Trump says infrastructure plan could top $1 trillion

President Donald Trump told chief executives of major companies on Tuesday that his administration is working on an infrastructure plan worth $1 trillion or maybe more.

Trump told the audience that he wants to speed up permitting for road and bridge projects and that federal money wouldn’t go to projects that couldn’t be started within three months.

“If you have a job that you can’t start within 90 days, we’re not going to give you the money for it,” he said.

Trump spoke at a “CEO town hall” run by the White House and attended by the heads of companies including JetBlue Airways JBLU, -0.63% , Vornado Realty Trust VNO, +0.77% and MasterCard MA, -0.13% . More than 50 executives attended.

“We’re talking about a very major infrastructure bill of a trillion dollars, perhaps even more,” Trump said.

Trump didn’t detail how the trillion-plus dollars would be funded. At the same event, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said the administration plans to unveil a bill in May. She described the trillion dollars as being spread over 10 years.

The administration is reportedly considering a combination of $100 billion to $200 billion in federal dollars and offering tax credits to private companies. During the campaign, Trump advisers floated a plan of tax credits as an incentive for a trillion dollars in private investment.

The White House is working on infrastructure and tax reform plans, and there has been speculation that the two could be combined. On Tuesday, the Washington Post reported the Trump administration is exploring the creation of two controversial taxes — a value-added tax and a carbon tax — as revenue raisers for tax reform.

Deputy White House Press Secretary Lindsay Walters said in a statement that “as of now, neither a carbon tax nor a VAT are under consideration.” She said Trump’s team is getting input from experts on all sides of the tax reform debate.

“I don’t think that there will be any curtailing of Donald Trump as president,” he said. "He controls the media, he controls the sentiment [and] he controls everybody. He’s the one who will resort to executive orders more so than [President] Obama ever used them." - Ron Paul

And none of that money nor his suggested tax cuts were included in his rough budget proposal released in March. In that, he said his budget would not increase spending because more money for defense would be offset by cuts elsewhere. The infrastructure spending would be about twice what he has asked for in new defense spending ($54 billion there vs $100 billion to $200 billion a year on infrastructure). It also did not include the costs of his wall. Designs are currently being submitted for that with some demo wall sections being set up in San Diego (which already has border walls/ fencing).

Carbon tax? Didn't Trump say global warming was fake and pull down all government references to it from their computer systems? Such a tax would effect energy companies which he has said he wants to reduce taxes and burdens on. A value-added-tax would be basically a national sales tax. Adding new taxes when claiming he wants to simplify the tax system? Hmm. Stay tuned. Also keep in mind that Trump can only propose spending and taxes- Congress has to write and enact all spending/ tax bills and he only gets to sign (or veto) what the put together.

I am on the side of letting Trump do what he wants with the tax receipts and minimal borrowing. So if he wants to use all that money to build muh roads, so be it.. His healhcare bill was actually OK but we all had to let the perfect be the enemy of the good and now we are stuck with Obamacare.

Charlie Gasparino talked about this today, says this initiative is the brainchild of Michael Cohen (lifelong hardcore Democrat) and Jared Kushner.

Wiring a nice brand new building seems like a nice gig. Small, dirty crawl spaces under and above old houses, not so much.
