Manchester suicide attack lays bare limits of security measures

    http://www.reuters.com/article/us-br...KBN18J0N5?il=0

By Kaori Kaneko and John Irish | TOKYO/PARIS

Countries across the world will tighten security ahead of major cultural and sports events after a suicide bombing in Britain that killed at least 22 people, but experts say reinforced measures will do little to prevent determined individuals.

Given the target being a Manchester pop concert, the latest attack to hit Europe had echoes of the coordinated attacks in November 2015 by Islamist militants on the Bataclan concert hall and France's national soccer stadium that killed 130 people.

Since those attacks, France has been in a state of emergency and seen thousands of soldiers patrolling its streets alongside police to protect tourist sites, government buildings and events.

That has not stopped a raft of attacks in the country, such as the truck attack in Nice on Bastille Day last July, by "lone-wolf" assailants who did not use a network of fellow militants -- all lessening the risk of alerting security agencies.

"Whatever is done - and in this case it's British intelligence which is considered among the best in the world - it won't prevent such incidents happening," said Jean-Charles Brisard, president of the Centre for the Analysis of Terrorism.

"You can bring back the perimeter, add security gates and as many controls as you want, but that will not change the fact that a determined individual will carry out his act if he is not caught before."

After a meeting with security and intelligence chiefs, Prime Minister Theresa May said police believed they knew the identity of the bomber. The attack was claimed by Islamic State.

London's mayor said there would be more police on the streets of the capital after the attack at the end of a concert by U.S. singer Ariana Grande in Manchester, 200 miles (320 km)north of London.

Officials in several other countries on Tuesday also sought to reassure their citizens following Monday's attack.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security warned that the U.S. public may experience increased security at public events.

Hong Kong's AsiaWorld Expo, where Grande is due to hold a concert in September, said it would improve security at all concerts and events. Besides baggage inspection, there would also be metal detectors and search dogs, it said in a statement.

SM investments Corp, whose Mall of Asia Arena in the Philippine capital will host Grande in August, said it would take all precautions. "Our security is always stepped up especially for big crowds like this," said SM investment relations chief Corazon Guidote.

Sports events organizers were also looking into security. European soccer body UEFA said there was "no specific intelligence" to suggest that Wednesday's Europa League final in Stockholm between Manchester United and Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam might be the target of any attack.

The International Cricket Council said security for the ICC Champions Trophy next month in Britain was its "highest priority".

    GENERATION OF TERRORISM

France's Interior Ministry said on Tuesday it would send a list of measures to police to reinforce security, although officials said there was nothing especially new being proposed.

"There are plenty of measures already in place including by increasing private security contributions, but everyone has to simply remain vigilant," said Sebastien Pietrasanta, a French Socialist lawmaker and terrorism expert.

"I think we have to accept that we'll be fighting terrorism for a generation."

Speaking on RTL radio, Thierry Teodori, who runs a large concert hall in the southern French city of Lyon that was due to host a Grande concert in June, echoed those comments.

He said venues in France had already substantially beefed up ways of controlling crowds, searches and monitoring queues as well as increasing manpower.

"With every tragedy there is a new scenario. We have to train personnel to be as effective as possible and anticipate all eventualities, but that's inside the perimeter," he said.

"Outside the perimeter, it's up to security forces and the state to ensure security because we don't have the legitimacy to do that."

In Singapore, the organizer of Britney Spears' concerts in June said they were considering new measures.

"All our events are licensed by the police. It is normally advised by the licensing department on what precautions to take, how many armed guards we need. So we work closely with them," said Yogesh Mehta, project manager at IME Entertainment Group.

Singapore, which hosts a security summit between June 2-4 bringing together Asia-Pacific defense and military chiefs, made amendments to the Public Order Act last month.

It requires event organizers to notify the police a month beforehand if they expect more than 5,000 people to attend. And police may refuse to allow a public gathering if it has a direct political end or involves foreigners.

However, as well as a financial cost, enhancing security to such levels in Western countries may prove unpopular given they could curb on people's existing way of life, experts said.

"It's a problem of means, but also a political choice," said Brisard. "You have to continue living your life despite the attacks and not enter into the terrorists' game.

"They want you to change your system so that our society is entirely dependent on a security plan," he said.

Let's not kid ourselves. Option A is what is happening, and what will continue to happen, for these reasons:

    - It is happening because to the elite, this is nothing but acceptable collateral damage. A nuisance, but one that ultimately works to their advantage, giving them more power.

    - It is the globalism agenda, which is the agenda of the elite, and also the agenda of a good portion of the population who believe it is to their advantage in one way or another.

    - Importing people provides cheap labor.

    - It generally increases the number of big government socialist voters.

    - The undeclared, half-wars will continue because it is the agenda of the elite and other related special interests.

The venue has a connection to the train station. That common area is where parents arranged to meet the kids as they came out of the venue. That is also where the bomb went off.

They were using the t-shirts that were for sale by the vendors in the area as bandages and tourniquets.

Portrait emerges of Salman Abedi, suspected Manchester bomber

The frantic search for clues about Salman Abedi, the suspected Manchester Arena bomber, and his possible connections to ISIS is underway.

Police say they conducted a pair of raids on Tuesday, one in the Whalley Range neighborhood, in which they scoured the suspect’s home, the other in nearby Fallowfield, which police said included a “controlled explosion to enable safe entry.” Authorities also took one man, identified by neighbors as the bomber’s older brother, into custody outside a local grocery store.

The portrait emerging of the alleged bomber, who is believed to have detonated an improvised explosive device that killed him and 22 people and injured more than 50 others outside an Ariana Grande concert on Monday night, is one of a potentially disaffected young man who grew up in an area identified as a hotbed for jihadi recruitment.

Abedi, 22, was described as the son of a family who emigrated from Libya and, according to Robin Simcox, a terrorism and national security analyst at The Heritage Foundation, one of the hundreds of young men known to British counterterrorism authorities as potential threat.

“Abedi was a terrorist suspect in the UK, MI5 were aware of him,” Simcox told ABC News. “They were aware that he posed a potential threat but they didn’t think he posed an imminent threat that he proved himself to do in Manchester.”

In recent years, Abedi took business classes at the University of Salford in Manchester, where he registered for classes this year, a university spokesperson told ABC News, but hasn’t attended any classes and was not well-known socially.

A senior counterterrorism official told ABC that one reason Abedi may have dropped out of college is because he recently travelled outside the United Kingdom to Libya and possibly other countries, "it seems, to get some skills,” though Syria did not appear to be one of his destinations.

Abedi, the official said, was on the radar of British security officials but time ran out on the surveillance clock without Abedi doing anything nefarious, so authorities apparently moved on. It is unknown, the official added, whether Abedi made his own suicide vest or if he had help.

Mohammed Saeed, the imam of the local Didsbury Mosque and Islamic Centre, where Abedi sometimes worshipped, told ABC News that Abedi became angry with him after he gave a sermon in 2015 in which he criticized ISIS.

"He was showing me hate, he hated me basically," Saeed said. "I was shocked, shocked and angry. All innocent lives matter.”

The neighborhood, around an area called Moss Side, just a few miles from the concert hall, is considered by police to be a hot bed of ISIS recruitment, according to Dr. Alexander Meleagrou-Hitchens, the research director of the program on extremism at The George Washington University.

“Moss Side is very well known,” Hitchens told ABC News. “A lot of people with petty criminal pasts, involvement in gangs, getting involved instead with ISIS later on.”

    Muslims Are the True Feminists

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/gabby-...b_9877692.html

    By Gabby Aossey

As American women, many of us have an idea of what feminists are; freelancing women with all the sexual freedom in the world. But this is exactly the problem with American feminism; it is all about sex and the liberation of our bodies. Certainly, things like abortion and contraception is a part of that freedom, but in today’s society the fight has taken on a much different tone.

Hip Feminist campaigns like Free the Nipple only encourage a gullible behavior of disrespect for our own bodies, leading to everyone else around us disrespecting our bodies as well. If we want to be respected as women and taken seriously in all our endeavors we should look to a new source; Muslim women. Muslim women, as well as Muslim men, see every body as a sacred temple, especially the female body. Opposed to exposing themselves, it is through modesty. When we think of modern feminists we should stray away from the new American trends and start looking to what we have always thought as a contradiction; Muslim feminists.

Contrary to American popular belief, Islam has a culture and history of women empowerment. In the Qur’an, which is believed to be God’s word told to Prophet Muhammad, women and men are described as equals in everyday actions and responsibilities. When it comes to family, charity, children, sex, and much more, a man and a woman have the same duties and that is to continue on the straight path.

Early Islamic women kept this idea alive. The first Muslim woman was Khadija, Mohammed’s first wife. Without her influence, Islam might not have emerged as successfully as it did. Khadija was a business woman and a land owner in the lands of Arabia. When Mohammed was given revelations, it was Khadija that ensured him that he was not going insane, but that he was a chosen one. It was Khadija that pushed Mohammed to listen to God and the angels that were trying to communicate with him and to not run in fear. It was Khadija that gave Muhammad the support and confidence in his development as becoming God’s last prophet. Khadija, a woman, was the strength that allowed Islam to fully bloom. Just this one example gives us a view on how true Muslim women are; outspoken, driven, certain and courageous, the epitome of a feminist.

So it’s no surprise to see Muslim woman today modeling themselves after these prominent female figures. Muslim girls look towards these instances of strength for guidance in this scary, patriarchal society. These modern women are not afraid to go against the grain in the name of their belief like wearing the hijab to covey their religious devotion. Hijab is the headscarf that is worn by Muslim woman and no; it is not supposed to be forced on them by their fathers and husbands. Wearing or not wearing the Hijab reflects a Muslim woman’s own a personal choice.

For me, this idea especially showcases feminism in America. With all of the pressures in our American society to have a certain physical allure; to have long, luscious hair, a skinny yet curvy body, flawless facial beauty, woman go through hell. With this, we succumb to the pressures that we generally think we are free of; we oppress our natural womanhood with constant worry about how we look to others around us. We do not have the courage to stand up to this societal critique and say ‘my body is not to be ogled at’.

For many Muslim women however, they strive to achieve just that. In this way, they liberate themselves from these everyday pressures. They actually have the courage to say hey, I am not an object of pleasure, I am a woman that commands only respect for who I am and not how I look. They have the power to self-liberate as well as the courage to diverge from the American norms. And they do not get attention from showing off their figure, but they get attention by how they present themselves. Muslim woman get respect and are looked at beyond aesthetics; they are actually taken seriously in their communities.

Isn’t this what feminism should be? Don’t women deserve consistent respect and to actually be listened to without drools or criticisms over our bodies and looks? I believe the answer is yes. In the Muslim-American community, and even in parts of the greater Muslim world, modest woman, whether they wear hijab or not, are respected and called upon, despite what our mainstream media feeds to us.

A few weeks ago I went to a lecture about feminism- in Islam. That is what got all these thoughts stirring in my head once again. The lecturer was a Muslim woman in hijab; she spoke so passionately that every person in the room, guy and girl, had no choice but to immerse themselves in her words. After a quick hour and a half, I could not help but think about all our Free the Nipple group representing a trendy feminism and how some trends need to die. I realized we have been conditioned to think that American women are the free and that Muslim women are the suppressed, but this is twisted to me. I finally understood who is really oppressed by a patriarchal society and it is us. Woman who wear hijab have freed themselves from a man’s and a society’s judgmental gaze; the Free the Nipplers have not. They have fallen deep into the man’s world, believing that this trend will garner respect.

So I urge my Free the Nipple gal pals to take a look at your Muslim sisters and collaborate with them to create a feminism that treats the female body as a temple and not as a toy. Let us see feminism in a different light—through modesty and the courage to savor our sugar. Let us call on the Muslim feminists of the world.

Part of his recent "raising/growing up" apparently happened in Libya/Syria regime change regions:

"The man British police say blew himself up as a packed concert was letting out in Manchester, England, Monday night is believed to have traveled to Syria and had "proven" links with the Islamic State terror network.

It also was reported the attacker had recently returned to the U.K. from Libya days before the attack, according to his friends.
Detectives who have viewed closed-circuit TV footage tell the paper that Abedi placed an explosive-laden suitcase on the ground in the foyer of Manchester Arena at around 10:30 p.m., as a concert by pop star Ariana Grande was ending. Moments later, the bomb exploded, killing at least 22 people and injuring nearly 120 others."

It's comforting to know that the government is reading all of our internet communications to keep us safe. It really prevents terrorism.

They may have prevented this. If he had just flown a Nazi flag instead of an ISIS flag, then he would have been imprisoned.

Abedi was not well-known by neighbours in the tight-knit Fallowfield community in Manchester, but some noticed he had grown a beard and started to wear religious dress in recent months.

A person who said they knew Abedi from school told the Manchester Evening News: “He was a outgoing fun guy but since he went to Libya in 2011 he came back a different guy.

“He used to drink, smoke weed then all of a sudden he turned religious and I’ve not seen him since 2012.”

Other clues pointing to radicalisation include the appearance of a black flag associated with Islamist groups on Abedi’s house in Elsmore road.

“There was a black flag with Arabic writing on it on the roof for a bit, a few years ago,” a neighbour told the BBC.

Now you're saying those who supported him were fools? Some surely were. But the smartest supported Trump as a voice for what they wanted (no war with Russia, no more regime change, no more illegal immigration) and not because they are fooled into thinking that the president has real power.
    BOLOGNA

People want to change the narrative now that Trump is proven a milquetoast bootlicker.

The supposed "smart people" (amongst the Trump supporters) supported him because he was an alpha male winner, who wasn't going to take no crap from nobody gosh darn it! His big penis-like hotels and hot wife and say-what-he-wants attitude were outward evidence that he will bring true power back to the White House!

Paul was the principled candidate. Now that Trump has been shown a weak person people want to change the narrative that Trump was attractive for his principled stances and statesmanship and he's a victim of the deep state.

    Cry me an f'in river.

The Trump Trumpists loved was shown to be a thin-skinned coward, and now they want to re-write history at his eulogy to save face for supporting him.
