California to list glyphosate as cancer-causing; Monsanto vows fight

Glyphosate, an herbicide and the active ingredient in Monsanto Co's popular Roundup weed killer, will be added to California's list of chemicals known to cause cancer effective July 7, the state's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) said on Monday.

Monsanto vowed to continue its legal fight against the designation, required under a state law known as Proposition 65, and called the decision "unwarranted on the basis of science and the law."

The listing is the latest legal setback for the seeds and chemicals company, which has faced increasing litigation over glyphosate since the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer said that it is "probably carcinogenic" in a controversial ruling in 2015.

Dicamba, a weed killer designed for use with Monsanto's next generation of biotech crops, is under scrutiny in Arkansas after the state's plant board voted last week to ban the chemical.

OEHHA said the designation of glyphosate under Proposition 65 will proceed following an unsuccessful attempt by Monsanto to block the listing in trial court and after requests for stay were denied by a state appellate court and the California's Supreme Court.

Monsanto's appeal of the trial court's ruling is pending.

"This is not the final step in the process, and it has no bearing on the merits of the case. We will continue to aggressively challenge this improper decision," Scott Partridge, Monsanto's vice president of global strategy, said.

Listing glyphosate as a known carcinogen under California's Proposition 65 would require companies selling the chemical in the state to add warning labels to packaging. Warnings would also be required if glyphosate is being sprayed at levels deemed unsafe by regulators.

I do not use Roundup because it is too expensive , but from what I have seen it does not harm rodent populations at all . I will have to check the label on what I use to trim with around the house . Would not the more generic brands have the same in it ?

Yes. It's been off-patent for a long time now. Note that while the glyphosate is off-patent the inert ingredients probably vary from product to product.

If they all have the same stuff someone will have to turn out something new for crop farmers in Caly , I guess .

Ha. "Science" You say it as if it's merely a word without meaning to be offered as fodder for public consumption. Do you think that philosophical materialism is the explanatory paradigm into which all "science" must fit or conform? It isn't and it shouldn't be.

In science there are no truths. In other words, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence either way. The very nature of science demands that we always ask questions. Always. There are no absolutes. That's "science."

Even this small step has been a long time coming.

GMO seed was developed to be resistant to Roundup application, hence more poison can now be applied directly to your food... pretty straight forward I'd say. The food is poisoned, soil is stripped of nutrients & Monsanto profits while they fight every effort to keep the consumer informed thru GMO labeling. This is not the way to grow food.... enjoy your Cheerios.

Well at least they are not worried about 2,4-D. 2,4-D smells like Vietnam.

Ever since I weedeated 2 baby rabbits, I've been using glyphosate. I still can't get that image out of my mind. I tried the enviro stuff but it didn't even phase the weeds. I only use it a couple times a year and take a shower when I'm done. I'm open to suggestions.

Dunno about you folks but I'd never eat anything related in any way to a company run by a guy that looks like this:

"We have set them on the hobby-horse of an idea about the absorption of individuality by the symbolic unit of COLLECTIVISM. They have never yet and they never will have the sense to reflect that this hobby-horse is a manifest violation of the most important law of nature, which has established from the very creation of the world one unit unlike another and precisely for the purpose of instituting individuality."- A Quote From Some Old Book

Will our wheat, our bread, be tested for glyphosate, and will the wheats and breads with glyphosate in them be taken off the market?

I don't really care that much about what the label on the poison says. I'm not buying the poison. What I want to make sure of is that I'm not ingesting something poisonous that isn't on the flour label or on the bread label.
