I have what might be a silly question. I've always wondered why humans have a large, pointy nose and great apes like chimps, orangutans and gorillas have hardly any nose at all? When did the nose evolve?

The aquatic ape theory holds that the nose gives an evolutionary advantage allowing us to go underwater/dive down. Most of the apes, chimps can't. It has to do with the unique U-shape in our nasal passage. The few other monkeys/apes that go in the water also have differently shaped noses.

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you post to the internet can and will be used to humiliate you.
The nose is an air filter. It can warm up air, it can cool down air. It can moisturize air, it can retain moisture. It can filter allergens, dust, bacteria, viruses and other small critters. Kind of a handy thing to have.
It can also play a part in mating selection, thus trending one direction or another based upon aesthetic preference.
