My Last Post
This is my final post here. I did not just want to stop writing and disappear like Foseti and sort of like Handle. Two names from the old days, which is very appropriate. They left but shaped how we approach things. I hope y'all learned a little from stopping here. At a minimum, I nailed the state of our nation with Weimerica. This schedule got too much as responsibilities grew.
I went from 5 readers (wife, fam, + 1 friend) to orders of magnitude more. Thank you all for recommending me to others. I had actual media outlets contact me about writing for them, so I was doing something right for analysis. I have felt spread thin at times and in more areas of my life than I should have felt it. I have now learned what multiple children do for time as well as effort as they grow and can start to question why things are. Changing diapers is one thing, answering "So who made all of this" is another. It's the task of molding a little soul.
I have considered this for a while. When I wrote Driving Through Dying Blue Towns last year, too many of you guessed a town, were wrong but in doing so, revealed how widespread the decay is. The last month has crystallized it. I visited home and saw it again. We can sit by and watch it happen or show some agency. I'm tired of seeing my friends die and just providing commentary.
I visited home and didn't write and barely was 'plugged in'. I found my engagement with my immediate surroundings changed. I spent way too much time in Chatrooms, Slacks, reading, writing and planning the podcast. I didn't realize how much simply keeping tabs on things sucked time away from my family even if I tried to wait until the kids were in bed or be as efficient as possible. I think and write fast but was putting in +20 hours per week on this. I came back from vacation and said to myself, "Do I really want to keep this schedule going?" The answer is no.
Charlottesville also crystallized that I am not AltRight, and that my worldview, my solutions and my methods are completely different. How does that help the situation on the ground in any way, shape or form? There are other ways to address our general problem. Power is going to do what power wants, but I can help my immediate environment.
It's like we dreamed up a monster. We were right. It was our discovery as no one else named it. We said we understood it and felt confident we grasped it. We even modeled it. Then the monster unleashed a taste of its power and we realized we knew nothing at all.
Too many people to thank, but honestly, I was just a Reagan era conservative kid who became a libertarian then an ancap, and then moved out of a 99% white area and realized ancap wouldn't work. I found Steve Sailer's blog, and once you see a little bit of reality, it all changes. Sailer stopped answering my emails, but I'm not here without him, his linking me, and his correspondence. I have to thank Moldbug, Land, and other guys long gone like Foseti and Handle. Sometimes I'd have a flash realization and go "I get it now. Land is right".
When I first wrote as Ryan Landry, someone thought it was Handle. I said no it's me but was happy I was ripping off Handle's style well enough for people to think that. He is still a better writer than I. I found my voice though with more practice. My writing changed thanks mostly to editing by Wes at Theden and Hadley at Social Matter. I'd also have to thank Kevin Michael Grace for fatherly advice better than I heard from my dad.
So many of you have helped along the way. So many of you messaged me to say 'thanks I don't feel so alone now'. You are never alone thinking sane thoughts. Others are just scared, others are asleep and unreachable others are crazy. There are eras of madness, which is why I focused on Weimar and why Spandrell carefully focuses on Chinese historical examples. You are living in one.
I also have spent a year now telling people to get out into real life and engage. Be the lighthouse. Even Dreher gets it. Not the Spencer/Enoch type engagement but real positive activities. I would like to put into practice some of the things I have as ideas, including some I have discussed with some of you. I already have professionals biting on two of them. Half of victory is marketing. We have great ideas and work with the truth; we just need slick marketing.
I will keep writing. If you see something that looks like it is me, it might be. Maybe like Handle inspiring me, someone will pick up the slack and do a good rip off of me. I will be working privately on things and with my guys. We absolutely have to network and build infrastructure for this storm. I want to expand the network so you wonder if the competent men of your area are one of us. The great families of the middle ages were formed by those that were stable and competent during the fall of Rome. We have to create a favorable climate on the ground for our crowd to move, act and work in. We also have to create outward facing programs that funnel people to us and build outside of the current system.
We have to stop being keyboard warriors and make small changes that we can repeat all across our nation to make real change. We can't do it bottom up though. We need tangible results to present to any elite that this is a bad course we are on, and it must change. Why would they want to rule ashes? That's what their adherence to the prog system is. It's power but it's civilizational suicide. We can only find a patron if we have something tangible to show them. We have ideas, we need programs and we need the practice.
The storm is growing. Be a lighthouse.
