According to a White House statement released today, President Trump and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani agreed that U.S. companies should aid in the development of Afghanistan’s rare earth minerals
    http://www.reuters.com/article/us-us...urce=applenews

U.S. President Donald Trump and Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani agreed at a meeting in New York on Thursday that U.S. companies could help develop Afghanistan’s rare earth minerals, the White House said in a statement.

“They agreed that such initiatives would help American companies develop materials critical to national security while growing Afghanistan’s economy and creating new jobs in both countries, therefore defraying some of the costs of United States assistance as Afghans become more self-reliant,” the White House said.

The two leaders also expressed their commitment to fully implement Trump’s new South Asia strategy to defeat terrorism, the statement said.

Afghan Army Unit Nearly Wiped Out as New Taliban Tactic Takes Toll

By TAIMOOR SHAH and MUJIB MASHAL
    OCT. 19, 2017

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan — An Afghan Army unit in the south of the country was almost completely wiped out on Thursday, defense officials said, in a Taliban attack that used what is becoming one of the group’s deadliest tactics: packing vehicles captured from security forces with explosives and driving them into military and police compounds.

At least 43 soldiers were killed in the predawn attack, out of a unit of 60 based in Maywand District in Kandahar Province, the Afghan Defense Ministry said in a statement. Only two soldiers were found unhurt. Nine were wounded, and six were missing.

“The whole base is destroyed,” said Gen. Dawlat Waziri, a ministry spokesman. “When the clashes started, they detonated a car bomb close to the base, then clashes continued for a while and then they detonated another car bomb. They also had Humvees packed with explosives.”

Two similar attacks on Tuesday inflicted heavy casualties on Afghan security forces. In those episodes, more than 40 police officers were killed in Afghanistan’s southeast, in the provinces of Ghazni and Paktia. Both involved insurgents’ taking captured vehicles, including Humvees paid for by the United States military, packing them with explosives and detonating them at the compounds.

Considering the number of such vehicles at the Taliban’s disposal, security officials and analysts fear this tactic will inflict heavier casualties on Afghanistan’s already struggling security forces.

    • The group has had a resurgence in recent months, retaking territory and killing scores of police and soldiers.

Afghan government to decide about Chinese military base: NATO

When asked about recent media reports about China plan to establish a military base in northeastern Afghanistan
in order to control Uyghur militants in the area, Stoltenberg said:
“It's impossible to solve the crisis in Afghanistan without close cooperation with the other countries in the region, and China is one of them.
But it's not for NATO to decide on whether China is going to have any kind of military presence in Afghanistan that’s for Afghanistan to decide.”

“As long as we support the government, respect the decisions of the Afghan government,
then I think the important message is that this is up for the Afghan government to decide.
We have seen the reports, but it's not for me, in a way, to have any… to give advice on that, it's for the Afghan government to decide.”

This is bad for Russia and the whole region and goes in accordance with claims that US transports ISIS members,

This is not NATO failure, this is a part of their/globalist strategy.

    https://twitter.com/realDougBell/sta...12378404782080

    The thing to be remembered is that the Taliban are primarily a Pashtun movement;
Pashtuns constitute the single largest ethnic group in multi-ethnic Afghanistan
and have traditionally dominated national Afghan politics over several hundred years.
While unquestionably following a kind of Wahhabi-style Islamic rule,
they also represent a powerful Pashtun ethnic impulse.
Many Afghan Pashtuns dislike the Taliban but they generally also wish to see Pashtuns maintain power in Afghanistan.
This same ethnic issue matters a lot when it comes to Pakistan.
