Russia as well as other Orthodox countries are marking the Baptism of Rus Day this Thursday.
The exact date when Kievan Rus adopted Christianity in 988 is unknown and the holiday has been officially marked in Russia on July 28 as a memory day of Grand Prince Vladimir, the Russian medieval ruler who brought the light of Orthodox Christianity to Kievan Rus and baptized its people. This day is celebrated officially since 2010.
Kyiv was the first city in ancient Rus to adopt Christianity. The light of Christianity spread across all Rus to become its core religion.

At 10 a.m. GMT here began the solemn service, which was attended by representatives of all 15 Orthodox churches of the world. Led the Liturgy, the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill, assisted by the bishops of Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, Jerusalem, Georgian, Serbian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Cypriot, Greek and Albanian churches and Church of the Czech lands and Slovakia Orthodox Church in America and the Japanese Autonomous Orthodox Church.

    OK.

Glad the message of Christ is spread.

have a hard time with decrees.
Liberty is lost through complacency and a subservient mindset. When we accept or even welcome automobile checkpoints, random searches, mandatory identification cards, and paramilitary police in our streets, we have lost a vital part of our American heritage. America was born of protest, revolution, and mistrust of government. Subservient societies neither maintain nor deserve freedom for long.

*thumbsup* The conversion of the Slavs was extremely peaceful. It was at that time my patron saint Cyril, minister to the Slavs, and his companion Methodius invented the Cyrillic alphabet and made Church Slavonic possible. This also allowed the Slavs to become literate generally and in Bible scriptures particularly. This ministry, after a few generations, made possible the Golden Age of Russian Literature(Pushkin, etc) and general enlightenment of all Slavic people. There were no decrees, AFAIK.

There is precedent for the method of conversion mentioned above in scripture. Heads of households would see their entire households baptized on the conversion of the head (Acts 16:31-33; 1 Corinthians 1:16), and of course in the Gospel account itself (Matthew 28:19) Christ commands to "teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of The Father, The Son and the Holy Ghost", which is what was done when the Slavs were converted.

The privilege of heads of state to have their subjects baptized when they have converted likewise has basis by the example of the Old Testament in the case of Nineveh in the Book of Jonah, as well as Pharaoh with Egypt during the time of Joseph. These were not cases of New Testament Baptism so much as these were nations that were saved by the acts of their heads of state.
