Californians likely headed for Democrat vs. Democrat Senate race

Washington (CNN) - It's not looking like a Republican will be on the California Senate ballot in November.

If early vote returns hold, for the first time, California Republicans voting in the general election this November won't have a Senate candidate from their party on the ballot.

That's because the state operates using an open primary -- some people call it a "jungle primary" -- in which only the top two primary vote-getters make it onto the general election ballot, regardless of party. And on Tuesday, not one Republican made the cut. With 15% of the expected vote counted, two Democratic candidates, state Attorney General Kamala Harris and Rep. Loretta Sanchez, had by far the most votes of the 34 (yes, 34) candidates on the ballot. The nearest Republican, Duf Sundheim, was in third with 10% of the vote, reflecting the strength of California's leftward shift over the past generation

There was a huge list of candidates- I think it was 16 people on the ballot. Top two vote getters move on to the final election. Seat is to replace another Democrat- Barbara Boxer. I see it was 34 candidates running for the seat. http://ktla.com/2016/05/10/candidate...-in-san-diego/

The nearest Republican, Duf Sundheim, was in third with 10% of the vote

Sundeheim is a very moderate Republican but is the state Party Chairman.

Sundheim’s political universe consists of business leaders and conservative thinkers such as former U.S. Secretary of State George P. Shultz, and his message has the distinct echo of Reagan-era views on national security and a more progressive stance on gay rights, immigration and climate change.

Well, if it's a race to "replace another Democrat", then surely the replacement must be a Democrat, eh?

Duf Sundheim was a former Party Chair. He was the only Republican who was running radio ads. Tom Del Baccaro was also a former GOP Party Chair, and he had the support of "Tea Party", teocon types and Stephen Moore, who worked with Rand on his tax plan. Ron Unz was endorsed by Ron Paul.

In a no-name GOP contest, the advertising probably won.
