JONES INTRODUCES RESOLUTION TO DECLASSIFY THE 28 PAGES

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) introduced a resolution to direct the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence in the House of Representatives to declassify the 28 redacted pages of the Joint Inquiry Into Intelligence Activities Before and After the Terrorist Attacks of September 2001. The pages were initially classified by President George W. Bush and have remained classified under President Barack Obama. In the House, the Committee on Intelligence has jurisdiction over the pages.

“I have read these pages and can say that while their release will not harm national security, the contents are critical to our foreign policy moving forward. That is why I have introduced a resolution that would enable the House Committee on Intelligence to declassify the 28 pages. The CIA has stated that Congress owns the 28 pages, and the Supreme Court has ruled that members of Congress can declassify material. It is more critical than ever for the American people to know what led to the tragic attacks on September 11, 2001, and I urge my colleagues on the House Intelligence Committee to release the pages.”

In addition to the resolution asking the House Intelligence Committee to declassify the 28 pages, Congressman Jones has also been working to pass a resolution calling on President Obama to declassify the 28 pages. For over two years, Congressman Jones has been working to ensure President Obama keeps his promise to the 9/11 families that his administration would declassify the pages. To that end, Congressman Jones met with General Clapper, Director of National Intelligence last month regarding the status of the Obama administration’s declassification effort. General Clapper made his recommendation to the White House on whether he thinks the 28 pages should be declassified at the end of that week. New House Resolution Directs Intel Committee to Release 28 Pages From 9/11 Report

Encouraged by rising, bipartisan support for a resolution urging President Obama to declassify 28 pages said to link Saudi Arabia to the 9/11 hijackers, the leaders of Capitol Hill’s declassification drive have now introduced a resolution directing the leaders of the House intelligence committee to take matters into their own hands.

Introduced Monday, House Resolution 779 directs the chair and ranking member of the House intelligence committee—Devin Nunes and Adam Schiff, respectively—to declassify the 28 pages by publishing them in the Congressional Record under the protection of the Constitution’s Speech or Debate Clause.

Congressman Walter Jones introduced the resolution along with original cosponsors Stephen Lynch and Thomas Massie. The same trio is the driving force behind House Resolution 14, which urges the president to release the pages that comprise the final chapter in the report of a 2002 congressional intelligence inquiry. Introduced last year, HRes 14 has seen a surge in support following an April 60 Minutes report on the 28 pages, and now has 70 cosponsors.

Advocates for Release of 9/11 Documents Worry About Potential Delay

With the Obama administration nearing declassification of the still-secret 28 pages of a congressional report on the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, new worries have surfaced that the White House might hand Congress the responsibility for releasing the document, which is said to suggest high-level Saudi complicity in the episode.

That possibility has alarmed advocates for disclosing the pages, since there was no clear-cut avenue for Congress to do so. They had always assumed that the White House would act once it had completed its declassification review, and they now fear that involving Congress again is a stalling attack.

Hoping to clarify the situation, sponsors of the initial legislation calling for the release of the 28 pages introduced a separate House resolution on Wednesday urging the House Intelligence Committee to declassify the pages and publish them in the Congressional Record. The resolution, introduced by Representative Walter B. Jones, Republican of North Carolina, and others, says that “justice and truth must prevail over the embarrassment or protection of enemies of the American people that aided, abetted or materially assisted the gruesome international terrorist murders of 9/11.”
