Czech Republic recognizes West Jerusalem as Israel's capital

The Czech Republic announced Wednesday that it will recognize West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, hours after President Trump's own Jerusalem declaration on behalf of the U.S.
Earlier Wednesday, Trump declared that the U.S. will recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, but the statement out of Prague specifically cited the possibility that the ancient city could serve a dual purpose in future peace talks.
“The Czech Republic together with other EU member states, following the EU Foreign Affaires Council Conclusions, considers Jerusalem to be future capital of both states, meaning the State of Israel and the future State of Palestine," the Czech Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry made clear that it only recognized the western half of Jerusalem to be Israel's capital, the borders of the city before Israel seized control of the eastern half in the Six-Day War of 1967.

While the Czech Republic broke with some other European Union members who do not recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, it said it would only consider moving its embassy there after "negotiations with key partners."

Czech President Milos Zeman, known for his controversial statements, has called EU countries “cowards” over their response to Donald Trump’s recognizing Jerusalem as the Israeli capital. He is the only world leader to endorse move, other than Netanyahu.
“The European Union, cowards, are doing all they can so a pro-Palestinian terrorist movement can have supremacy over a pro-Israeli movement,” Zeman said on Saturday, as cited by local media. He was speaking at the conference of the Movement of Freedom and Democracy (SPD), a eurosceptic and anti-immigration party.
The eurosceptic Zeman is the only world leader so far, apart from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to have officially welcomed Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

On Thursday Zeman said he is “truly happy” with Trump’s declaration, saying that the Czech Republic may also follow the lead of US in that matter.
Zeman, who has repeatedly voiced his pro-Israel stance, recalled that back in 2013 he said he “would appreciate the transfer of the Czech Embassy to Jerusalem, and had it happened, we would have been the first to do so.”
“Now we may sooner or later follow the US. In any case, it is still better than nothing,” the Czech president said.
