Not true. I work with, among others, suicidal kids (also adults and non-suicidal kids and adults), and asking if so-and-so is having suicidal thoughts is SOP.

Even after that he gave me a negrep calling me a "dip$#@!" about it. He might have reading compensation issues, but considering how belligerent he's being, and what he said to Willy, there's a more likely cause.

OMG did I pass into the twilight zone??? For the first time in my many years here I gave out more neg rep than perhaps my entire time here (3). I can't believe how heartless and petty people here on this subject. Does anyone know that in the 60's child porn could be purchased in an adult book store? I'm certainly not saying that child porn is a good thing, it's certainly not in that it harms those who are photographed. If you look at the REAL definition of "pedophile" and compare that to the distorted definition we have today you will find that few who are labeled "pedophile" actually fit the real definition (hint - prepubescent). I remember a time when there was no such thing as a sex registry and incidents like this were handled without police involvement. Teens might have been shamed. But, no stigma was attached for the remainder of life involving every aspect of their life.
I do not really understand this modern concept that dumb kids 18- are adults and adults 18+ are just kids into their 20's.

Absolutely right!! NO "punishment" should last for the entire life of someone unless that person has taken another life... That's the ONLY exception that logically exists...

I figured this was as good a time as any to refresh with the spawn what he is supposed to say if a cop ever asks him any questions other than "how are you" or says "hi".

I think the overwhelming problem from this incident is that the cop should have NEVER been left alone to interrogate, interview, scare or harass the boy. Especially if the kid had or was about to incriminate himself. They should have been separated until the parents showed up at the very minimum.

No, he is not. At worst, he was a dumb teenager who made a mistake and we don't even know if the girl was okay with him recording it. The article only says her friend was mad about it.

He was not mature enough to have sex. He continued to demonstrate his immaturity after that. If he thought he was adult enough to have sex, he was sure adult enough to bear the consequences of his own actions, including being interrogated by police without his parents present. He confessed to parents after the fact and did not include them in his decision to have sex and record it.

Few of us were.

Nobody mentions the poor girl whose mistake was broadcast all over the school.

According to your logic, she had it coming because she wasn't mature enough to pick a partner with some sense.

And I am sorry for the family's loss. I have parented a child through to adulthood, and while I have many regrets about my parenting mistakes, I do not have the audacity to think I am a victim of her mistakes, and she would also not consider herself to be a victim of her own mistakes. We bear the responsibility for our own mistakes, end of story.

I've made lots of mistakes and I own every one of them but threatening a kid with sex offender status over CONSENSUAL sex is too far. He recorded it and shared it - which was stupid but we don't know if the girl was okay with the recording or the sharing. Her friend wasn't but that's neither here nor there. Her friend wasn't the victim.

After the kid killed himself the cops claimed they were just trying to scare him. I don't believe them. You cool with that kid going to jail and being labeled a sex offender for the rest of his life over this? I'm not.

My nephew did something dumb last year and his life was almost ruined over it. Thank God, you weren't the judge.

I cannot believe people on a so-called libertarian forum are loathe to consider responsibility part of the equation.

BTW, folks this why you drill it into your kids head that the only thing they should say to a cop is call my mom (or dad). It's perfectly legal for them to question your kid without you or a lawyer and your kid should also understand the cops will lie to get them to confess.
