U of Iowa to create social justice bachelor's degree

    http://www.campusreform.org/?ID=8106

The University of Iowa could become the first school in the state to add a bachelor’s program in social justice to its list of degrees, provided its Board of Regents approves the motion.

Currently, the school already offers a first-year seminar on social justice as well as a “Justice for All” living learning community where students can live and “learn about systemic problems in our society.”

Students have “expressed a desire to integrate academic work more deeply with anticipated career paths.” Tweet This

University officials told The Iowa City Press-Citizen that both programs have been so well-received, with full-enrollment in the “Justice for All” learning community, that demand for an actual degree-program on the topic makes sense.

“The proposed program will appeal to students who want a vocation related to helping others, or careers in government services or the nonprofit sector, but are not necessarily interested in teaching or social work,” a proposal for the program suggests, noting that there is no “specific degree program” at the university or in the state that provides “opportunities in these areas.”

According to the proposal, the program will be interdisciplinary in nature, since more and more students have “expressed a desire to integrate academic work more deeply with anticipated career paths,” such as social activism work with a non-profit.

OK. This is how you play it. I'm sure some RPF member might need a job. Walk in for the interview and say...

You all are anti-Identity fachists. I demand this job and I demand my tuition cost be covered through a grant. Otherwise, I will cover social media excoriating your anti-Identity fascism views. I might even petition the ACLU to sue.

I assume that this credential doubles as proof of indigence at the welfare office.

Haha! I was just thinking the same thing myself. What could this degree even be used for, other than lining a birdcage?

Fantastic! They can graduate with a B.A. in Social Justice and go to work down at the Starbucks and whine about their student loans and how Bernie's Democratic Socialism (totally different from, like, socialism) could provide them a living wage!
    ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!

I find it funny that they "express a desire to integrate academic work more deeply with anticipated career paths." It just smacks of parody, mimicking all the arguments people have been making about these useless degrees. They want to integrate their academic work with things like "government" and "nonprofit work", which pretty much means no career. So they want to integrate their academic work with not having a career, not to mention that the list of proposed non-careers, in and of itself, proves the point about social justice courses and degrees even without these people outright saying that this is what they're preparing for, but the fact that they did say it just takes the cake. Unbelievable.

Wow, I would still choose a BA in Social Justice over one in early childhood education. Just saying

Btw, if I was the president of a University, I would offer any degree that I think is profitable to my consumers. They are adults and can choose what is good for them and once the tuition is paid and the curriculum is taught, I could care less what they do with their earned degree after they graduate.

First of all, I don't like working with children, pediatrics was my worst clinical in nursing school. Also they have long working hours and make less than Burger king managers who unlike early childhood education degree holders are not burdened with huge student loans.

Social justice degree on the other hand is an up and coming field, I can see myself working in some big liberal think tank, the UN or some other serious liberal agency that is well funded by some Soros type billionaire. I think these are exciting times to be in the business of social justice

Really? You can see yourself working for a bunch of liberals? Is that because you think you would be able to GET the job, or because you would be able to stomach it?

Another problem I have with it is that it is a 4 yr Bachelors degree and not a 2 yr associate degree. Sorry but I dont think one needs 4 yrs to learn how to teach those kids.
