They want Franken out before the Roy Moore vote next week, so they can make the case that Moore can not be a Senator. Franken will take one for the team. His replacement will be another Democrat, so they aren't worried about that.

Maybe. His seat was won in a close race. IIRC there were allegations of cheating, even. Of course the political landscape was quite different.
    * Enforce Border Security – America should be guarding her own borders and enforcing her own laws instead of policing the world and implementing UN mandates.

    * No Amnesty - The Obama Administration’s endorsement of so-called “Comprehensive Immigration Reform,” granting amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants, will only encourage more law-breaking.

    * Abolish the Welfare State – Taxpayers cannot continue to pay the high costs to sustain this powerful incentive for illegal immigration. As Milton Friedman famously said, you can’t have open borders and a welfare state.

    * End Birthright Citizenship – As long as illegal immigrants know their children born here will be granted U.S. citizenship, we’ll never be able to control our immigration problem.

Set an example for Republicans to follow. Will it work though?

Be funny if it didn't. They toss Franken overboard, Moore wins anyway, and then the GOP wins the MN seat as well. (Trump won MN..)

A special election would be held in November of 2018
Gives them about a year to consolidate support and run as a virtual incumbent. Probably wouldn't have any competition in the Democrat Primary, but would against a GOP opponent in the General with a bit of the incumbent advantage.

The panel discussing this on CNN were very happy. They are saying that this will result in Roy Moore losing or never being seated in the Senate. Guess the plan is on track. Next up is weeks of MSM saying that Moore is not fit, Franken is the proof. No process required.

At first they wanted to push this off to an ethics committee, but since Roy Moore wouldn't drop out, they have to go with no process other than inciting the mobs.

Senator Al Franken (D-MN) announced he would be resigning in the coming weeks in the wake of recent allegations against him of sexual misconduct.

Now Governor Mark Dayton is throwing a wrench in the works by evidently appointing a caretaker on the condition she not seek to keep the seat, which opens the seat up to the real possibility of Republican capture in 2018 (maybe by Norm Coleman, the Republican Franken defeated in 2008).
