Cool 2nd NH Rep. Switches to the Libertarian Party This Year

Today the New Hampshire House Libertarian Party Minority Caucus held a press conference to announce that Representative Joseph Stallcop of Keene switched his party registration from Democratic to Libertarian. Representative Stallcop joins Representative Caleb Dyer as the second Libertarian Party legislator in the “Live Free or Die” State House.

Representative Dyer switched to Libertarian earlier in the year, after the Party gained official ballot status due to the Honorable Max Abramson receiving four percent of the vote in his November bid to become the governor of New Hampshire as a Libertarian. The only other Libertarian Party legislator in the entire nation is Nebraska State Senator Laura Ebke. Like the Honorable Abramson and Representative Dyer of New Hampshire, Senator Ebke was originally elected as a Republican. On the other hand, Representative Stallcop has the honor of being the second Libertarian Party legislator in the nation to originally get elected as a Democrat.

Representative Stallcop is the third Democratic legislator and forth overall to switch parties this year in New Hampshire. As was mentioned previously, Representative Dyer switched from the Republican Party to become a Libertarian. Two other New Hampshire Democrats abandoned the Democratic Party for the Republican Party. Rumors have been widely circulating for weeks that additional New Hampshire Democrats are considering abandoning the Party as Democrats are very upset with their state leadership.

Representative Stallcop said “while my time in Concord reinforced the ineptitude that can exist by those in charge. I originally joined the Democratic Party in hopes of making a difference through critical thinking and my classical liberal viewpoint, yet with the lack of unbiased data in caucuses as well as backlash on votes I’ve independently made, it seems there is no longer a place for me here. With a high regard for individuals personally working in their communities to implement positive change, I hereby transfer to the Libertarian Party.”

Libertarian Party New Hampshire Chairman Darryl W. Perry added “today marks only the second time in the 45 year history of the Libertarian Party that a sitting state representative has left the Democratic Party for the Libertarian Party… Today also marks the first time in nearly 2 decades that the New Hampshire General Court will have a Libertarian Caucus!”

Originally formed in 1992, the New Hampshire House Libertarian Minority Caucus had four members: Calvin Warburton, Andy Borsa, Don Gorman, and Finlay Rothhaus. The officially recognized Libertarian Caucus named Gorman as the Libertarian Floor Leader.

Congratulations Representative Stallcop on following the advice of famed New Hampshire poet Robert Frost and taking the road not taken.

The news is spreading. New Hampshire Democrat Ian Freeman blogged about the story,

Keene Democrat State Rep. Joseph Stallcop Flips to Libertarian, Making History!
    by Ian | May 11, 2017
    http://freekeene.com/2017/05/11/keen...aking-history/

In February of this year, republican state representative from Pelham, Caleb Dyer became the only sitting state rep in the United States to join the Libertarian Party. Now, just three months later, New Hampshire is making libertarian political history again as Keene democrat representing Ward One, Joseph Stallcop, today announced at a press conference at Concord’s state house, that he is also flipping to Libertarian! Here’s the full press conference video:
Not only does New Hampshire now have more sitting state reps than the other 49 states combined, but Dyer and Stallcop, both 21 years old, are forming what is likely the youngest political caucus in the history of the United States.

Now that state reps from both parties have openly defected to the libertarians, the big question is which state rep will be next? Will the courage of these two young men inspire the other libertarian reps who are still operating as republicans and democrats to “come out”? Former state reps Eric Eastman and Joe Lachance also recently revealed they have flipped from republican to join the Libertarian Party of New Hampshire.

Rep. Stallcop joining the Libertarian Party is also historic as he is the second sitting democrat state representative to have ever done so in the 45-year history of the national party.

New Hampshire, of course, also holds the distinction of having the first-ever democrat state rep to have flipped, when prior to the 2000 election, late state representative Steve Vaillancourt joined the party as a sitting democratic state rep and then ran for re-election in 2000 as a libertarian and won! This fact contradicts those naysayers in the liberty movement who have been claiming it’s impossible for libertarians who make the flip to actually win re-election. What they are saying is impossible has already been proven possible by New Hampshire’s own political history! In addition to Vaillancourt, in the nineties New Hampshire had multiple libertarian state reps who also won re-election.

At this morning’s press conference, Stallcop gave an excellent speech that revealed the command-and-control structure in the NH democratic party, which echoed Dyer’s experience in the republican party. Thinking for one’s self when in the major parties is apparently discouraged and voting his conscience resulted in his democratic colleagues lying to and looking down on him. One was overheard saying of him, “Maybe we shouldn’t have college students doing this job.”

He called out the democrats’ hypocrisy, saying, “they claim to be against casinos for fear of addiction, yet ignore the lottery’s grasp on the poor. They claim to be for criminal justice, though many turned away from a bill that would close the asset forfeiture loophole. They claim to be for the protection of transgender rights, yet didn’t even mark that bill as a caucus priority.”

The hell? That's about the last switch path I'd have anticipated. Someone spike his coffee with acid? It's about the only explanation that makes sense.

If true, I would be interested in knowing why.

If he means it in the way I understand, I cannot for the life of me see what would have lead him to go Democrat. They are the polar opposites of classical liberals.

I'd still like to know why. What's his thought process on this? It's not enough that he switched. The reasons for it are key.

"The fact is that the average man's love of liberty is nine-tenths imaginary, exactly like his love of sense, justice and truth. Liberty is not a thing for the great masses of men. It is the exclusive possession of a small and disreputable minority, like knowledge, courage and honor. It takes a special sort of man to understand and enjoy liberty - and he is usually an outlaw in democratic societies."

"Copkiller" would have been world's better.

Liberty Democrats do get elected to the legislature in this nation, but only the New Hampshire House. It has been happening every election since 2006, but again, only in New Hampshire While the average Democrat wants to legalize cannabis, the leaders of the Democratic Party in NH oppose it. He likely is a lot more liberal than the leadership of his old state Party on social liberty issues.

If he means it in the way I understand, I cannot for the life of me see what would have lead him to go Democrat. They are the polar opposites of classical liberals.
He was elected in a district where almost all of the registered voters are college students. It is the 2nd most Democratic leaning district in the state of New Hampshire. Getting elected, his only option was to run as a Democrat. I watched the press conference and read the press release. From what I can tell, he appears to be a Gary Johnson/ Bill Weld type socially liberal, fiscally sane type Libertarian Party person. That's better than most Democrats, but he might not be as good as the liberty Democrats serving in the NH House. We will have to watch how his voting record changes now that he is "allowed" to vote the way he wants without being yelled by the leadership of his Party.

He just created a Facebook page, in case you want to donate or interact with him.

Good for him! That's awesome. Last year, when Laura Ebke made the switch, I suspected more representatives would make the switch as well. I'm glad to see this is happening. Let's hope their local constituents support them. We need more people taking a stand against the two-party mafia.
