Airports Close, Thousands Flee As Bali's Mt Agung Volcano Erupts

As the eruption began, Indonesia’s disaster management agency mandated an evacuation zone of 10 kilometers around the volcano and raised its alert status to 10, the highest level. More than 24,000 residents were evacuated over the past two days as the airport in Bali canceled flights as a thick cloud of ash shot 6,000 meters into the sky and drifted east and southeast of the archipelago. Lombok International Airport on Pulau Lombok, the island due east of Bali, has also closed.

According to CNN, residents were evacuated from 224 points around the island, said Ari Ahsan, spokesman for Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali.
The closures came as Indonesia upgraded its Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) to red, its highest warning, and said the ash-cloud top could reach 19,654 feet or higher.

The cancellations at Ngurah Rai, Bali's main airport, stranded roughly 7,000 domestic and international passengers, according to the airport's latest report.

Indonesia's Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation raised its aviation notice from an orange alert to a red one Sunday.

BALI'S Mount Agung volcano has erupted again, spewing a 6,560ft high flume of thick ash into the air and hurling lava down its slopes.

Bali's National Disaster Mitigation Agency said the volcano erupted on the island for a third time shortly after 9pm local time (2pm UK time) on Monday.
Mount Agung towers over eastern Bali to a height of just over 9,800 feet (3,000 metres).


The National Disaster Mitigation Agency have classed Monday's eruption as "strombolian" which is the mildest form of explosive volcanic eruption.
Since September when activiy began, the volcano had been classed as "phreatic" which means non-explosive.


The National Disaster Mitigation Agency said ash was drifting west and the island’s airport was still operating normally.
There have been no reports of injures.

A volcano on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali erupted Sunday, belching ash high into the air and over nearby villages as officials warned tourists to keep clear of the area.Mount Agung has been erupting periodically since it rumbled back to life in 2017, when it grounded hundreds of flights and left 120,000 visitors stranded.
On Sunday morning, the volcano -- which is about 70 kilometres (44 miles) from the tourist hub of Kuta -- sent ash skywards as it erupted for about three minutes, according to the country's volcanology centre.
"Residents near Mount Agung as well as climbers and tourists should not carry out any activity in the danger zone or within four-kilometre radius from the crater," the centre said in a statement.

The volcanology centre also warned residents near rivers in the area to be on alert forcold lava flows -- a type of mudflow that can form from rock and ash in the rainy season and which is often a prelude to the blazing orange lava of popular imagination.

Agung's last major eruption in 1963 killed around 1,600 people.
