There is a system called the NDR (National Driver Register) and the PDPS (Problem Driver Pointer System) which has linked traffic citations across the United States. Once you are in this registry as having your license suspended you cannot get a license anywhere. If, for instance, you are driving through a town, you receive a citation and you never go to court, they create a license number for you in that state, input you into the database and when it comes time to renew your license in your state of residence you are barred from doing so. In effect they’ve created a way to nationalize driver’s licenses while keeping the arcane laws local.

It also records your DUIs. If for instance you have two DUIs in one state and then go to another state, those DUIs will be factored into your sentencing should you receive another (i.e. they enforce one state’s mandatory minimums by using another state’s convictions) DUI charges are reciprocal.
