.
The U.S.-led coalition is expected to deploy the new “Border Security Force,” largely made up of members of the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG/YPJ), to the Turkey-Syria border soon.

“The US has admitted to setting up a terrorist army along our country’s borders. Then, our role is to choke this army of terror before it is born,” declared an angered President Erdogan, reports Kurdistan 24.

Ibrahim Kalin, a spokesman for Erdogan, also said Turkey has the right to defend itself against “terror groups” on its terms and time, adding that the U.S.-backed Kurdish force is “unacceptable,” notes Reuters, citing the state-run Anadolu Agency.

“Turkey will continue to take all necessary precautions aligned with its national interest to preserve its national security,” added the spokesman.

Turkey has long considered the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) and its armed wing, the YPG, to be terrorists.

Nevertheless, Syrian Kurdish troops have been leading the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish-Arab alliance made up mostly of YPG troops, in ongoing efforts to push the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL) out of Syria.

The anti-ISIS U.S.-led coalition’s support for the Syrian Kurds has strained relations between NATO allies Turkey and the United States.

Meanwhile, Russia and Turkey have grown closer, allegedly working together to end the Syrian civil war.

To the dismay of Turkey and Russia, the U.S.-led coalition is now working with the SDF to set up a new border force of 30,000 troops, which Erdogan dismissed as “a horde of murderers,” warning the United States that Ankara would not be “responsible for unwanted consequences.”

“The coalition is working jointly with the SDF to establish and train the new Syrian Border Security Force (BSF),” Ryan Dillon, spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition, revealed in a statement.

    Reuters reports:

The force will be deployed along the border with Turkey to the north, the Iraqi border to the southeast, and along the Euphrates River Valley, which broadly acts as the dividing line separating the U.S.-backed SDF and Syrian government forces backed by Iran and Russia.

The [U.S.-led] coalition said the BSF would operate under SDF command and around 230 individuals were currently undergoing training in its inaugural class.

Citing a statement from the coalition’s Public Affairs Office, Reuters explains that the border force “will be providing border security through professionally securing checkpoints and conducting counter-IED [improvised explosive devices] operations.”

Russia, which has helped Syrian dictator Assad stay in power, has come out against the U.S.-supported border force, claiming it could lead to the partition of Syria.

Syrian Kurds have already combined Kurdish-led autonomous areas in northern Syria into an independent federal system.

“The [U.S.] actions that we have been observing indicate that the U.S. does not want to keep Syria as a state in its current borders … The U.S. wants to help the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to set up some border security zones,” proclaimed Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on January 15.

“There is a fear that they are pursuing a policy to cut Syria into several pieces,” added Lavrov.

The Russian minister acknowledged that America’s “unilateral” army plan might harm Turkey’s relations with Kurds.

Last month, Russia claimed it would start to withdraw its troops from Syria, adding that it would keep operating some bases in the country “on a permanent basis.”

Although ISIS has lost significant territory to the U.S.-led coalition and its allies, including the Kurds, as well as to the Iran and Russian-backed Assad troops, some Kurds believe the fight in Syria is far from over.

“The [ISIS] campaign is not over. Now, the more difficult phase has started,” Aldar Khalil, a member of the Movement for a Democratic Society (TEV-DEM), an umbrella group made up of various political parties, including the PYD, told Reuters.

He predicted that the Syrian conflict may even “grind on” until 2025, adding that the offensive against ISIS is nowhere in sight.

Washington's new proxy army inside Syria

U.S.-led coalition spokesman Ryan Dillon announced the plan to establish a 30,000-strong new border security force with the SDF -- the U.S.-backed group that is largely controlled and manned by the PKK/PYD terrorist organization in Syria.

Dillon mentioned that this army will be provided with both theoretical and technical information as well as military training and high-tech equipment. ...

“Washington holds that Turkey's interests should be confined to Turkish borders, and the U.S. interests extend to the whole world. ...

first and foremost, such a policy is directed against Iran. “But it's also against Turkey. Turkey is too independent, according to Washington ...

separation of Syria was one of the main goals of the U.S. from the very beginning. At first, they put their stakes on radicals but after the terrorists were defeated, they started to support separatists .... "The goal is to divide Syria, if not overthrow the leadership of Syria, then to leave American troops and to have an army loyal to the United States and Israel.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan Tuesday called on NATO to take a stance against the United States ... over its plans to form a 30,000-strong Kurdish-led border security force in Syria.

Erdogan Monday accused the United States of creating an “army of terror” in Syria along the border with Turkey, and vowed to crush the U.S.-backed border force. ...

Erdogan questioned NATO’s stance on the issue, saying, “Hey NATO! You are obliged to take a stance against those who harass and violate the borders of your members.”

The coalition has said the new force, expected to reach 30,000 in the next several years, is a key element of its strategy in Syria to prevent the resurgence of [Syria or um no um] Daesh in Syria. ...

Turkey has sent reinforcements to its border in recent weeks and Erdogan said this week that Turkish troops were already firing artillery at Afrin from the border.

“What are the benefits of establishing such an army?” he asked. “It will open the door wide for a future struggle in the region. It could open the door to the future partition of Syria.”

    Chemical Attack

Alleged 'Assad' chemical attacks on Monday.....

US rejects Moscow-proposed UN mechanism to probe Syria chemical attacks based on facts

“We want to rise above the differences and propose [the] creation of a new international investigative body, tasked with establishing facts and seeking those responsible for the use of chemical weapons in Syria “based on the impeccable and irrefutable data obtained in a transparent and credible way,”
Russia’s permanent representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzia told the Security Council on Tuesday.

The mandate of the Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM) of the UN and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) expired in November
following a number of failed attempts by the UNSC to extend its authority.
Moscow has repeatedly criticized JIM’s handling of the investigation of chemical attacks in Syria, including the April incident in Khan Shaykhun in Idlib province.

Moscow believes that JIM’s investigations were full of “systemic deficiencies” and speculations, lacked hard evidence,
while its conclusions were often drawn from statements made by questionable sources.
The main point of contention is that the team did not honor the basic chain-of-custody principle,
which required OPCW to obtain on-site biomedical and environmental samples.

A United Nations Security Council meeting was called by Russia.

US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, however, fervently rejected the Russian proposal, shifting gears to accuse Moscow of trying to shield Bashar Assad.

“When Russia doesn’t like the facts, they try and distract the conversation. That’s because the facts come back over and over again to the truth Russia wants to hide –
that the Assad regime continues to use chemical weapons against its own people,” Haley told the Security Council.

“The United States and the international community are not going to be fooled. We remain steadfast in pursuing accountability for those who use chemical weapons,"

    Russian Response

“The fact that our resolution was outright dismissed says volumes.
This once again reveals the truth, that we sadly already know.
The United States of America does not need an independent, professional mechanism.
Not only do you reveal the truth, but you show your true colors in front of the international community.”

Reports surfaced of a possible chlorine gas attack on Monday, in which more than 20 civilians were allegedly injured.

and have not yet been independently verified.

Russia suggests setting up UN Independent Mechanism of Investigation for Syria
According to the Russian diplomat, the Syrian government invited OPCW investigators to districts liberated from militants,
where abandoned warehouses with chemical weapons were found.

“We have access. We are trying to organize a visit by the OPCW Fact-Finding Mission from The Hague,
so that [they] can take a look at this and make conclusions,”

In August 2017, Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad told reporters in Damascus
that hand grenades and grenade launcher rounds laden with irritants were found in abandoned militant arms depots.
He said those munitions were manufactured on the territory of the United States and the United Kingdom.

On Tuesday, the UN Security Council hold an emergency meeting on Russia’s initiative to discuss allegations of a new chemical incident in Syria.
During the meeting, Russia’s UN envoy Vasily Nebenzya announced that Russia has prepared a draft resolution
on setting up a new international investigative body be set up to establish facts of chemical incidents in Syria,
which will operate “on the basis of scrupulous and incontestable evidence received by means of transparent and reliable methods.”.

Germany hardened its stance Thursday against Turkey over its military offensive against a Kurdish militia in Syria, which threatened to end a thaw in frosty relations between the NATO partners.Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel voiced "great concern" about Turkey's cross-border military incursion, called for NATO to discuss the situation and said Berlin would put on ice any weapons deals.
Most painfully for Turkey, he postponed for at least several months a request to upgrade German-made Leopard tanks which Ankara has deployed in its operation against the Syrian-Kurdish militia YPG.
Gabriel said Berlin and Paris were committed "to stopping a further escalation, to allowing humanitarian access and protecting the civilian population. That has top priority".
Germany is home to three million ethnic Turks and hundreds of thousands of Kurds, and tensions heightened by the military conflict have again spilled into the EU country.
Kurdish protesters brawled with Turkish air passengers at Hanover airport on Monday, while in the eastern city of Leipzig attackers smashed the windows of mosques run by the Turkish-controlled Ditib organisation.

Turkey says U.S. has promised to stop arming YPG, warns Washington on Manbij

U.S. National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster told Erdogan's spokesman, Ibrahim Kalin, in a telephone call that the United States would no longer provide weapons to the YPG, the Turkish presidency said on Saturday.
"It was emphasized that Turkey's legitimate security concerns must be paid attention to. It was agreed that close coordination would be carried out in order to avoid misunderstandings," it said.
The agreement is likely to be seen by Ankara as a substantial diplomatic victory from the incursion, where Turkish troops and their Syrian rebel allies appear to have made modest advances, as heavy rain and poor weather have hampered air strikes and progress on the ground.
Turkey's foreign minister said the United States needed to follow up its promise with concrete action, including the immediate withdrawal of its troops from the vicinity of Manbij.
"The United States needs to break its link with (the) terrorist organization and make them drop their weapons completely. They need to collect the weapons they gave, they need to withdraw from Manbij immediately," Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters on Saturday.
The U.S. State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment about ending arms to the YPG or exiting Manbij.
