Magnesium found to treat DEPRESSION better than antidepressant drugs: New science

Thursday, July 20, 2017 by: Mike Adams

A breakthrough nutritional study conducted at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont and published in PLoS ONE has found that just 248mg of magnesium per day leads to an astounding reversal of depression symptoms in study subjects.

“New clinical research results show magnesium is effective at addressing symptoms and is safer and easier on the wallet than prescription therapies,” reports Science Daily, echoing the reporting of Natural News from over a decade ago. Today, even mainstream science is now confirming that magnesium is a safe, affordable and effective treatment for depression.

What’s really astonishing about all this is that while dangerous pharmaceuticals are bankrupting our nation and causing our health care system to collapse under the weight of out-of-control costs, magnesium can treat and prevent depression for mere pennies a day. Just a quarter of a gram of magnesium is all that’s necessary, and it costs less than 10 cents a day.

Plus, the powerful nutritional benefits of magnesium help prevent mineral deficiencies and chronic disease in many other ways across the body, imparting enormous benefits for cardiovascular health, brain health, kidney health and much more. Yet, astonishingly, nobody in the Republican camp is talking about reforming health care by turning to natural nutritional remedies that could save billions of dollars a year on health care expenditures. That’s why I have called out Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Dan Bongino for failing to embrace true free market solutions that include health freedom and support for nutritional therapies and natural remedies. (Republicans seem forever stuck in the pharmaceutical model of treating sickness with chemicals, then claiming it’s a “free market” when you can buy into that system across state lines, even while natural medicine is criminalized.)

    OooooOoOooOOOooooooohhhhh! ***IDEA***

Lets get a law passed that allows corporations to put patents on natural stuff, like plants and minerals and the human genome! Not only will be be able to allow Big Pharma to own a patent for Magnesium, but then Apple can also own patents on Iron, Iraq, and Iran!

(NOT sarcasm, but this is what goes on inside the minds of the sold out politicians... Yes, I do oppose owning human genetics and other frivolous patents.)

How about deregulating the industry? Insurance companies might build in incentives for wellness, including a regular relationship with doctors and the use of nutrition to promote wellness. Seems like it would reduce their costs and increase profits.

That would be good if evil and the "love of money" wasn't the driving force here.

It was the Insurance companies who helped write Romney/Obama Care [sic] in the first place.

It will also work as a laxative. And can reduce your calcium absorbtion.

Magnesium oxide is the cheapest readily available formulation, as well as magnesium citrate, which is more likely to cause diarrhea in excess. (In fact, magnesium is a great remedy for constipation). The oxide is not particularly bioavailable, but the studies I've referenced above suggest that you can top yourself off after about a month of daily supplementation. Those with short bowels (typically due to surgery that removes a large section of bowel) may want to supplement instead with magnesium oil. You can also put some Epsom salts in your bath. In addition to diarrhea, magnesium can cause sedation, and symptoms of magnesium toxicity (again, quite unlikely if your kidneys are in good shape) are low blood pressure, confusion, arrythmia, muscle weakness, and fatigue. Magnesium is taken up by the same transporter as calcium and zinc, so they can fight with each other for absorption. Jaminet and Jaminet recommend total daily levels (between food and supplements) of 400-800mg. Most people can safely supplement with 200-350mg daily without any problems (again, don't proceed without a doctor's supervision if you have known kidney disease or if you are elderly).

That's why I supplement with Magnesium Ascorbate. I know I need the vitamin C of the ascorbate and the magnesium is also great if you have heart disease.

Bone tissue is a mineralized connective tissue. It is formed by cells, called osteoblasts, that deposit a matrix of Type-I collagen and also release calcium, magnesium, and phosphate ions that ultimately combine chemically within the collagenous matrix to form a crystalline mineral, known as bone mineral, in the form of carbonated hydroxyapatite.

IE, Magnesium is part of your bones structure, not just Calcium. Both are needed. Chlorocalciferol is also a necessary catalyst for the bones to absorb calcium. Taking a quick peek at the Periodic Table, one can see that both Magnesium and Calcium are in the same column, so chemically, they have a lot of similarities and an excess of one can cause a deficiency of the other. Now, this is just me coming up with a quick untested hypothesis. I think we all get plenty of calcium, which in excess can prevent absorption of magnesium, thus causing a magnesium deficiency. Now, on the other hand, like you said, if you have too much magnesium, that can also lead to a calcium deficiency. What I think is really missing is the catalyst, Chlorocalciferol, and oddly enough, people in the US are very Chlorocalciferol deficient.
