    Mayor assembling group to review Confederate monuments, street names in Atlanta

    Gimme a break. If they decide to change Confederate Ave, hopefully they can think of something other than Peachtree.

    For folks who don't know Atlanta...

    The Peachtree name is common throughout the Atlanta area. In fact, it is often joked by natives that half of the streets in Atlanta are named Peachtree, and the other half have five names to make up for it.[citation needed] While "Peachtree" alone always refers to this street, there are 71 streets in Atlanta with a variant of "Peachtree" in their name.

    ATLANTA - Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed says the recent events in Charlottesville, Virginia have brought renewed attention to street names and monuments linked to the Confederacy, with many elected officials, clergy and members of the public calling for their removal.

    Reed said we must continue to focus on making Atlanta a city for everyone.

    "Atlanta was burned to the ground during the Civil War, rose from the ashes and became the proud cradle of the Civil Rights Movement. Our city has shown that we can defy the darker shadows of our history. Today, our city is known across the country and world for being a beacon of equality, diversity and inclusion," he said.

    In a statement released Friday, Reed said he will assemble a group of advisors to recommend a process for the community to determine the future of each street name and marker.

    "We want to ensure that we approach this endeavor in a thoughtful manner. In the coming weeks, we will share more information about how concerned residents can support this effort," he said.

    Zimbabwe Avenue might be more appropriate as time goes by.

    Y'all are just catching up with the forward thinking progressives in Seattle. They changed names a long time ago;

    There's those curious words that keep getting used when they talk of removing flags, statues and names.

    Like it's gonna make a difference. They were trying to clean up Stewart Ave (red light district) years ago so they renamed it Metropolitan (like changing the name was actually going to clean up the $#@! hole) and nobody calls it that. Come to Atlanta and ask someone where Metropolitan Ave is and they'll tell ya it's off Peachtree because they don't know what you're talking about and everything's off a Peachtree so they're not lying.

    Mayor Reed says Atlanta streets named for Confederates will be renamed

    Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is expected to announce as early as today how the city will deal with removal, modification or renaming of Confederate iconography around the city.

    In an interview on Friday with WABE radio, Reed said he was reviewing the recommendations from a select committee charged with coming up with plan to address the fate of Confederate symbols around Atlanta. The committee was appointed by Reed and the city council.

    The committee held public meetings this fall and heard from supporters of removal as well as those who want Confederate street names, monuments and plaques left alone. The committee gave its report to Reed last week and Reed said it supported renaming streets.

    “Candidly, they want action taken immediately on streets that it really doesn’t take a scholar to understand that they’re offensive,” Reed told WABE. “So regarding streets like Confederate Avenue, East Confederate Avenue, any street named after Confederate leaders like Nathan Bedford Forrest or John B. Gordon or Robert E. Lee, they believe these should be changed immediately.”
