GoldenEquity, thank you for the +rep. I wish I can rep you back, but I think I need to post more, maybe?

Apologies about posting something that is unrelated; but I wanted to add this bit about the Mysore Empire which I find fascinating:

Mysorean rockets were an Indian military weapon which were the first iron-cased rockets successfully deployed for military use. The Mysorean army used the rockets effectively against the British East India Company during the 1780s and 1790s. Their conflicts with the company exposed the British to this technology, which was then used to advance European rocketry with the development of the Congreve rocket in 1805.

After the fall of Srirangapattana, 600 launchers, 700 serviceable rockets, and 9,000 empty rockets were found. Some of the rockets had pierced cylinders, to allow them to act like incendiaries, while some had iron points or steel blades bound to the bamboo. By attaching these blades to rockets they became very unstable towards the end of their flight causing the blades to spin around like flying scythes, cutting down all in their path.
These experiences eventually led the Royal Woolwich Arsenal to start a military rocket research and development program in 1801, based on the Mysorean technology. Several rocket cases were collected from Mysore and sent to Britain for analysis. Their first demonstration of solid-fuel rockets came in 1805 and was followed by publication of A Concise Account of the Origin and Progress of the Rocket System in 1807 by William Congreve,[10] son of the arsenal's commandant. Congreve rockets were systematically used by the British during the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812. They were also used in the 1814 Battle of Baltimore, and are mentioned in The Star Spangled Banner, the national anthem of the United States: And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air.[11]

U.N. torture committee wants Afghan general prosecuted

    By Tom Miles | GENEVA

The police chief of Afghanistan's Kandahar province, General Abdul Raziq, should be prosecuted over allegations of torture and enforced disappearances, the U.N. Committee against Torture said on Friday.
The committee said it was deeply concerned at numerous reports brought to its attention about the situation in Kandahar, including the use of torture methods such as suffocation, crushing the testicles, pumping water into the stomach and administering electric shocks.

A U.N. report last month said torture and mistreatment of detainees by Afghan security forces was as widespread as ever, despite promises by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and new laws enacted by the government.
The International Criminal Court in The Hague is conducting a separate review of torture in Afghanistan.

A former Communist general turned prominent politician has been killed by a Taliban bomb hidden in his sofa as he campaigned for this weekend's parliamentary election in Afghanistan.
Abdul Jabar Qahraman became the 10th election candidate to die ahead of Saturday's polls when the blast tore through his campaign office.
The Taliban took responsibility for the attack, which also killed three of Mr Qahraman's companions in the capital of Helmand province.
A Taliban statement said they had killed “a renowned communist".
The dead candidate had been a key figure in the dying days of Afghanistan's Soviet-backed government, holding military power in the south of the country until he fled into exile in 1993.
After the fall of the Taliban he return to Afghanistan and was elected as an MP, recently advising President Ashraf Ghani on security in the south of the country.

His assassination came amid final preparations for Saturday's poll where nearly nine million registered voters have a chance to choose MPs for 250 seats in parliament.
The Taliban have ordered a boycott of the election and threatened to attack anyone involved in what they call a bogus American vote.
Mr Ghani said that “such brutal acts of the terrorists and their supporters cannot weaken people's trust in the peaceful and democratic processes”.
Seven other people were wounded in the blast, the Helmand governor's spokesman told Tolo News, adding that the bomb had been placed in Mr Qahraman's sofa.
The death toll in the country's long-running insurgency has escalated in recent months, with concerns Saturday's polling will be a flashpoint for Taliban violence.
Last week 22 people were killed in an explosion at an election rally for a woman candidate in the north eastern province of Takhar, while dozens of police have been killed or wounded in attacks on checkpoints this week.

KABUL (Reuters) - A service member in the NATO-led Resolute Support mission was killed and two others wounded on Monday
in an apparent insider attack in Herat province, western Afghanistan, a statement from Resolute Support headquarters in Kabul said.

A spokesman for Resolute Support, the U.S.-led military mission in Afghanistan, described the move as “standard” practice after “green-on-blue” attacks — or assaults by Afghan security personnel against foreign forces. He said “regular contacts” were continuing by telephone and email between U.S. and Afghan security officials, with some meetings also taking place in U.S. facilities.
A senior Afghan military officer, stationed at a joint base with foreign forces, said that American troops “have been ordered not to visit the Afghan side of our base for a few days, but we can visit them on their side.” The officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive issue, also said the “joint control and command center is active.”

The Afghan government has lost control of nearly half the country to terrorist forces, the lowest levels of control since government officials began tracking the situation in November 2015, according to the latest oversight report.
The Special Investor General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, or SIGAR, noted a significant decline in the Afghan government's ability to govern the district, a decline of about 16 points. Total Afghan government control stands at 55 percent, the lowest number since November 2015. Insurgent control and influence over key regions has risen about 5.5 percent, according to the report, which highlights the U.S.-backed government's growing inability to retain influence in areas it once maintained control of.
The ongoing decline in the Afghan government's control over key territories is awakening new concerns among security officials and others who have warned that the Taliban is experiencing a resurgence despite the United States pumping billions into Afghanistan reconstruction effort over the past decade.
Independent Afghanistan experts have confirmed in recent weeks, based in part on government data, that just over half of the Afghan population is outside of the government's control.

Taliban Pummel Security Forces Across Afghanistan
    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/06/w...n-attacks.html

KABUL, Afghanistan — Dozens of soldiers and police officers were killed or captured in nine Taliban attacks that overran security bases and outposts in different parts of Afghanistan during a 24-hour period that ended on Tuesday, officials said.

In perhaps the most severe blow, insurgents captured battalion headquarters of the Afghan Border Force in Farah Province, in western Afghanistan, killing or taking prisoner nearly the entire contingent of officers, with as many as 20 dead.
In Kandahar Province, in the south, three separate attacks killed a total of 17 police officers.
And in Ghazni central province, a joint military and police outpost fell only two days after it had been set up,
with all 16 security officials there killed or wounded.

The attack on the headquarters in Farah, close to the Iranian border, destroyed the first battalion’s base in the district of Poshti Koh.
Sgt. Gholam Mohammad, the senior noncommissioned officer, said from a clinic where he had been taken with a minor head wound that, in addition to the 20 border force officers killed, 25 had been taken captive by the Taliban. Three others escaped.

BREAKING At least 26 killed in a blast in mosque in eastern Afghanistan

A blast in 203 Tander corps HQ killed and wounded 97 soldiers in Khost Mandozai district. According to sources the explosion was tactically detonated & wasn't a self-sacrificial attack. Such a high profile attack isn't easy without insiders help. Taliban have yet to comment.

Hundreds of demonstrators in Shi'ite areas of Kabul and Bamyan province in Afghanistan protested on Sunday against the arrest of an ethnic Hazara militia commanderA senior security official said Alipur, a militia leader known as "Commander Sword" accused of serious human rights abuses, was arrested in a Hazara area of western Kabul, where a spate of suicide attacks by the radical Sunni Islamic State group has fed anger at perceived government indifference to violence against Hazaras.
Kabul police spokesman Basir Mujahid said at least 23 police had been injured in the demonstrations, three having been hit by bullets fired by supporters of Alipur. There were unconfirmed reports from people at the protest that some demonstrators had also been hurt.
While the conflict in Afghanistan kills thousands of people from all ethnic groups every year, Hazaras, have felt especially targeted and there has been growing resentment among many Hazaras against Sunni Pashtuns, traditionally Afghanistan's dominant ethnic group.
Mujahid said around 1,000 people gathered in western Kabul, burning a security checkpoint as the demonstration turned violent.
"The protesters are using whatever they have in their hands against police, there are armed men among protesters," he said.
A statement from the interior ministry said peaceful gatherings were legitimate but Sunday's protests had not been agreed with authorities beforehand.
Despite the accusations against him, Alipur has enjoyed the support of powerful Hazara leaders. He also remains popular with many in the mainly Shi'ite Hazara community who see him as a Robin Hood-style figure who defends his people while the government stands by.
