Wandering Security Robots Take Over America

by Charlie Nash 26 Apr 2017

A wave of wandering security robots has started to replace traditional security guards around the United States, with a number of the robots soon to be placed in malls around New York.

“The firm Knightscope plans to roll out the rent-a-cop on wheels at shopping centers, college campuses and sports arenas in 16 cities, including ones in the Empire State, by the end of the year,” reported The New York Post on Tuesday. “The five-foot-tall R2D2-style automatons weigh 300 pounds, come equipped with multiple sensors and a 360-degree cameras along with license plate recognition technology.”

Knightscope’s co-founder and former police officer, Stacy Dean Stephens, claimed that the robots could be used to potentially save lives.

“We think that given the real-time information that we are gathering as well as historical information, it is very plausible that we can make an impact on crime and a positive impact on the economy,” said Stephens. “When the shootings took place in Sandy Hook, there were a lot of studies done on active shooting situations and one of those studies found that if we got one of those officers in that school 60 seconds sooner, we could have saved as many as 12 lives.”

“We wanted to figure out how you solve that problem and the only way to solve that problem is through actionable intelligence and the only way to get that form of intelligence is through eyes and ears,” he continued, adding that there were already over 1,000 investors interested in the product.

Some, however, are not as optimistic about the new robots, which can be hired at around $7 an hour via a subscription model, and come in both an indoor and outdoor formats.

“Shoppers like to interact with people and socialize. People come over to me and tell me how nice I am. Robots aren’t comforting. Can the robot find a lost child?” said one security guard based in New York. “[If they get popular], I won’t have a job.”

(You won't have a life pal. - AF)

A drunk San Francisco man was even arrested after he knocked over one of the robots.

“41-year-old Jason Sylvain, approached the K5 while it was patrolling a parking lot. He toppled it over (out of spite or curiosity? We don’t know), inflicting a number of scratches on the bot,” reported the Verge on Wednesday. “The K5 is now back on patrol, while Sylvain has been arrested for ‘prowling and public intoxication.'”

Last year, one of the earlier model robots also ran over a toddler.

“The robot hit my son’s head and he fell down facing down on the floor and the robot did not stop and it kept moving forward,” said the child’s mother in July. “He was crying like crazy and he never cries. He seldom cries.”

Since the incident, the robot has now advanced, and Knightscope reportedly plans to add features such as gun detection, an array of 16 microphones, and IBM Watson integration.

That jumped out at me as well: gun detection?

Do they really mean these $#@! devices are going to be body scanning you, like mobile TSA porno scanners, and calling the cops to SWAT you when it detects your legally carried weapon?

The first widespread use of "in your face" robots was always going to be sock puppets for drone operators in the MIC.

I've said this numerous times on here over the years.

It's the most obvious use case that requires the least amount of programming, and saves the most amount of money.

I don't think it'll change much really. Just have to slightly alter excuse for why it shot your dog.

Knocking one over got Jason Sylvain in trouble.

Sadly, I see the day when these things are given those crazy funerals when one is destroyed in the line of duty. Just shoot me when that day comes - if a robocop doesn't get me first.

They paid for RoboCop — but got Bender.

The operators of La Guardia Airport are paying thousands of dollars every month renting a security robot to patrol the airport — but the bot is creeping out women while the crooks look on and laugh.

“It’s upsetting to have that thing creep up on you,” said one female security guard at the airport, adding that she had just fended it off with a luggage cart.

“It’s a pain in the ass. It keeps bothering people.”

The airport deployed the R2-D2-esque Knightscope K5 three months ago to roll around outside Terminal B, recording everything with its four cameras, microphones and sensors.

LaGuardia Gateway Partners, which operates the terminal, wouldn’t say how much it’s paying for the blue-and-white machines, but Knightscope says it typically rents the droids out for between $6,500 and $8,300 a month.

Human guards at the airport say it’s supposed to thwart the scammers and illegal cabdrivers who plague the parking lot — but is more WALL-E than T-1000.

“They just laugh at it. They walk around the bot and take people into their cars. It’s a waste of money,” said one high-level security specialist at the airport.

“They could have renovated three of our bathrooms for the same money. We could have gotten some working sinks.”

    Even the hustlers agree.

“I didn’t even notice it. I thought it was sales,” said an illicit cabdriver named Mohammad.

But the Dalek-style droid does appear to spend its day sniffing around workers and travelers.

The aforementioned female guard blamed male colleagues for hijacking the bot to “get a better look” at her.

Several other female passengers said they were irked when the machine rolled up and ogled them Thursday.

“It was coming right up to me, and at first, I was like, ‘What the freak is that?’ ” said Kris Cabagnot, 31, after the robot sat 10 inches away from her knee for a minute.

Strangely, when people get close to the K5, it says, “You are in my personal space,” according to workers.

Liberty is lost through complacency and a subservient mindset. When we accept or even welcome automobile checkpoints, random searches, mandatory identification cards, and paramilitary police in our streets, we have lost a vital part of our American heritage. America was born of protest, revolution, and mistrust of government. Subservient societies neither maintain nor deserve freedom for long.

FDNY’s new robot dog makes its first appearance in NYC

The FDNY tested a new robot dog the department will use for search-and-rescue missions — offering a first glimpse of the four-legged firefighter, exclusive footage shows.

Smoke eaters took the $75,000 robo-pooch named Spot — which can sniff out dangerous gases and collect structural safety data — for a walk up the stairs of City Hall on Thursday.

Though the mechanical mutt has less charm than a firehouse Dalmatian, it’s built to gauge the integrity of smoldering structures and descend deep underground after a fire or building collapse, the FDNY said.

The department also showcased the bright yellow gadget to Mayor Eric Adams on Thursday, and officers are already being trained on how to use it, according to the fire officials.

The department bought two of the human-controlled robot K9s made by Boston Dynamics — the same firm that leased the NYPD its since-scrapped robot dog last year.

Last year, critics howled that the NYPD’s mechanical pooch was an example of dystopian “surveillance” and overly aggressive policing after footage of the device patrolling a housing complex in the Bronx emerged.

Yes, I saw one of these at a mall years ago and it creeped me out. I imagine the ones now are much more advanced and cando facial recognition too so you know if your wanted you'll be reported. Probably equipped with vaccine status check and Covid reporting if it senses your infected. We're screwed. They have a version that is designed like car/vehicle as well.
