Thumbs up 'We are heavily armed': Florida church uses warning signs to protect congregation

With churches across the country being forced to think deeply about security following the recent assault on a church in Texas that killed 26 people and the 2015 attack on a church in Charleston, the River at Tampa Bay Church has a sign posted on the front door that reads: “Welcome to The River at Tampa Bay Church - right of admission reserved - this is private property.”
The message, signed “The Pastors”, adds: “Please know this is not a gun free zone - we are heavily armed - any attempt will be dealt with deadly force - yes we are a church and will protect our people.”

The odds of a mass shooting at a church are what again? (there are about 350,000 Christian churches alone in the US).

The odds of anybody becoming the victim of a mass shooting anywhere is extremely low.

    https://libertyunyielding.com/2014/1...ctive-shooter/

The report indicates that from the years 2000 to 2013, 486 Americans lost their lives in active shooter situations, which works out to approximately 37 deaths per year. Compare that to being killed by what everyone considers that rarest of circumstances–being struck by lightning.

Americans are 38% more likely to be killed by a lightning strike than by an active shooter.

“According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, over the last 20 years, the United States averaged 51 annual lightning strike fatalities,” wrote U.S. Air Force Flight Surgeon Capt. Rocky Jedick in 2012
    Out of 330 million people.

Drownings alone claimed 609 deaths; fires, 262 lives; poisonings, 54 lives. And don’t forget to ask about the playmate’s parents’ car and their driving records if your child will ride with them: After all, motor-vehicle accidents killed 923 children younger than 10.

Since we are discussing private citizens defending themselves it doesn't matter.

And the tool used is irrelevant in both those cases, you or your relatives have easy access to your person, people defending themselves on the other hand benefit from the capabilities of guns.

Millions of crimes are prevented by guns.

    Out of 330 million people.
Great, then folks shouldn't be asking congress for more gun control.

Millions of crimes are prevented by guns.
    Yeah- more numbers.

That’s in a nation in which there are some 300 million firearms, nearly one for every person (though only a little over a third of Americans own guns — and there’s an interesting take on that here, and on the ramifications of gun ownership on murder rates here, and while you’re reading links, this is of interest, too). This is also a nation in which, in 2012, there were 1.2 million violent crimes, defined as murder, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault.
The center also dives into the thorny thicket of how often the presence of a gun stops a crime — either violent or against property, such as a burglary — from happening. The gun lobby trots out an annual figure of 2.5 million such instances. But an analysis of five years’ worth of stats collected by the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics’ National Crime Victimization Survey puts the number much, much lower — about 67,740 times a year.
Conversely, of the 2012 criminal firearm homicides in which a relationship was reported, three out of four victims knew their killers, and more than a third were family members or "intimate acquaintances" — such as spouses, ex-spouses or others involved in a romantic relationship.
nearly half of gun owners say they keep weapons because it makes them feel safer, a proportion that has increased dramatically since 1999 even though violent crime has been in a steady decline.

I'll believe that over your FakeNews any day.

We don't even know how many crimes are prevented that are not reported or not even attempted because of people keeping and bearing arms.

So tell me where the truer to middle is. If you can spend this time coming up witha contrary counter couldn't you spend another hour or two coalescing the data and finding the center?

25 years murder-free in 'Gun Town USA

In March 1982, 25 years ago, the small town of Kennesaw – responding to a handgun ban in Morton Grove, Ill. – unanimously passed an ordinance requiring each head of household to own and maintain a gun. Since then, despite dire predictions of “Wild West” showdowns and increased violence and accidents, not a single resident has been involved in a fatal shooting – as a victim, attacker or defender.

The crime rate initially plummeted for several years after the passage of the ordinance, with the 2005 per capita crime rate actually significantly lower than it was in 1981, the year before passage of the law.

Prior to enactment of the law, Kennesaw had a population of just 5,242 but a crime rate significantly higher (4,332 per 100,000) than the national average (3,899 per 100,000). The latest statistics available – for the year 2005 – show the rate at 2,027 per 100,000. Meanwhile, the population has skyrocketed to 28,189.

By comparison, the population of Morton Grove, the first city in Illinois to adopt a gun ban for anyone other than police officers, has actually dropped slightly and stands at 22,202, according to 2005 statistics. More significantly, perhaps, the city’s crime rate increased by 15.7 percent immediately after the gun ban, even though the overall crime rate in Cook County rose only 3 percent. Today, by comparison, the township’s crime rate stands at 2,268 per 100,000.

There was one in my town. Recently. There was another in California practically the same day. And don't forget about Charleston. The odds of me being shot at church are higher than getting shot some other places, I can tell you that, and if pastors decide to advertise armed security, great. Our church is in an affluent area and we already have parking patrols due to the numbers of vehicle break ins.

Odds are great for playing with models on MSM, but in the real world the risk of not carrying that one time outweighs any risk of carrying. I'm not letting anybody tell me I can't, least of all some empty suit or a talking head, whose offices and mansions are guarded by private security.
