Senate Republicans revive legislation to ban online gambling

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...olitics&wpmm=1

The day after it became public that billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson gave $20 million to a super PAC with close ties to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), three GOP senators introduced legislation that would effectively ban online gambling — a measure Adelson has long pushed for.

The super PAC, the Senate Leadership Fund, backs Senate Republicans and is run by McConnell’s former chief of staff Steven Law. The group received $28 million in August — more than it raised during the entire 2016 election cycle. The vast majority, $20 million, came from Adelson and his wife Miriam. The contributions were made public on Sept. 20, per Federal Election Commission filings. The legislation was introduced Sept. 21.

The bill is a revamped version of a previous Adelson-backed measure that would ban Internet gambling. The latest version was introduced by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), and co-sponsored by Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Mike Lee (R-Utah). The measure would prohibit financial institutions from processing Internet gambling transactions.

Seeing the record of McCain it appears that McCain supports that notion as well not surprising that old NeoCon cold war era hags want to ban online gambling.

Agree. Mike Lee is usually on-the-nose, constitutionally.

And gambling is no one's business.

This has been brought up a few times. Apparently Mike Lee has some principled Wire Act reason for this.

Purely for political reaons, democrats should be hitting Kelly Ayotte & others on this co-opting Trump supporters as well.

This is irritating. And nobody cares.

I have heard his explanation. It is ridiculous.

The reason he has strong opposition is because he took $150,000 in illegal campaign contributions during his Senate primary campaign from the person who ran a bank in Utah and processed most of the online gambling transactions in the country. Jeremy Johnson is now serving a prison sentence and Lee has been investigated for it and is trying to avoid any perception of impropriety.

More likely that on line gambling gets banned and casinos get subsidized. $20 million can buy a lot in congress.
