Paul Ryan must go. And thank you Rand Paul.

    Rand Paul is right!

the wall will get built without Ryan

Rand, just write a bill and repeal Obamacare.....period. It ends on Jul 1, 2018. Then the Democrats come on board or they get nothing.

The repeal bill had already passed in the House. Obama said he would not sign it. It is still valid.

I'm just noticing Rand seems to be adopting the Trump, um, makeup. He is highlighted around his eyes. Not sure how I feel about that. Fox lighting seems to be friendly this time.

I appreciate what Rand is saying about agreement on repeal, not so much on the replace. It is too easy to toss the replacement bone in front of Dems and big-gov Republicans. The Freedom Caucus needs to stand firm and maybe show how repealing the law and removing market barriers might make it cheaper overall, and cheaper for government, but still make coverage available through the free market. If they can show the folks determined to hang onto government that free market solutions will provide better coverage at lower rates for government, it would be one of the bigger selling points to repeal.

"Hi, i'm so-and-so, CEO of some insurance company. These are the barriers to affordable coverage: blah, blah, and blabbity blah. Right now it costs $X to provide basic coverage for a healthy 20-something, and $XXX to provide coverage for a middle aged person with diabetes or heart disease. If we could remove regulations having to do with this or that, we could then offer a basic policy to for about 50% of what they pay now. If this or that regulation was also removed, we could reduce that by another 5%. We could then offer some wellness incentives that would bring the cost down even more."

The one good thing about this discussion is that people are now talking about actual dollars and cents. If we could get Congress and insurance professionals to do the same, it would add a dimension to the discussion that is lacking at this time.

But he never took the time to explain to either the public or congressional Republicans what the bill actually did. He did not make a case for the bill's policy merits, preferring instead to describe it using generic superlatives. Contrast that with President Obama, who traveled the country making the case for his health care overhaul, and made a major prime time address outlining its provisions.

Trump, in contrast, was, by virtually all accounts, indifferent to the policy content of the bill so long as it passed and he could say that he had fulfilled his promise to repeal and replace Obamacare.

    ...

This is the danger of a president who is so disinterested in policy particulars, especially when, like Trump, he expects to maintain a central role in the process. Trump's character—his personal style and his habits of mind—prevent him from effectively negotiating complex legislation. And in this case, it meant that even with control of the White House and both chambers of Congress, Republicans couldn't put together an Obamacare repeal bill that could pass, or was worth passing. It's a problem that is likely to continue to haunt conservative policy goals for as long as Trump is president.

Trump didn't care about the details. But health policy is all details. And it turns out it's hard to make a policy deal when you don't understand the policy.
BTW, that stuff about Rand Paul handing out copies of Art of the Deal was golden. There's a fine line between trolling and making a point, and I love it when he walks that line.

Partisan politics, misleading or emotional bill titles, and 4D chess theories are manifestations of the same lie—that the text of the Constitution, the text of legislation, and plain facts do not matter; what matters is what you want to believe. From this comes hypocrisy. And where hypocrisy thrives, virtue recedes. Without virtue, liberty dies. - Justin Amash, March 2018
