Denmark deports woman for begging for the first time

A Slovakian woman is to be deported from Denmark for begging for the first time under a controversial law that criminalises the practice.

Judges at the City Court of Copenhagen sentenced the woman to 40 days in prison on Tuesday, after which she will be expelled from the country.

Police said the woman had previously been convicted several times for begging for money from passers-by in the Danish capital.

“This is the first time a person has been deported from Denmark for begging,” a statement said, adding that the court found the defendant had come to Denmark “with the sole purpose of supporting herself by begging”.

“Even though she is an EU citizen and therefore enjoys enhanced protection against expulsion, the court assessed that there were grounds for deportation,” a spokesperson added.

Article 197 of Denmark’s penal code criminalises begging for anyone who has previously ignored police cautions, with a maximum prison sentence of six months.

Begging must be “active” to be illegal, rather than someone passively accepting donations. EU citizens are frequently warned or fined, while those from outside the continent can be immediately deported.

Danish law also prevents local authorities giving shelter to unregistered immigrants without a national identification number.

Prosecutors said they were “satisfied” with the landmark judgement allowing the Slovakian woman to be deported.

The woman is probably a Gypsy, the biggest public nuisance problem in Europe.

They don't look like Melania Trump, I know she's from Slovenia, not Slovakia.

Gypsies look like Soledad Obrien on meth. They are from Ancient Kazakhstan or India.

They started showing up in California a couple of years ago. Usually a woman with a baby. They appear to be Indian/Pakistani, but many people say they are gypsies.

Imprisonment should be for acts of violence.
How are family, friends, and churches to solve problems if the lowest amongst us cannot plea for benevolence in the commons?
What has been stolen by a beggar? Who can claim tangible harm when his fellow man pleas for help?
I suppose we'd all rather see the poorest quietly tucked away in government housing; out of sight out of mind.

Whenever I would drive from West Germany to the coast of Spain I would eat at the French/Spanish border with some Gypsies . I used to buy bottles of wine from I guy I meet there , I think he is deceased now. I would amaze the children with stories of my bear , lion hunting etc

My brother has been living in Northern Denmark for a year and change now, running a small brewery (please try Ebeltoft beer if you're ever over there, and Enlightenment Ales if you're around Boston). He's a liberal, but we got him to vote for Ron back in the day. He has been telling me for years "they must be on to something over here, I've never seen a homeless person". Nor did when I was there for 10 days (I also never saw physical paper or coined money).

I guess now we know why!
    The more prohibitions you have,
the less virtuous people will be.
    The more weapons you have,
the less secure people will be.
    The more subsidies you have,
the less self-reliant people will be.

    Therefore the Master says:
I let go of the law,
    and people become honest.
    I let go of economics,
    and people become prosperous.
    I let go of religion,
    and people become serene.
I let go of all desire for the common good,
and the good becomes common as grass.

    -Tao Te Ching, Section 57

OK... um, I'm not getting the point, though... did you miss the sarcastic humor aspect of what I posted, or are you making some orthogonal point? Please excuse my dullardly intellect.

The jail time does seem excessive. Isn't Denmark one of the countries that doesn't even give life terms for murder?
