The vehicles, however, will no longer be driven by humans because in 15 to 20 years — at the latest — human-driven vehicles will be legislated off the highways.

The tipping point will come when 20 to 30 percent of vehicles are fully autonomous. Countries will look at the accident statistics and figure out that human drivers are causing 99.9 percent of the accidents.

Of course, there will be a transition period. Everyone will have five years to get their car off the road or sell it for scrap or trade it on a module.

I suspect some cities and major highways will try to mandate it, maybe 10-15. NYC no doubt.

CA is already looking to ban all new internal combustion engine cars.

They will tie the electric cars in with the remote controlled (they are NOT "autonomous") vehicles and the old order will be swept away in a decade.

Personal mobility without total surveillance will become as dead as Julius Caesar.

IC powered automobiles will die off just as what they started off as, playthings and hobbies for the ultra wealthy and politically connected.

"Classic" car "owners" will be allowed to keep their vehicles, assuming the local liege-lord has permitted "zoning" to allow such things, but they will not be able to drive them or even start them without emission permits and special permits will be required just to obtain fuel.

Wait until some "terrorist" finally figures out that half a cup of vaporized gasoline, in the right fuel air ratio, has the explosive force of six sticks of TNT.

I would think maybe rural and more liberty minded states might get a reprieve but not on the federal highways and no doubt states would be bribed with federal funding or construction contracts or faced being denied of it.

One can only hope for more separation of state from federal powers in regions before then.

From here on out, if you see a car without a driver meandering around suburban Phoenix, don’t be alarmed: It’s just Google's Waymo division testing its new driverless taxis - the first of their kind to be tested on US roads without the supervision of a “safety driver."

Wayno has revealed that - effective immediately - it will begin testing the driverless taxis - referred to in technologist parlance as a “level 5” driverless vehicle - in Chandler, Arizona. Thew news represents an important milestone that establishes Waymo as the leader in automated driving technology. Waymo CEO John Krafcik made the announcement Tuesday during in a speech at a web summit in Lisbon, Portugal.

“We want the experience of traveling with Waymo to be routine, so you want to use our driver for your everyday needs,” John Krafcik, Waymo’s chief executive officer, said at the Web Summit conference in Portugal. “Fully self-driving cars are here."

According to Ars Technica, for the last year, Waymo has offered free taxi rides to ordinary people who live near the Phoenix suburb of Chandler. Until recently, the company's modified Chrysler Pacifica minivans had a Waymo employee in the driver's seat ready to take control if the car malfunctioned.

I reckon both will go hand in hand.

The insurance mafia loves this for a number of reasons: lower accident rates, shifting of liability and responsibility among a few reasons.

Government mafia loves this because it will allow even more surveillance and control and the ability to "lock down" giant swaths of geography remotely and quickly.

Within a couple more decades there will no longer be any human pilots, drivers or mariners allowed.

ETA - Except for members of the elite and ruling class. They will still have human "operators" or do it themselves, for their "security" and "safety".
