Put it a little more in context and quote things accurately:

Johnson then brought up the website ISideWith.com, on which the Libertarian Party has purchased ads to promote its petition to add Johnson to the presidential debate stage.

This website is a political quiz consisting of 60 questions that collectively determine which presidential candidate the person most aligns with. Johnson said that after siding 100 percent with himself, the next closest candidate he sides with is Sanders at 73 percent.

“But interestingly, of all the presidential candidates, I next side with Bernie Sanders at 73 percent,” he said.

“Now, that’s the side of Bernie that has to do with pro-choice, pro-marriage equality, let’s stop with the military interventions, that there is crony capitalism, that government really isn’t fair when it comes to this level playing field, legalize marijuana,” he said. “Look, 73 percent of what Bernie says I agree with. We come to a T in the road when it comes to economics. I would really argue that if we absolutely had a fair system of economics, that free markets, that we would do a lot better than going down the– going down the path of socialism.”

The most important element of a free society, where individual rights are held in the highest esteem, is the rejection of the initiation of violence.

Ron Paul has expressed the same sentiment. He made the point that in a free society, people could get together and have a voluntary socialist government. But in a socialist society you have no freedom to put together a voluntary society.

Not to nitpick too much, but what paul expresses there is that in a free society, voluntary socialism would be tolerated. That is a bit different than saying you "agree with" socialism. just saying...

    Important distinction.

Permits for voluntary socialism. As far as the statesman's exact thought on it, he said that libertarianism permits for a voluntary socialist society. But he was talking about anarchy specifically. Of course, the socialists historically come in and take your wealth at gunpoint in order to run their socialist system. Which is why anarchy can't and won't work. Try telling an anarchist that, though. It's like talking to the wall. They're trading one tyranny for another.

Here. Watch the whole thing. It's only 3 minutes. But pay specific attention to what he says at the end.

Title is very misleading, though. Which, I suppose, everyone here knows anyway.

Johnson is not exactly in line with Ron Paul. It might be a good idea for him not to try to spin Dr. Paul's words to suit his own ends.

Yep. That's right. And like Ron said, while libertarianism permits for voluntary socialism, socialists themselves will NEVER endorse the idea of you having your personal liberty where you can take care of yourself and not ask for anything from anyone else. But we won't hear Johnson mention that part of it. Nope. We sure won't.

Johnson is creating a clever false dichotomy here. One that few will see for what it is.

I had mentioned elsewhere around here some place that libertarianism (meaning the movement) is in grave danger of becoming hijacked by Cultutral Marxists in the mainstream establishment. We're seeing them streamline the idea that socialism is the new libertarianism. Cultural Marxists ARE the establishment. It's happening right in front of us if we're paying attention.

It's one of the reasons that it's so important to maintain a libertarian presence in left leaning circles. Without a presence, the cultural marxists narrate the terms of controversy where libertarian principles are discussed among naive people. And naive people become useful idiots for the cultural marxists in arbitrarily redefining libertarian principles in a mainstream/populist way.

voluntary socialism is just another way of saying private charity

    there's nothing wrong with either

'We endorse the idea of voluntarism; self-responsibility: Family, friends, and churches to solve problems, rather than saying that some monolithic government is going to make you take care of yourself and be a better person. It's a preposterous notion: It never worked, it never will. The government can't make you a better person; it can't make you follow good habits.' - Ron Paul 1988

And this is why true liberty-minded people should stop throwing around labels like "authoritarian," "socialist," and "collectivist." To a true libertarian, it's all a facet of freedom. We do some things together sometimes because the means of an individual might not be enough to meet a need.

Well. Provided we recognize the NAP, I suppose. Which isn't often the case among authoritarians, socialists and collectivists. NAP isn't something that they tend to incorporate into their principles. Polar opposite more often than not, really.

I've even see it mentioned and considered here as a matter of philosophy within the structure of our new site vision that we completely ignore acknowledgment of the NAP. This is a mistake. A matter of concern, even. There are libertarians who are equally as authoritarian. So when the NAP is strategically/deceptively omitted from philosophy this is something that we need to recognize and question. And question thoroughly and correctly.
