Indian church leaders protest vigilante killings to protect sacred cows

COCHIN, India (CNS) — The Catholic church in India criticized growing intolerance and mob violence targeting religious minorities over cow protection.
“The vast majority of the people of India of all communities (have) been shocked at the lynching in various states on the pretext of protecting cows,” said a statement issued by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India after a July 16 meeting in New Delhi. About 40 religious leaders — Christians along with Baha’i, Hindu, Muslim and Sikh — attended the meeting.
The statement asked the government “to end (the) impunity … at the root of the atmosphere of fear that stalks the land today.”

Valid points.
Though religious dogmas usually are not supposed to be governed by reason, there has been plenty of butchery by violent Islamists in places like Syria, Benghazi, Iraq etc. But India outisde war torn zones with history of being a pluralistic democratic society has to be judged by a higher standard.
From some analysis in media, it seems this vigilante killings spree is a product of calculated campaigns to cultivate religious extremism for political purposes.

Probably just coincidence but ever since Modi has returned from historic visit to the only non-racist democracy in mideast , his political troubles seems to be getting worse.

In its ruling, the court had said that the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, popularly known as the SC/ST Act, had been "misused" in the past.
Caste violence continues to be a problem in the country. More than 40,000 crimes against lower castes were reported in 2016 alone, according to official statistics.
