Poll: Americans say 'fake news' is second most annoying phrase

    http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefi...nnoying-phrase

Americans say “fake news” is the second most annoying word or phrase used in casual conversation, according to a new Marist poll released Monday.

Nearly one-fourth of respondents, 23 percent, said that “fake news” was the most annoying word. The phrase, popularized by President Trump, is a new addition to the list.

For the ninth year in a row, respondents said the top most annoying word or phrase is “whatever.” One-third of all respondents said it was the most annoying, a share that was even higher when accounting for age — 40 percent of Americans age 45 and older said it was the most annoying spoken word.

Among respondents under 45 years old, the most annoying phrase was said to be “no offense, but.”

Americans have the media progressives to thank for that. Too bad progressives pushing the term to explain Hillary's loss turned against them.

"Fake news" used to mean erroneous stories. Trump uses "fake news" to describe news he disagrees with- whether it is factual or not.

To me , as an impartial bystander in the failed experiment of American politics and government , I find the phrase of fake news more relevant than Affordable Care Act fines and taxes , or any other part of the Dem platform .

The one's an unusual term (or anachronistic, its original meaning), the other's a meaningless slogan: not seeing the connection...

Every President who's ever held office has complained about unfair media coverage, real or imaginary.

Trump just does it more often, and in a more transparently self-serving way.

Please provide evidence that the term "#Fakenews" was ever used before the last election cycle.

"Fake News" is over 100 years old. https://www.merriam-webster.com/word...y-of-fake-news

The printing and dissemination of spurious news is hardly new, but the term fake news is. However, when we say that an English word is “new,” we are using a broader meaning of that word than if we were to refer to, say, a musical genre. Fake news appears to have begun seeing general use at the end of the 19th century.

The public taste is not really vitiated and it does not in its desire for ‘news’ absolutely crave for distortions of facts and enlargements of incidents; and it certainly has no genuine appetite for ‘fake news’ and ‘special fiend’ decoctions such as were served up by a local syndicate a year or two ago.
—The Buffalo Commercial (Buffalo, NY), 2 May 1891
One of the reasons that fake news is such a recent addition to our vocabulary is that the word fake is also fairly young. Fake was little used as an adjective prior to the late 18th century. But we obviously had fake news before the 1890s, so what did we call it? There was doubtless a wide range of expressions that people have resorted to when they felt the need to indicate that the newspapers had been fibbing, but one of the most common ones was false news. We can see this collocation in use as far back as the 16th century.

The French press knows little, and under laws which punish "false news," and render a journal liable to suppression if it displeases the executive power, is naturally afraid to say what little it knows.
—The Detroit Free Press, 20 Sept. 1866
So now we know that fake news has been in use for over a century, has increasingly widespread use, and has a consistent meaning: does this mean that it is a word we are watching? Er…not really.

The reason fake news is unlikely to be entered in our dictionary anytime soon is that it is a self-explanatory compound noun — a combination of two distinct words, both well known, which when used in combination yield an easily understood meaning. Fake news is, quite simply, news (“material reported in a newspaper or news periodical or on a newscast”) that is fake (“false, counterfeit”).

    No it didn't..
"Fake News" was used to describe the efforts of private investigators and reporters to cover a story the MSM and Powerful Interests don't want investigated. (pizzagate)
It was used to kill the story and investigation.

It was later picked up as any Alternate SPIN was Fake News.
Liberty is lost through complacency and a subservient mindset. When we accept or even welcome automobile checkpoints, random searches, mandatory identification cards, and paramilitary police in our streets, we have lost a vital part of our American heritage. America was born of protest, revolution, and mistrust of government. Subservient societies neither maintain nor deserve freedom for long.
