Id go off of what my parents said, but pretty much for them when we went off the Gold Standard and they started seeing the price of everything go up twice as much as wages. By the time I was born, we were already on the downhill slide.

    Worse in what way?

There many aspects of modern life I rather enjoy. I'm glad I don't have to carry water from a well, wash clothes on a washboard, and pop out one baby after another until my ovaries shrivel up.

On a personal level, mine got immensely worse after my son's accident. Still haven't recovered and not sure I ever will. As for society, I'm guessing we can go pretty far back as we have always been our own worst enemy.

Despite all of this the life under Clinton looked like a party compared to what we have now.

When did life start getting worse?

Trick question. Implies it was good to begin with.

Assuming we're talking about the US and Europe, living standards aren't getting worse, they're just improving at a lower rate.

Continuing on this political track, though, they will stagnate and turn negative.

The origins of that political track could be located at different times, depending on how many causal steps back you want to go.

Probably the best, long term explanation begins in 1789, as the origin of modern democracy.

We may need a poll for this.

The decline of America? I think it was a series of events, the sabotage of Perot's 1992 campaign by the Bushes being one of them.

After Clinton won, the focus of the federal government went to shoring up urban centers. This caused a decline in rural America. In the Midwest and other areas, post offices began closing, banks abandoned small towns in favor of bigger cities, and people began to have to move to larger communities. Although the closure of post offices and schools predates Clinton, the process was accelerated by the federal government spending billions on rebuilding inner cities and focusing on grants to cities for urban renewal. And Clinton's support of NAFTA sent manufacturing jobs overseas.

The Gulf War proved the administration could lie and the media would stand idly by, or even support those lies. The manipulation of the news media, and the American public, was complete.

The events of September 11, 2001, and the subsequent federal grab for power, including airline frisking and strip searches, NSA spying, and other intrusions, damaged American freedom. Then George W. Bush's lie about "weapons of mass destruction" went unquestioned by the media, and we spent trillions invading Iraq and Afghanistan. We've never left, and the money that could have been used to fix problems here in America ended up being monumentally wasted overseas in an endless "War on Terror" that can't ever be won.

Probably the reigns of the Clinton and Bush crime families did more to damage America than anything else. But I'd say the Reagan administration's focus on the "greed is good" and "trickle down economics" philosophies, as well as the secret overseas coups, also damaged America morally.

One thing you can do to immediately to increase your happiness is TURN OFF THE NEWS.

It's always been getting worse. We have a natural tendency to look back fondly on the past, remembering things to be better than they actually were. I'd guess that even thousands of years ago adults were saying that things had gone downhill from when they were kids.

    False choice set.

Just because "polio vaccine" does not mean "police state" must follow.

Life has always been a combination of good and bad. You get to choose which of those you focus on. The "Good Old Days" weren't really that great either.
