Homeland Security sets Real ID travel deadline for 2018

WASHINGTON — Airline passengers will need more secure driver’s licenses called Real ID starting Jan. 22, 2018, if they want to use them as identification at airport checkpoints, the Department of Homeland Security announced Friday.

Driver's licenses will be valid for travel identification in any state until the deadline. A passport could always be used as an alternative form of identification.

Still, the license requirement could become a challenge after the deadline for travelers in five states and a territory – Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, Washington and American Samoa – that don't comply with Real ID standards.

If a state’s license doesn't comply with the tougher security standards, travelers will have to use an alternative form of identification recognized by the Transportation Security Administration after the deadline. Options include a permanent-resident card, an airline-issued identification or a tribal identification.

By Oct. 1, 2020, all driver’s licenses must meet Real ID standards or travelers will need to carry another acceptable form of identification.
