GM Drops the Steering Wheel and Gives Robot Driver Control

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...driver-control
Next year, General Motors Co. will no longer need an engineer in the front seat babysitting the robot brain that controls its self-driving Chevrolet Bolt. The steering wheel and pedals will be gone, giving total control to the machine.
Not a good sign for the future.

The most complex device you will be able to control is going to be your phone, not your car. For your safety. And FYI, we are also looking into phones.

Can you still get arrested for DUI while riding in your newly bought fully automated vehicle?

Can you get pulled over and or ticketed for any moving violation?

Does an owner of that vehicle need to purchase insurance or does the manufacturer guarantee/insure the vehicle?

I'm not sure if you were asking this sarcastically, sincerely, or a mix of both.....but those are actually very good questions that illustrate some serious shifts going forward with things like law enforcement as they apply to automobiles and the road system that really dips it's toes off into a greater question regarding possible changes in social structure towards laws and morality.

Will automated cars drive at the speed limit and cause major traffic issues where traffic flows at 70mph in areas with posted 50mph speed limit?

These vehicles should be able to drive without any occupants. So one car can drop you off at the store, then go pick up your relative to bring to a doctor appointment, then drop off your spouse at work, then pick you up at the grocery and drop you at xyz..........

Do you think legislation will be created that will fine owners for non occupied driving vehicles? Global climate change? Or, could it be successfully argued that an occupant-less vehicle uses no more roads, energy, or contributes less of a footprint because the owner can more strategically plan where and when the vehicle goes?

Is the private solution to mass transit? No need to even own your own car anymore. Carpooling should be made easy. The rider should be able to decide if they want to be picked up and ride alone in a luxury vehicle or wants economy seating in a minivan, or want's ghetto seating at the back of a $#@!hole bus.

Will safety certification be required for all vehicles? Automated shut down of the vehicle if scheduled safety/maintenance is missed or neglected? Will vehicle just shut down on the road with fines to the owner for failing to service vehicle prior to xyz miles? Safety/maintenance must be mandated. Will these vehicles have airless tires?
Won't automobile manufacturer's sell much fewer vehicles? Won't insurance companies be rendered unnecessary? Fewer vehicles on the road, in driveways and garages. Less mechanics.
Would all work need to be done by a certified mechanic/station?

Wonder how well these things will do on dirt roads?

No, you will not own a car anymore.

You will rent one as needed, with any number of plans and options.

Travel will be more prone to delays and cancellations (think air travel).

The people pods will be programmed to follow every rule and law to the t.

Insurance and maintenance costs will be folded into the rental rates.

Prohibited areas and "public safety lockdowns" will be common. You will find yourself locked into the people pod in the event of safety a lockdown. Or possibly driven to "authorities" for arrest and detainment as government programming will override your desired destination.

You will be under total surveillance while in the people pod, positive ID will be required to activate the people pod, and a record of all travel, linked to your positive ID, while in the people pod will be recorded and kept by "authority".

    Wow this sounds just fantastic!
We will be able to know where we were at any time in the past.
This will be such a benefit.
SWATT can be eliminated because dangerous criminals can just be apprehended without incident.

Will the police force have less officers because the people pods won't be breaking traffic laws and apprehension of criminals will be effortless?

Will transportation in people pods be a "right" affording the less fortunate the same level of transportation as the rich top 1%?

I'm thinking "no" to the first.

And yes to the second, with government subsidies to pay for it.

    This will be so cool!
    The automation will be limitless.
Soon when you have a doctor appointment, everything will be automated. The doctors office will even be able to track your arrival time.
In order to take a load off of peak demands, so many things can be scheduled at off peak hours.
The government will need to play a big role in this in order to ensure its ultimate success.

Honestly, I think we're going to see a shift towards "flying cars" using basically drone technology....

There are some models now that can carry up to four passengers and they're starting retail now is around $200k. So I'd imagine we'll see drastic cost reduction as technology and volume increase, making them just as affordable as our modern automobiles.

    Maybe, in some limited fashion.

Operating in three axis mode is still more difficult than just two.

In any case, freedom to just "hit the road" and leave all your cares behind will be (is) as dead as Julius Caesar.

Yup. That's literally the stated "grand vision" from automakers and tech companies. You summon a car from your Googler phone and minutes later it wisks you away to work or Applebees while you play with your Googler.

The argument is that cars are the most underutilized asset people own. I'd argue they're underutilized because of all the regulations which make them extremely costly to own. There's going to be even more "hidden" infrastructure and regulation costs in order to implement autonomous vehicles. And that doesn't include loss of freedom, but who cares about that.
