RPR State Sen. Brakey for US Senate 2018 - Rumors

Barring a LePage entry into the mix, Eric will most likely mount a run to join Rand in the US Senate in 2018. He will be challenging a former governor, currently in his first term, 72 yr old independent Angus King.

Age is likely to be an issue, as Eric is young and Angus is old...

    Here are some articles:

"Brakey secured 62 percent of the vote last month, only the third time in more than four decades that a Republican has hauled in more than 60 percent in the district. One of those who pulled off the feat is Olympia Snowe, who did it in 1976 before she moved on to represent Maine in the U.S. Senate."

"That could be a problem for King, who raised less than any other U.S. senator elected in 2012, especially with Brakey’s potential for national fundraising from Ron Paul Republicans, who are known nationally to pour in donations to candidates they favor in online “money bomb” fundraisers."

Brakey does a good job here in Maine and we are lucky to have him. I would vote for him. But the chances of taking King's seat from him are slim to none. King has like 60-70% approval ratings. Now if King retires and both a democrat and an independent ran to split the vote it's possible. It would take that same perfect storm that put LePage in office for Brakey to win.

I agree with all of your points. As you know, there are term limits in Maine. That's how Brakey was able to be a committee chairman last term. Eventually, Brakey needs to look for a position other than state senate. If not US Senate, maybe he will eventually run for state house or US Congress.

Agreed it is an uphill battle if things remain the same. What are the effects of a potential loss?

He would give up his current seat, as he can't be on the ballot in two places. This would have +/-'s. He is building quite a name for himself as an actual public servant; both thoughtful and fairminded, all the while promoting the principles of liberty. Additional years in his current seat would grow that, as well as bolster perceptions of "experience" (to be used to counter "too young" attacks). On the plus side, this would give him much greater exposure for future races, and could spearhead the "education campaign" aspect of the r3VOLution for 2018. The question then is if he can maintain/expand his visibility in any downtime...

    What else?

And Jack wrote on this today...

"The Republican Party is changing, for good or ill, something time will tell. New young leaders with the right principles certainly couldn’t hurt the party, particularly at the national level. Brakey holds solid libertarian and conservative positions on more issues besides the Second Amendment and foreign policy, but this column can only be so long."

In Maine, you are term limited after 8 consecutive years in the state senate. His district usually elects a Democrat. It might go Democrat in 2018 (if he runs for the US Senate instead). So even if he loses his US Senate race, which is likely, he will be the leading Republican candidate for his old state senate seat in 2020, and will have expanded his fundraising network. Plus, he will be eligible to serve 8 years in the state senate seat.

For Brakey, the main downside is the inability to work while he attempts to raise millions for the race. For the people of Maine, the main downside is that the senate is controlled by the GOP 18-17. If he runs for US Senate, there is a decent chance the body will flip to Democrat control, but it might anyway. With LaPage term limited, the Democrats might control the entire Maine government like they did for many years. Then many of the reforms introduced since 2011 might be reversed. But I'm being overly dramatic about this

Hopefully he will be a lot smarter about it than Bydlak was (granted I was impressed with her fundraising all things considered).

If Brakey decides to run, everyone should put full effort into getting him elected. He is the real deal, and would be a huge liberty bonus in the US Senate.

Chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee Senator Eric Brakey released the following statement regarding the American Health Care Act (AHCA).

“The American Health Care Act, which is being pushed by the elite and powerful in Washington, is not the full repeal of Obamacare that Republican’s promised,” said Senator Brakey. “This bill is simply Obamacare-lite and is a bailout for the big insurance companies and a giant bill for the little guy. The plan as it stands today is not what is best for our country and is not what is best for Maine.

“Just as Obamacare was written by the insurance lobbyists to benefit their industry, now that it is collapsing around them, they've crafted a ‘Republican’ version of Obamacare to prop up the failing system they created at our expense. At the end of the day, the insurance companies are fighting to maintain a government-mandated "3rd Party Payer" system, which keeps insurance companies and government at the center of all healthcare decisions, dis-empowers patients from making their own choices, and removes all market incentives to lower healthcare prices. The big insurance companies don't mind rising healthcare prices because it means they can charge higher premiums. The higher the premiums, the bigger their cut.

“The only solution is empowering the little guys of America to be in control of their own healthcare again. That means supporting alternatives to 3rd Party Payer --- like Healthcare Savings Accounts and Direct Primary Care --- which empower the little guy and reward those providers that offer lower prices.

“To fix healthcare in America, let's try liberty for the little guy, not bailouts for big insurance companies.”
