    Major League Baseball 2018

Yeah, it's only December, but it's never too early for baseball. So crank up the hot stove league with the first story. Jack Morris and Alan Trammell are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Morris, Trammell reflect on journey to Cooperstown

Jack Morris was caught up by the moment and nearly broke down on stage. Alan Trammell was simply overwhelmed.

And as the baseball world celebrated the two newest Hall of Famers at Monday’s press conference at the Winter Meetings in Orlando, Fla., Tigers fans across the globe shared in the moment.

Morris and Trammell, who both made their big league debuts with the Detroit Tigers in 1977 and remained teammates for 14 seasons, learned on Sunday, Dec. 10, that they had been elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame via the 10-name Modern Baseball Era ballot (featuring candidates whose main contributions to the game came between 1970 and 1987).

“We're so happy to welcome you to Cooperstown,” said Hall of Fame Chairman Jane Forbes Clark. “You're now teammates again, and we'd like to ask you to put on the Hall of Fame jerseys.”

After the first members of the Hall of Fame Class of 2018 were outfitted in their new jerseys, the 318th and 319th members of the national pastime’s most celebrated squad shared their thoughts on what for them was a very emotional journey.

“Obviously, this is a very humbling point in my life,” said Morris, the righty pitcher with 254 career wins. “I am very proud and honored to join some of my heroes here and a lot of other guys that aren't here. It's been a while. It's been a tremendous learning experience for me, something that I don't regret today.

“I'm especially proud to go in with my friend and a guy who helped define who I was. It doesn't get any better for me.”

Blast from the way out past:

Giants changed history by trading for Mathewson

It was the tale of two opposite ends of a career.

Amos Rusie had starred as a dominating pitcher for the New York Giants for eight seasons highlighted by five straight seasons of 30 or more wins (1890-1894), while Christy Mathewson was an unknown 20-year old just drafted by the Cincinnati Reds for a price of $100.

On Dec. 15, 1900, a trade between these two future Hall of Famers occurred in what turned out to be one of the most lopsided deals of all-time.

Before the trade, John Brush, the Cincinnati Reds owner, was in negotiations with the New York Giants’ owner, Andrew Freedman about buying the Giants. Although Rusie compiled 248 career wins in just nine seasons, Freedman agreed to trade away the Hoosier Thunderbolt to Cincinnati in exchange for Mathewson. It turns out that Freedman was fully aware that Rusie’s arm was failing and his days were numbered.

The trade was disliked by the fans in New York. A reporter for the New York Press-Telegram described his thoughts in saying, “The Giants without Rusie are like Hamlet without the Melancholy Dane.”

A few months after the trade, Brush went on to buy the New York Giants from Freedman, receiving everything he had set out to get in the trade. He was finally in the New York market and was able to bring his superstar-to-be pitcher along with him.

Mathewson went on to win 373 games in 17 seasons with the Giants, including a streak where he won 22 games or more in 12 consecutive seasons.

He led his club to a championship in 1905, throwing three shutouts in six days in the World Series against the Athletics. Then in 1908, Matty set the modern National League record with 37 wins in a single season.
The Giants traded star pitcher Amos Rusie to the Reds on Dec. 15, 1900 in exchange for a young Christy Mathewson. Rusie appeared in just three games for the Reds in 1901 after winning 234 games over eight seasons with the Giants. (National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum)

Rusie on the other hand, pitched just three games with the Reds before calling it quits. He did not win a single outing while giving up an average of 8.3 runs per games compared to an average of 1.85 runs per game his entire career previously.

Mathewson, who passed away in 1925, was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1936 with the inaugural class.

Rusie was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1977. He passed away on Dec. 6, 1942.

In his rookie season he threw 19 complete games as a starter and closed 11 games in relief . RIP Tito Francona 1933-2018

    Excerpts from MLB article:

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- There is a black-and-white photo from 1963 that is framed and hanging inside manager Terry Francona's office at Progressive Field. His father, Tito, is in his Indians uniform, standing behind a row of kids and grinning wide. One of the smiling boys, with plump cheeks and a matching uniform, is a young Terry.

Terry grew up in the dugout -- like the one in old Cleveland Stadium captured in that photograph -- under his dad's watchful eyes, and often causing mischief when he was out of sight. Their bond was formed by the big leagues and Tito got to watch his boy grow into a ballplayer and manager. On Tuesday night, John Patsy "Tito" Francona died at his home in New Brighton, Pa. He was 84.

    ***

Francona came to Cleveland as a player in 1959 in a one-for-one trade that sent Hall of Famer Larry Doby to the White Sox. Those were big shoes to fill, but Francona quickly earned a regular place in the lineup. That season, Francona hit at a .363 clip while moving between the outfield and first base, helping the '59 Indians finish second in the American League.

    ***

His career spanned 15 seasons and included stops with eight other teams, including the Braves, Cardinals, A's, Orioles, Phillies, Tigers, Brewers and White Sox. Overall, Francona hit .272 with 125 homers, 656 RBIs and a .746 OPS in 1,719 games. Francona spent six seasons ('59-64) with the Indians and was named to his only AL All-Star team (1961) during his time in Cleveland.

Ah, the beginning of spring training.

And, going back many years ago a game was played in the desert.

Title:The surreal afternoon a baseball game was played among the great Egyptian pyramids

    Excerpts:

Whatever it is, it probably won't top where a game was played nearly 130 years ago in 1889. A group of ballplayers, led by Chicago White Stockings executive Albert Spalding, matched up in Giza amongst the great Egyptian pyramids.

    ***

A diamond was formed in the desert, with the grass on the banks of the Nile River serving as the outfield. A surreal scene, to be sure. Mark Lamster's Spalding's World Tour has more on the setup:

"The Great Pyramid, Cheops, would stand as a distant backstop behind home plate, with the Sphinx down the third-base line and the sunken tombs of the Fifth Dynasty pharaohs somewhere beneath the players' feet."

    Um, OK.

John "The Egyptian" Healy (from Cairo, Ill.) fittingly pitched for the All-Americas,...

Bob Gibson was my first choice guess at a silhouette . . . but the backdrop is too modern

also any of the 1967 White Sox rotation - Joe Horlen, (L)Gary Peters, (L)Tommy John

A's win Cactus League opener Fri in walkoff fashion . I view it as a positive . They lost so many one run games last yr that if they had won half of them they would have made the playoffs .

Are you thinking 1900s? It just covers 1990s.

But yeah, Randy Johnson is in there. You can see his long hair and 6'10" frame.

    lol -
I actually am thinking silhouettes . . . realize they are a gimp2.8 (linux or windows) photo "rasterizing" creation . . . easily ghosted into jpgs.
The first looked like Bob Gibson or Joe Horlen or Vida Blue - back drop clue to era.

Modern era - to me - is anything AFTER Larsen's World Series perfect game
Vin Scully makes the call . . . 2-0 the final from the Bronx house that Ruth built.
    Box score
    New York 2 5 0
Los Angeles 0 0 0 . . . "no runs, no hits, no errors, no walks, no base runners" . . . "in fact, nothing at all"

99-year-old Pirates usher retires after 81 seasons and 6,000 games

The 99-year-old usher has worked an estimated 6,000 Pirates games at three different ballparks, beginning his career at Forbes Field in 1936, before making the move to Three Rivers Stadium and now PNC Park.

Bartolo's Colon's gut brushes off line drive comebacker: "It hit me more on the side than in the middle," Colon said. "I have a lot of big belly, so I can take it."

Because Bartolo Colon fears nothing, he speared a 102-mph line-drive comebacker with his belly

    By Adrian Garro @adriangarro
    May 16, 2018 at 9:00pm

The Rangers beat the Mariners, 5-1, on Wednesday, benefiting from 7 2/3 innings of masterful pitching from Bartolo Colon. The 44-year-old dazzled on the afternoon, his fastballs hitting spots as they do when he's "on."

As anyone who's paid attention to Colon's late-career renaissance can tell you, he's endlessly entertaining on the hill. Sometimes, he makes leaping plays. Other times, he outruns fleet-footed players like Dee Gordon to first base. Or, as he did in the fourth inning of Wednesday's game, fearlessly uses his body to block a line drive clocked at 102-mph off the bat of Jean Segura:

That looks painful. But Colon assured reporters after the game that it wasn't, with MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan passing on this amazing quote:

"It hit me more on the side than in the middle," Colon said. "I have a lot of big belly, so I can take it."

    Same, Bart. Same.

A's win today but lost two of three to the Mariners . Missing an important opportunity to make up ground . A's remain about 3 1/2 games behind the Mariners who would be holding the last playoff spot . A's pitching was great these three games . Bats were dead .

  30. #26
Today , while I was fishing , A's get the complete game shutout by Pitcher Daniel Mengden . Win 3 - 0 off three solo homers .

  31. #27
A's pitching dominant again for the fifth of six games . Getting 11 strikeouts win 2 - 1 . They have got to get the bats going . Still about 4 1/2 games out of a playoff spot chasing the mariners . Big four games coming up with the Rays .

A's finally break the drought and get the bats going today , win 16 - 0 , about five games out of a playoff spot . Important stretch here against some teams not so good . Need to win them and make up ground .

  33. #29
With 31 wins , A's are about 6 1/2 games out of first place and about 6 games behind the playoff teams . They just have to keep winning and make up some ground . Pitching has been excellent .
