You'd be amazed at what you can grow in four months.

I want a hobby farm in rural Kansas... west of Kansas City a ways... like Tonganoxie area.... plenty of water, lots of good soil, not a lot of people...

    Pro tips for living

First thing to consider when living anywhere is community. You can live on an island by yourself and be 'free' until you need some help. Successful people surround themselves with trustworthy and resourceful friends/family. For most people your safest bet is to stay near family if those bonds are strong. That being said...

If you want to stay in America my top choices are...

Utah for raising a family. Utah is a lot like Texas without the humidity. Both states are very pro-gold.
    Texas isn't a bad one.
Alaska or Wyoming if you hate taxes and don't mind bad weather/small community.
New Hampshire if you are a 'take over stuff' kinda guy.

If you want to leave America...

Keep in mind that a foreign language and/or a pile of cash is what you will need to be successful. Also, find a community quickly. There are entire websites dedicated to this topic.

Chile if you want to make a business, raise a family, thrive, in a liberty setting.
Pitcairn Island or Cook Islands (if you are rich) if you are looking to survive. On Pitcairn you can get free land but you are super isolated.
Switzerland if you don't mind be surrounded by the tyrannical EU.
New Zealand if you are rich/skilled, don't speak a second language, don't want to, and don't care for the tiny island scene.

    Just my two cents.

More and more.. I am a stranger in a strange land.

    just passing through.
"The wolf and the lamb will graze together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox; and dust will be the serpent's food. They will do no evil or harm in all My holy mountain," says the LORD.
Liberty is lost through complacency and a subservient mindset. When we accept or even welcome automobile checkpoints, random searches, mandatory identification cards, and paramilitary police in our streets, we have lost a vital part of our American heritage. America was born of protest, revolution, and mistrust of government. Subservient societies neither maintain nor deserve freedom for long.

I've got my heels dug in in the south east.. maybe over to Louisiana.. I grew up with snow.. had my fill. I'm pushing 60 now and the other end of a snow shovel just is not in the plan.
The plan is grow zone 8, preferably 8B.
Florida and Georgia have about the same property tax
Alabama has incredibly low property tax - really.. the properties I've looked at are all under 400/year
Florida.. no state income tax and finally passed limited medical weed
Mississippi .. just the southern part.. climate and casinos (Bilouxi) until the dollar dies
Louisiana.. well.. I used to live there but the friends from that time in my life have all gone liberal.. so even though New Orleans is fun for a weekend.. I don't think I'd want to live there - and the whole below sea level thing is nuts
Anyone else want to chime in on pros and cons for those states?
My daughter swears that Alabama is the gang capital of the world.

You couldn't pay me to live ANYWHERE East of the Mississippi... I'm all about mid-west and northwest... maybe SW if they can get their fresh water problems solved long-term. (That's a whole other topic).

I'm kind of attached to the heat and humidity.. and WAY less laundry (smaller and less clothing). Some areas have really good soil - ya gotta get away from the beach/ tourist areas though.

    I just can't fathom that.

But, whatever blows your skirt up.

My advice would be remain in the northern panhandle of FL.

FL has the highest "freedom index" ranking of all the states you mentioned at number 8 "most free".

Nice to see NH back at Number 1 - Whoo Hoo!!!

Florida has a great freedom index...then you go there and realize the freedom index is worth what I paid to read it! Florida is another world and not in a good way.

I'm quite fond of Alabama; it may not be the best place on Earth, but it's my place and I love it.

My wife and I are looking to relocate from Louisiana to somewhere else in a few years. Not too sure where yet. Looking at Utah. 31 years of heat, humidity and mosquitos is enough.

I hear in other parts of the country there are these things called seasons. I would like to find out if they are real or just a myth.

I lived many places , but it was one thing I always missed about home . The seasons . Spring and especially Fall . I always felt I was being cheated if I went an October without seeing the leaves turn vibrant colors .

Florida really ought to be 2 or even 3 states. If you drew a line from Daytona to Tampa.. that line south is more like a chunk of Long Island that snapped off and floated south. North Central, Gainsville Ocala area to include Jacksonville, is pretty much red neck and blue state mix.. then there's the panhandle, sometimes referred to as southern Alabama.. also a great divide, the south part.. beaches, tourism and the north.. agriculture and a crap load of military base property. Property taxes vary a Lot in the northern counties. Tallahassee is kind of alone .. not really touristy - doesn't have that north central red neck vibe going.. not all transplants from the great white north and for a capitol city - is relatively small

It isn't great but you can grow some veggies twice a year outside, like kale. The growing season for kale ends between late October and sometime in November, depending on the weather. If you attempt to grow crops longer by starting inside, using a cheap green house, or even protecting plants from light frosts, you can add another month or more. So depending on what you do with little effort and the weather, the growing season is 6 to 9 months in NH. If you heat a green house or grow inside, you can grow all 12 months in NH.

Actually, NH is the center of the grow locally movement. NH and the states to the right and left of it lead the nation in the Locavore Index.
Using recent indicator data from multiple sources, the Index incorporates farmers markets, consumer-supported agriculture operations (CSAs) and food hubs in its per-capita comparison of consumers’ interest in eating locally-sourced foods — also known as locavorism.

The top five states for locavorism, according to the Index, in order, are Vermont (first), Maine, New Hampshire, North Dakota and Iowa, while the bottom five are Texas (last), Florida, Louisiana, Arizona and Nevada.

Currently Yuma,AZ. Why? It gets more Sunlight per year than any other location in the US. Like 9 out of 10 days are sunny or partly cloudy. Well, with that kind of solar potential, could easily live all electric off grid. Build some indoor hydroponic grow rooms for food if you want land is pretty cheap. With such abundant solar power, Running AC,Refrig, Dehumidifier for emergency water supply wouldn't be a big deal. 20Kilowatt solar array, producing at peak almost all day!!!

However, if the zombie apocalypse doesn't happen, my thoughts are mining cryptocurrencies. As I type this I'm in the middle of rigging up one of my systems, to where the pci-express power cables, will be fed off my Solar/battery bank, and that will switch back and forth between the regular computer supply in Realtime, if the voltage drops so as not to drain the battery bank in case of clouds. The Benefit of doing it like this is when running off the Solar/Battery it is directly reducing grid power consumption, and also it's more efficient than converting to AC then switching that off the grid power in real time. So, skip a couple conversions and likely 20% of total power being wasted. The PCI EXPRESS Auxillary power cords are isolated from the primary power supply running off the grid AC, as you can and I have before run a second power supply to power the pci express power lines.

Anyway, Off to continue my experiment!!!!!! MUhahahahaaaha. OF course as much as I'm sure this will work, I'm using an old GPU at first

    Edited to add.
Muahahhahhah... It worked!!! No Smoke or nuffin! Ran the Nicehash miner benchmark and it went all the way to complete. Sucked 7 amps at 12 Volts Converted from the 24 Volt from the solar for the pci-express while the rest of the computer ran from mains power. Now have to get my Voltage Relay, and big contactor in the middle to see how the realtime switching goes.

Same for me but in the opposite order. South America is great country for imitating birds. It is possible there for a person to imitate birds over extreme distances and altitudes, AKA awesome.

Norway is an awesome country with nice friendly people, good fishing, hunting, skiing, camping.. A lot of outdoor activities can be done there. Large, not densely populated. I like it.

Finland is an odd country, but oddness that I like. Really cool people although they are sometimes more lefty than you'd expect. Still a very nice country, where people know how to drive cars.

Switzerland, too expensive for me. Too many silly rules. But, if you're into the silly rules they have there, it's the best country ever. Since it's the least likely to change a whole lot over the next century.

    Quite the commute. Oil field?

There is a lot I like about new Hampshire. Not sure if I could survive a hard winter there. The furthest north I have ever been is the Arkansas.

What's the market on land like there?

Unless you are unable to walk, have no money, and no way to get money, you can easily survive the winter in NH. You are more likely to die because of weather issues in the South than in New Hampshire.

    Yup.

Winter is certainly for real, although usually without the insane snow amounts that you find in upstate NY.
