Osteoporosis Is Scurvy of the Bone, Not Calcium Deficiency

    Written By:

"A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones."~Proverbs 17:22

It saddens me to see older women diagnosed with "osteopenia" or "osteoporosis" listening to their doctors and taking supplemental calcium and even problematic drugs called bisphosphonates. These are irrational, dogmatic, harmful approaches to the problem of degrading bone as we age. In my time practicing nephrology and internal medicine, I saw numerous patients suffering from vascular disease while taking the recommended doses of calcium. X-rays revealed perfect outlines of calcified blood vessels and calcified heart valves.

Pictured here is a calcified breast artery, often seen in women who are being treated for hypertension. The primary drug used in high blood pressure, a thiazide diuretic, causes the body to retain calcium and lose magnesium and potassium. We incidentally note these types of calcifications in the large arteries of the entire body, not just the breasts. I believe these problems are avoidable.

The matrix of bone will incorporate calcium and nutrients where they belong as long as the proper hormones and nutrients are present. Needless to say gravitational force in the form of weight bearing exercise is essential and should be the foundation to a healthy skeleton. Don't be afraid to exercise with some weight in a backpack if you have no disk disease or low back pain.

You still have to look at what you can do nutritionally, and in interpersonal relationships to help your body heal itself. Supplements are no replacement for good nutrition. After all, scientists are constantly discovering new things about food and its interaction with the body that we don't know.

The first thing to do is either google or look in your reference books to find foods right in Vitamin C, Vitamin K2, magnesium and minor minerals such as boron and silica. Silica is also important for bones. Remember too, that depression has many causes. Sometimes the cause can be nutritional deficiencies and sometimes depression can result from entrapment in unhealthy family dynamics. Controversially, I would also say that depression can also have spiritual origins.

But if time feels of the essence, then supplementation is one route which could be taken. While the medical profession supplements with calcium and fosomax, in my opinion, a more constructive supplementation regimen could include Vitamin C, Vitamin K2, vitamin D3( in winter months, sun in summer) and boron, silica and magnesium. These are all far more important to preventing fracture and keeping bone healthy than calcium.

Calcium will ultimately land in the muscles of the heart, the heart valves and the blood vessels, leading to cardiovascular disease. However if you are getting enough vit C, D3 and K2, your body will direct the calcium you ingest from your food, to where it belongs, not in your heart and blood vessels.

So basically eat right and you won't have osteoporosis? That's funny. So if in the future a female in my family eats right and gets it anyways? I guess then we will know this bs an we can go get real treatment with clear conscience.

Yeah, GreenMedInfo is a snake oil site. Note the author cited no studies, just undocumentd anecdotal evidence. My anecdotal evidence says that none of the patients she described in the article have similar medical histories to the women in mine, none of the women in my family took any of the medicines she's so distraught about, but yet several of them developed osteoporosis.

    Abstract

Scurvy occurs in individuals who eat inadequate amounts of fresh fruit or vegetables, often because of dietary imbalances related to advanced age or homelessness. Asthenia, vascular purpura, bleeding, and gum abnormalities are the main symptoms. In 80% of cases, the manifestations of scurvy include musculoskeletal symptoms consisting of arthralgia, myalgia, hemarthrosis, and muscular hematomas. Vitamin C depletion is responsible for structural collagen alterations, defective osteoid matrix formation, and increased bone resorption. Imaging studies may show osteolysis, joint space loss, osteonecrosis, osteopenia, and/or periosteal proliferation. Trabecular and cortical osteoporosis is common. Children experience severe lower limb pain related to subperiosteal bleeding. Laboratory tests show nonspecific abnormalities including anemia and low levels of cholesterol and albumin. The finding of a serum ascorbic acid level lower than 2.5 mg/l confirms the diagnosis. Vitamin C supplementation ensures prompt resolution of the symptoms.
    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15797491

The diligent search for small molecules and biologics to treat osteoporosis resonates with the expanding definition of osteoporosis and the implication that many more individuals worldwide have fragile bones. In developing nations in particular, while disease prevalence is difficult to estimate short of bone density measurements, the growing incidence of fractures poses a heavy burden of healthcare costs. In China, for example, almost 69 million individuals are estimated to have osteoporosis [1]. The cost of non-generic medications becomes difficult to bear in such emerging economies, prompting the need for affordable “osteoprotection”.

Vitamin C has long been known to affect the skeleton as gross deficiency causes the brittle bones of scurvy [2]. However, over the past decade, more subtle effects of vitamin C undernutrition have been gleaned. For example, low vitamin C intake is associated with low bone mass and a high fracture risk [3], [4]. More importantly, persuasive epidemiological evidence suggests that higher vitamin C intake is associated with higher bone mass [5], as well as reduced fracture risk over a 17-year follow-up [6]. Likewise, the Women's Health Initiative found a statistical relationship between total vitamin C intake and bone mineral density at both the hip and spine in women receiving hormone therapy [7]. Thus, it appears that, while adequate vitamin C prevents scurvy, higher doses might protect against skeletal loss.

Further evidence for an effect of vitamin C on bone mass comes from mouse genetic studies. The deletion of two key enzymes aldose reductase and aldehyde reductase, which results in absent de novo synthesis of ascorbic acid in mice, causes scorbutic bones [8]. While humans have lost the ability to synthesize vitamin C in vivo, and thus require nutritional supplementation, data in mice firmly establish an indispensible role for vitamin C in skeletal homeostasis. Both mouse and human osteoblasts require ascorbic acid to differentiate into mature mineralizing cells [9], [10]. In addition, mice that genetically lack ascorbic acid have immature dysplastic osteoblasts [8]. Thus, a key target for vitamin C appears to be the osteoblast. However, vitamin C also alters the resorption of bone by osteoclasts [11].

Importantly, Chambers and colleagues found that intraperitoneally injected ascorbic acid (2 mmol/kg/day) prevented ovariectomy-induced hyper-resorption and bone loss [12]. This study provided proof-of-concept that vitamin C could potentially be used to prevent hypogonadal bone loss. Still, even with the passage of ∼20 years, no clinical trials have evaluated the effect of vitamin C on skeletal integrity in humans. Here, we extend Chambers' initial observation, and provide evidence that vitamin C, when ingested orally, can prevent bone loss following ovariectomy through an anabolic action. We show, in a model of low-turnover osteoporosis, that this in vivo action results from the stimulation of bone formation noted in histomorphometric, bone marker, and quantitative PCR (qPCR) studies. Together with prior epidemiologic evidence showing a relationship between dietary intake and bone mass, our data provide compelling evidence for a therapeutic potential for vitamin C.

Think of osteoporosis as scurvy of the bones…and stock up on vitamin C

Of course, these studies would not be so captivating if we hadn’t forgotten the vitamin C-bone connection unearthed many years ago by Dr. James Lind. Which raises the question: Why did 18th century British sailors get better care for their bones than 21st century American women are getting today?

Because mainstream medicine currently refuses to recognize that osteoporosis is scurvy of the bones—and not calcium deficiency. And that means that unfortunately for American women, the mainstream osteoporosis medical treatments remain “lost at sea.”

Don’t be left to drown by your doctor. Help strengthen your bones and prevent osteoporosis with the following checklist:

Eat a healthy, balanced diet that includes calcium-rich dairy, meat, and seafood, along with plenty of fruit, cruciferous vegetables, and leafy greens—which are all rich in vitamin C.
Take 250 mg of vitamin C twice daily with meals.
Take 10,000 IU of vitamin D daily, especially during this time of year, when it’s difficult for most people to get enough sun to make adequate amounts of D in their bodies.
Take 200-400 mg a day of magnesium, which is also important for strong bones. Look for formulations that contain bone-healthy boron as well.
    And finally, avoid calcium supplements.

    Getting back on topic:

Another great source of Vitamin C is Rose hips. Rose hips has been used since the Stone Age.

Bone Health: One of the most important roles of vitamin C, although it is one that is often overlooked, is its essential role in producing collagen. Collagen, along with the other important minerals found in rose hips, can help prevent osteoporosis by maintaining bone mineral density well into your old age, keeping you strong, flexible, and able to live an active life!
    https://www.organicfacts.net/health-...rose-hips.html

Hibiscus Tea is also another great source of Vitamin C.

The health benefits of hibiscus tea include relief from high blood pressure and high cholesterol, as well as digestive, immune system, and inflammatory problems. It helps to cure liver disease and reduces the risk of cancer. It can also speed up the metabolism and help in healthy, gradual weight loss. Hibiscus tea is rich in vitamin C, minerals and various antioxidants, while also helping in the treatment of hypertension and anxiety.

Hibiscus tea is prepared by boiling parts of the hibiscus plant, known by its scientific name Hibiscus sabdariffa, particularly the flower. Hibiscus tea is a very popular drink throughout the world and is often used as a medicinal tea. However, hibiscus flowers have various local names, and it might be called by its other rather common name, “Roselle”.

Hibiscus tea is ruby red in color and has a sour taste. Therefore, it is also known as sour tea and has a flavor similar to cranberry. It is widely available on the market throughout the tea-drinking world, and can be consumed hot or cold depending on your preference. This tea is low in calories and caffeine-free. This article discusses the various benefits of hibiscus tea which would help in keeping the human body healthy and fit.

I would also be interested in the recipe as I just made up my own with hibiscus tea and sugar. Had a terrible problem with foam so I had to add something to keep the foam down. If you know a better recipe, please let me have it.

    It's a simple recipe. I don't mind sharing.

One 6 oz cup of hisbicus tea - home brewed with a tea bag and hot water from my Primo water cooler/heater.
One 6 oz glass of Sutter Home Cabernet
Mix together - stir, not shaken (that might be where your foam is coming from)
Pour into wine glass and sip like a lady - pinky out.

Oh, I was making it from scratch, using yeast and fermenting the sugar out of the mixture.

Thanks, I might try that next spring.

Oh, and the foam was caused by all the CO2 bubbles from the yeast in the primary, the first batch foamed up and ran over the top. (Had to do a second attempt with an Antifoam (Defoaming) agent.) That worked out pretty well. Still have the wine aging in the cellar.

I made regular wine from my grapes this year too. It is in my cellar too aging.

I may try dandelion wine this year.

Excerpt from a newsletter I subscribe to:

A reader alerted me to research proving that electromagnetic radiation causes osteoporosis. A 2016 study in Turkey by Kunt et al. found that electrical workers had significantly lower bone mass density, as well as an increased tendency to severe osteoporosis, than a control population. The average age of both groups was 38.

Sieroń-Stołtny et al., in an astounding experiment in Poland, kept 10 young rats in a plastic cage for 28 days and put one Nokia 5110 mobile phone underneath the cage. The phone operated in silent mode and was only turned on for 15 seconds every half hour between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and again between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. In other words, the animals were exposed for a total of four minutes per day for 28 days. Ten control animals were in an identical cage but without a mobile phone beneath it.

At the end of the experiment, the rats were sacrificed and examined. The vertebrae of the exposed rats weighed on average 12.5% less than the vertebrae of the unexposed rats. The leg bones of the exposed rats had on average 12.44% less calcium and fractured more easily. Most of the calcium loss occurred during the first week of exposure. Blood analysis also indicated that collagen was lost from the bones.

In 2013, Ahmet Aslan et al., in Turkey, exposed 30 five-month-old rats, whose legs had been broken, to mobile phone radiation for 30 minutes per day, 5 days per week, for 8 weeks. At the end of 8 weeks, healing was significantly delayed in the exposed compared to the unexposed rats.

In 2011, Fernando Saraví, in Argentina, found that carrying a mobile phone on your hip causes osteopenia in that hip. Men who carried their phone on their right hip had lower bone mass density in their right hip than in their left hip. Men who carried their phone on their left hip had lower bone mass density in their left hip.
