Powerful 7.1 earthquake strikes Mexico City

    Another one!!?

A powerful earthquake shook central Mexico on Tuesday, killing dozens of people, crumbling buildings and sending thousands in the capital fleeing into the streets screaming.

Authorities in the central Mexican state of Morelos reported 42 deaths, and officials said at least two more occurred in the State of Mexico, which surrounds the capital.

The temblor caused buildings to sway violently in the center of Mexico City, including in the historic districts of El Centro and Roma. Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera said some buildings collapsed, but it was too early to tell if there were casualties there.

The U.S. Geological Survey calculated the preliminary magnitude at 7.1. The epicenter was about 93 miles southeast of Mexico City in the state of Puebla.

3.6 is pretty small. The scale is exponential- a 4.0 is ten times as strong as a 3.0.

    http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/l...918-story.html

“We get these size earthquakes fairly frequently,” said U.S. Geological Survey seismologist Zachary Reeves. “Any severe damage would be pretty unlikely.”

Moderate shaking — or intensity 5 shaking — is defined by the USGS as “felt by nearly everyone; many awakened. Some dishes, windows broken. Unstable objects overturned. Pendulum clocks may stop.”

Light shaking, or intensity 4 shaking, is defined as having a strength that can awaken some people and disturb dishes, windows and doors; can cause walls to make a cracking sound; or provide the sensation of a heavy truck striking a building.

There were no reports of damage. It was followed by a 2.0 magnitude aftershock.

Anyway. They better quit fracking and pumping around all of these fault lines. That's just begging for some drama.

Wow, this is a bad one, as it was centered close to Mexico City. There is going to be a lot of damage. Buildings that are still standing will be demolished, along with the ones that self demolished during the quake. Gonna be very expensive.

    Some video of buildings falling:

Mexico is built on a giant lake bed atop a volcano. That is a large, hard bowl filled with softer earth. The bowl magnifies the shaking and the soft soil can liquify in a quake- causing more things to fall down.

Mexico has now had two major earthquakes and two hurricanes (Max and Katia) and at least one tropical storm hit it. Mother Nature is angry.
