Thread: I cannot believe people do this

    One possible bright spot.

About 2 hours ago I retrieved phone messages. One was from Bibi letting me know what room she was in at Thomas Memorial. She sounded far better than I dared think she would. She must have called while I was on my way home to take care of the dogs. They'd been cooped up perhaps 9 hours and needed to be attended to.

I admit my worry. But I will keep my chin up and be her faithful servant in the hope that the hand and foot routine will aid in her recovery. At this point my only purpose in life is to see her full recovery and to make my triggers a commercial success such that she will need no longer work. She has paid her dues enough for five lives and it is now time for life to be kinder to her. As of today, I no longer care about anything else.

Whatever prayers and good wishes you can spare, now's REALLY the time. I will owe you all.

Thanks. I will continue to keep you all updated.

Missed the thread osan, you have all the belated wishes and prayers I can send. My daughter is going through treatment for ovarian cancer but it's pretty mild compared to this. As a survivor myself I have some idea of the drill. It aint no fun. The best thing she can have right now is you, and the mindset you're bringing. It's all about her and what she doesn't have to worry about. God bless both of you.

I guess the prayers and all must have had some effect because much to my surprise, Bibi looked a lot better than she did yesterday prior to the second surgery. I may be that the non-viable tissue was responsible for her condition. Her BP was too low for pain meds and she said she was OK with fresh wounds. The difference is remarkable.

Thanks for everything. I will continue to keep you informed.

It is amazing how many people have been through this.

I remember about 10-15 years ago listening to some talk on NPR or Pacifica or what have you, some cancer specialist was being interviewed and the thing they said that struck me like a sap in the teeth was that it would soon become our reality to ask not whether we will get cancer in out lifetimes, but how many times. That prediction appears to be slowly coming to reality.

I'm sorry to hear about your girl. My friend Jim Loriega has a niece, Nicole. I first met her ca. Christmas 1980. She was two and a mere wisp of a girl. Nicole was so cute I couldn't stand myself. Well, at 16 she went to the doctor for a routine exam and the next day they cut a grapefruit-sized, aggressively growing malignancy from her abdomen. Fortunately, the cells were well differentiated and the margins clear. IIRC she may have even avoided chemo. She's been clean since. I remember damned near falling of the chair when Jim called and told me about it. She is now grown, a very beautiful and bright young woman, married, and apparently leading a happy life, thank God.

One thing I learned in this is that I would wish this on nobody. Now when I occasionally hear some tail-gunner wishing cancer on another, it gets my attention as it never would have before. I think people who do this in their fits of frustrated anger have no idea what it is they are wishing upon another. I would not wish it even on Obama, and I'd volunteer for the one-man firing squad, were he to be convicted of treason.

Clearly there is something $#@!y afoot.

Of course, the medical establishment people will tell you we're all nuts, everything is coming up unicorn farts and daffodils, move along and mind your own business now.

    Man what a day.

    First the good news.

Bibi is home and feeling a lot better. Those dolts at the hospital have given her no pain meds since yesterday, despite the doc ordering it. I've got her all pilled up with dilaudid and promethazine and she's in the other world. She looks world's better.

The other good news is that Luna (dog) isn't dead. She disappeared yesterday. The stupid hound got herself caught in a leg trap AGAIN. The same trap, too. Neighbor's place is something between 400 and 500 acres and in '15 Luna got herself caught. Luckily I was at the top of our driveway and could hear her barking from nearly a mile away. This time, silence. I was fairly certain she'd died in whatever mischief she'd gotten herself into.

Dunno what possessed me, because I was going to keep going, but I went in, talk to Junior, drove down the long trail to the place I'd found her before, and sure enough, the nitwit of mine was in the same trap, only this time for ca. 18 hours. So $116 later (Bibi is going to have a fit when I tell her), a bottle of Rimadyl (pain) and antibiotics is what I have to show for the day's trouble.

The bad news was that she'd gotten herself caught a second time. Didn't get much sleep, as I tend to worry about things like my very predictable dogs not coming home at night.

Hopefully, this time the surgery is the last and she will be on the rapid mend.

ETA: I just realized how utterly convolutedly this post reads. I ain't changing a word.

    Made perfect sense to me.

Glad to hear everyone's feeling better.

I suspect a nurse was stealing my pain meds when I had my c-section. I had it around 7 pm and woke up several times asking the nurse for pain meds that were never brought to me. Anyway, I asked again the next morning after a shift change and the new nurse listened to my story about not getting meds, looked at my chart, and raised her eyebrows. She came right back with meds and informed me that I was suppose to get them every 4 hours. Then, I overheard (I have excellent hearing) telling someone (I couldn't see them. They were outside my door but the door wasn't all the way closed) about me not getting meds and told them to take a look at my chart. Anyway, when I hear stories like yours, I wonder how many of those meds are stolen.

I'd not considered that possibility, but it's not surprising to think that it might be the case.

It makes sense. A nurse marks down that they gave a patient the meds and pockets them. If they complain, it's someone who's been through a lot and may not be thinking clearly's word against hers/his.

I never checked my itemized bill from the hospital but you might want to see if your wife is billed for the meds she never received.

Bad news - The corrections have not taken and she will have everything cut out of her. This is a nightmare.

On top of that, I have a very sick goat and I just discovered that part of our house has collapsed in the back. It feels like the whole world is falling down around us.

Unlike myself, Bibi is taking it like a trooper. I'm just not that tough.

If you have any more good wishes/prayers...

Ah damn, I had hoped everything was improving after you mentioned she was able to help prepare a meal. Well, we'll just have to get back to work. Prayers given.

Thanks to everyone. Off to hospital in a few to see what the butchers have wrought. At this point I just want my wife back to good health. I don't care much about anything else.

Good lord... I'm sorry for both you and your wife. What a terrible ordeal. Whatever gods may be... bring Osan and his family some much needed good news.

Update: when I got here, I learn that they have damaged Bibi's left eye. If I didn't think I knew better, I would swear we were in the twilight zone.

At this point I have no idea what I am looking at.

Good news, she is eating g and in reasonably good spirits. If I can vet her out of here alive, I think we may be OK.

Keep them crossed and we may get out of this alright yet.

OK, so this Tuesday past I bore witness to something I never again want to see. Bibi had the bandage removed from the site from which the graft was taken on her right thigh.

I watched a someone's immediate sentience withdraw from the world such that I was staring at a lump of flesh and not a human being. It was nearly undistinguishable for the same phenomenon I have witnessed in people with hours or less left to live. This was one of the most impossibly unpleasant things I have ever seen, and there was nothing I could do to help her. There laid the toughest human being I've ever met, in a child-like state of defeat at the hands of an agony I am not quite sure I can comprehend. The good news was that the graft was taking perfectly, but you should see the hole left in her chest. I feel so badly for this good woman whose generosity puts me to shame on an almost daily basis.

We go today to have it changed again. She is dreading the possibilities the doctor says will not be made real. I hope he proves out.

That aside, Bibi is looking much better, though she is skinny as a rail now. I think she has lost ca. 40-50 pounds, leaving her somewhere between 90-100#, if my eyes do not deceive me. I like them thin, but this is looking nearly dangerous and I wish her appetite would come around, but it isn't.

On the way to to doc Tues. she told me she has been in the presence of Death the first three days after surgery and it was clear that is frightened her. She was on the verge of tears in the car, only the fourth time since I've known her to be in such a state. I don't think she is ready to leave her grandchildren behind. Coming from her, this is saying something worthy of note as she is not given to such talk. Someone "up there" needs to back off now, as this is quite enough. It is time for better days in all aspects because this girl is living in hell undeservedly.

My intuitive sense of this is that she is knocking it out of the park in her laborious recovery. And that you are a magnificent partner in her life. Many more miles before we sleep, Sir. Best wishes and thoughts!

Good to hear...think about medicinal manuka honey for the graft site if there's chance of infection.
