A good cause in Texas - Arrested for recording a public meeting

On March 22, 2017, Amy attended an open meeting / hearing of the State Affairs Committee, and streamed the proceedings with her phone. The Chair, Representative Byron Cook, ordered her to stop. She declined, and he had her removed and arrested. She was taken to Travis County Jail and ultimately charged with Criminal Trespass and Resisting Arrest. The Resisting charge was rejected by the Magistrate for lack of probable cause, but the Trespass charge remains.

State officials have scrambled to provide a justification for the "media only" recording policy given state law, referencing the Rules of the House and the Committee. However, neither the House nor the Committee have adopted any rule regarding recording that anyone can produce, and the law is clear that attendees are alllowed to record.

Amy needs funds to fight the remaining criminal charge. Additionally, there is interest in pursuing a civil action against the parties responsible for her arrest, given the violation of her rights and state law.

Partisan politics, misleading or emotional bill titles, and 4D chess theories are manifestations of the same lie—that the text of the Constitution, the text of legislation, and plain facts do not matter; what matters is what you want to believe. From this comes hypocrisy. And where hypocrisy thrives, virtue recedes. Without virtue, liberty dies. - Justin Amash, March 2018
